She tells me that she has nothing else running.....to her knowledge  Is it possible for something to be running in the background that she might not be aware of?
Yes it is. Not sure how it works with a Mac but with windows it's Ctrl, Alt, Delete whihc then brings up Task Manager and you can see what processes are running.

Doh! I use that all the time on my pc - never thought about it! Think that might be a bit technical for my Mum though! Will have to see if I can get my brother to pop round and have a look for her!
Just supposing its not that, is there anything else I could look at?
Mmmm not sure really. I was running 128mb memory for 2 years without any problems. My PC has LOADS of large programs and still ran OK so I'm not sure why she is getting this error message tbh. Have you tried doing a google search for this particular problem. I have had issues in the past and founf out how to solve them by a quick google search.

I did, but its hard to know how to help her when she's up in Cheshire and I'm down here in the Channel Islands. The only time I ever use an Apple is when I visit them so its not easy to talk her through things over the phone
Thanks for all your help :D
