Title: How many times on average does your cocker bark indoors a day?
Post by: Archiesmum on August 24, 2014, 03:51:12 PM
Due to ongoing neighbour issues with my 14 month old cocker barking I'm just wondering how  many times a day is normal for a dog to bark at home?

He barks about twenty times a day

I had two springers who never barked unless someone came to house

I can't watch the TV or he would bark prob bout five times as much. I pull the curtains al dat or he would bark at passing dogs. Not all dogs. But a few he dislikes

His health is a1. All been vet checked. Behaviourists been and gone. Tried everything bar shock collars dunno why he barks or is it normal?

Am I fussing too much?

If neighbour slams his door shut he will bark. Is this cos he is too tense or cos just normal?

I'm worried he is on edge ? People say he seems very relaxed but why dies he bark at people coughing on TV keys rattling? People in high heels etc etc but all these things in real life he doesn't care less?

Minstrel  usually barks if

a) someone comes to door - (I'm happy he does - he is behind a barrier whilst I open door, they can see I have a dog)

b) the old chap next door is in his garden and Minstrel wants a fuss - but he does not bark for long, just a bit of excitement

c) if he hears a noise outside once we have gone to bed - I don't mind long as he is quiet when told (my feeling on that is he has probably done enough to put someone off trying to enter the property.

None of the above happens for long.

Murphy only barks if somebody knocks on the door.

I wouldn't say 20 times a day is all that excessive, unless the barking lasts minutes at a time. My cavalier would bark every time another animal appeared on the tv and wouldn't stop until it was off screen or we changed channels. It made watching some programmes impossible.

In the house not much at all, not even when someone comes to the door.
If he is looking out the window and the kids are noisy then he barks at them, or if they have scooters etc, which he HATES.

Outside is another matter right now, he barks to announce he is coming out to anyone out there, He barks incase they haven't heard his announcement, then he barks to make sure everyone hears from miles around.
Yes he is vocal.

I remember when we got our springer as a child, we thought he might not be able to bark, he didn't  bark for ages, then really only if someone came in the house, then within 1 min he was sat in between their legs being best buddy to them. So different from "in yer face" riley.

Dozens  :005:
Ben is very barky and vocal, Harry less so but joins in with Ben in case he is missing anything.
Loads of things set him off, people walking past, car doors, owls on TV, certain songs on the radio, and sometimes for no reason obvious to us if he is not barking he is whining, whinging or grumbling to himself. Fortunately our neighbours are quite a distance so he is not annoying anyone, but it does mean we can never risk a holiday in an apartment or adjoining house as he would drive everyone mad  :D

hardly ever, unless it is our fault & we are winding her up (very rare) as from first having her it has been a no-no.

Ours bark when the doorbell goes/postman, when there are animals on the tv, and when they are playing. We live in a detached house so mainly just let them get on with it!

Blue tends to bark when someone comes in but not when doorbell goes or any other time.

I have had one that barked at everything !!!  Even just running out into the garden.
They're all different, we tried everything with ours and it never did seem to stop them.
We've got a detached house so it doesn't really bother our neighbours.

Hudson barks if someone knocks on the door, if he's play fighting with DH or occasionally at the cats. Rarely more than one or two yaps though.

Brodie likes a good bark. Indoors she is at her worst if someone passes the window with a dog - she really goes daft. We are working on that, though ;).

 She'll bark if:

-she hears another dog bark
-we are playing
-when she wants something/attention seeking
-when it's time to go a walk with our neighbour
-and she's recently started barking when someone comes to the door.

My next door neighbour says she can barely hear her (she is hard of hearing though) and I'd say Brodie is actually quieter than other dogs in the street!

Cleo barks sometimes when there is someone at the door, other than that only when she is playing or there is a fly!

Milly very rarely barks as such, it's more of a low "Gruff" if she spots something she's not too happy about like people in fluorescent jackets passing the house or anyone coming up the path to the front door.
Chaz barks about half a dozen times a day. In the mornings we get a bark or two if we take too long to come downstairs after he's heard us moving about. Our regular Postwoman gets an excited bark and greeting from both Milly and Chaz as she always gives them a petting through the gate if they're in the garden....She's a cocker owner  :D and we sometimes meet her and her cocker when walking our two.

Anyone else coming to the door is met with a series of "Gruffs" from Milly and a bark or two from Chaz before they get to the door and, of course, any cats foolish enough to cross their territory are left in no doubt of their joint displeasure  ;).

Bob.

Milo rarely barks in fact for the first 6 months with us my OH heard him bark twice!
The only times he barks is when hes chasing Bella... next doors whippet x collie, who he cant catch!
Or when other dogs back at someone entering or near the house at night.
Even then he looks slightly confused by his first bark! :005:

This morning the weather was so "lousy" that after I had let Kez out for a wee I went back too bed  ;)
When our grandson bought my car back this morning (he'd borrowed it yesterday) he came into the kitchen & left the car keys on the table, Kez never made a sound & didn't even go to greet him, she just stayed asleep  :005:     Just goes to show what a GOOD guard dog she is.   Ben thought I had taken her a walk.  :dunno: :rofl1:

I have been getting quite concerned because our Flossie never really barks unless we are out and she sees something that she has never seen before, then she barks out of curiosity.  We feel quite lucky really as we have three noisy dogs either side of us, and even when they bark she keeps quiet.

Buster loves to get things off his chest!

He will bark:
Because another dog barks - up to a mile away - I think it is a kind of canine chat room
Because there are animals on the TV
Because (on a walk) he can see another dog ahead and wants them to stop and play - or because they didn't.

I put it down to adolescent exuberance. The world is very new and there are lots of things to get excited about.

Millie barks when someone comes to the door, or when it sounds like someone is coming to the door!

I live in a Mess (like Uni Halls) so only have a room rather than a house.  Luckily Millie is relatively quiet or the guy who lives in the next room may have something to say about it!

I am worried that Cassie (2yrs 3 mths, blue roan) is too noisy in the garden. Everytime she is out she barks at something. Neibour putting something in the bin, the kids over the fence behind us, kids or dogs a few houses or streets away. It seems she is always barking! She will stop when I shout or ask her to come in, but is it fair to have to bring her in for trying to protect her property? She rarely barks indoors and usually only when someone knocks the door. But should I try to control her barking outside more?

I'm having barking problems with my Archie (13 months) at the moment.  He will bark (sometimes for 2-3 mins at a time) when:

- my daughters go upstairs (he'll race after them, barking and getting very excited, even though they are being calm)
- any noise he hears outside
- when I am "ignoring" him whilst preparing dinner (previously used to lie over my feet)
- if I change position in my chair and happen to make a tiny noise
- if he wants to get to something/someone who is not in the same room (ie. when girls are having tea in dining room)
- every time my mobile or landline rings (this is particularly bad as I can't hear the person on the other side  >:()

The list basically is endless and barking occurs most of the day.  I'm wondering how to tackle it (thinking clicker training) but need to know I'm doing it correct from the start....  Lesley

Striker has barked only twice in the whole 2 years we have had him. The first time was when my partner came home from work on a chilly night and had his hood up and the poor pooch didn't know who it was and the second time was at my partners grandad because he just didn't like him lol
