rolo is a smurf of a dog.. he comes from a line of small dogs.. but hes just lovely and can keep up with bigger dogs without any problems. he will run the legs off many others twice and 3 times his size and is perfect for shoving his way into the densest thickets to flush out pheasants. hes fearless too.. :luv:
Id have liked to see him a bit taller, but they are like us humans they come in all sizes.. :luv:

Maddi  (show) is just over 7 kilos at just under 6 months, I think most of that is hair!!

Maddie must be tiny! Milo is over 7kg's and he's only 4 months!

I met a few cockers off here and I was amazed how big Nicola's Tilly was, she looked like a giant next to Jean's Rollo.

Tilly says thanks a lot, she's off to try to find some Alice in Wonderland shrinking potion so that people will stop mistaking her for a big butch Field Spaniel instead of the dainty girly Working Cocker she is  :'( ;) :005:

Tilly you have no need to shrink sweetheart, every inch of you is a darling and you are perfect how you are  :luv:

  • To understand a cocker, you need to be a cocker!

I think she is just very deceiving, she looks really chubby because of all her hair, but when she's wet I just want to go home and feed her cos she looks so tiny!

So,  after reading these has the cocker got smaller over the years or larger? Wonder what the standard was 50 years or more ago. I thought smaller but I'm a novice at this plus never met a worker to see the difference.

the working cocker down south has definately gotten bigger, 25 years ago you never used to see cockers as big as springers. some springers also seem to have become bigger than the working strain of springers or maybe again here in the far north smaller working dogs prevail.. maybe its to do with the kind of cover they have to work in, its often really dense . and up here you dont see many show type springers thats for sure. again the same applies with labs you get smaller working labs up here ( I live in the far north highlands )
I know that my ex BIL had smaller working red setters and the pointers that are working locally also arent as big as some pet ones
 ? from show stock.

i dunno this far down south jean, there are some popular kennels that are breeding 'em big but still a couple of lines down this way that breed 'em a la jarv and rolo -  i know a particular gundog breeder in Hampshire that is specialising in small traditional working cockers using certain lines (and his stud dogs are heavenly  :luv:).  And Jarv's breeder likes them 'small and square' too :005:

Im really glad helen as I dont want what makes a cocker a cocker to disappear for the sake of wins  or popular sire thingamybob.
I know for a fact folk look at rolo and think " jeepers hes a titch he will never work.."  well he can..however he does have a big head and a large gob which helps   ;)  no snipy nose there, he has a square muzzle and can hold a bird without grabbing. I would have personally liked him to be 2 inches taller but I love him regardless. and as for flushing ..hes fantastic.
mind you one of his breeders last litter has turned out taller than her average dogs, so you get extremes now and again which are quite natural within the breed. just like humans  2 average sized parents can give birth to a small child or a tall child..
one thing Ive noticed is healthy male pups ( and male children) usually end up as big or bigger than their mothers. not smaller. anyone else noticed this?

It depends on the lines they come from. I'm not keen on the really midgety working cockers or on the really big Springery ones, I like something in between. Tilly is verging on Springer size and if she hadn't been a rescue I don't think I would have bought from lines which breed so big although at 18.5kg there are even bigger workers out there than her. I like the current Sandford, Chyknell and Larford dogs, they're a nice size, particularly FTCh Sandford Black Mamba who belongs to Simon Tyers at Hawcroft, he's a lovely dog.
