Eye Testing at Shows?
« on: January 07, 2011, 01:26:09 PM »
Not sure whether this should be shows or health so put it here as its the procedure and outcome of tests specifically at shows that I'm interested in.

I'm entered at Manchester in a couple of weeks and see that they do the eye testing there (Gonioscopy not available).  I'm interested in getting Charlies tested and assume that the vet who will be there is a specialist and therefore more likely to detect any anomaly better than a "everyday" vet.

Can you just explain in layman's terms, what are they picking up at these "show day" tests, would they see if any early signs of PRA for example (and not suggesting I suspect Charlie as having a problem, I'm just wondering whether I can justify £30)

Eye testing for Cockers under the KC/BVA scheme looks for the conditions known to be hereditary in Cockers ie GPRA and CPRA (and Glaucoma but only where the Gonioscopy is also done). Others conditions like distichiasis, PPM, congenital cataract might be noted on the test certificate (if seen) but won't result in an Affected result. Yes the vet doing the testing will be a specialist opthalmologist. Eye testing at shows is no different to KC/BVA eye testing done anywhere else but it means the price is cheaper  (because it's discounted when more than 25 dogs are tested at one time). If you do book Charlie in, don't forget his KC reg certificate and his microchip certificate (you'll need both). More info here (if you need it): http://www.bva.co.uk/canine_health_schemes/Eye_Scheme.aspx

Thank you for the link Jane.  Looks like £30 is a good price for specialist check then
