Difference between a cocker and a springer
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:56:28 PM »

Springer vv Cocker in a nutshell......
"hey Springer, charge into that bramble bush & see if there is any game in there"
(Springer) - "Yes sir, with pleasure," (bash, smash, crash). "No, nothing in there."
"Hey Cocker, charge in to that bramble bush & see if there is any game in there"
(Cocker) "Erm, no need. I can smell from here there's nothing in there. I'lle give it a miss if you don't mind".
"Get in that bush Cocker, I command you!"
(Cocker) "Erm, you're obviously not hearing me. I have a far superior nose to you - I am standing 6 feet away from the bush & I'm telling you there's nothing in there, no point me getting all scratched up because you're a plumb who can't read me."
"GET IN THERE NOW!!!!!"
(Cocker) "Right, that's it. Idiot. I tried to play nice. I am NOT ONE of your commando Springers, I am a very refined dog with a highly tuned personality. If there was any game in that bush I would know about it and I'd have flushed it with pleasure. You screamed at me. I am NOT a SPRINGER. And for that, up yours. I'm going home. Forget taking me out training for a month because we're not buddies no more."

The Springer does it because you tell him to.
The Cocker does it if he thinks it's a smart thing to do.
:) :)

I know zilch about working spaniels , but that just rings so true with my show girl ... They have their own mind and will be biddable if you get where they're at, otherwise they will run rings around you :luv:

People laugh at me because I'm different, but I laugh at them because they are all the same.

Aww we had a springer growing up he was the most lovable dog ever,
I notice similar things with cocker Riley, greed being the most obvious !
With the springer he was loving but he was nervous, and very sensitive, Cocker Riley seems more confident, more social, not nervous at all.

I do love springers though.

The guy I go for training with has them sussed he is a Panel Judge afterall .............. a springer will hunt a concrete yard for the hell of it; a cocker will hunt it because you've asked it to; a clumber (i.e. FLORIN!) will look at the concrete.... look at you over the top of her glasses :shades: and just turn her back on you.
Trust me I know what I'm talking about aaaagggghhhhh! ph34r

Springer and cocker here love them both. Springer constantly running in hope of finding something cocker very choosy only when there is a point to it.

Its really fascinated me how different they are I just love a bit of doggy watching!

Riley had a lovely play yesterday morning with a 10 month old female springer, he is 5 months
It was lovely to see them play, it was so equal, like they were really well match, no dog was dominant they played so well, unlike other ones that he has played with.
