How to back up

I must start to back up my computer as I have lost nearly all the pictures I have taken in the last year  what is the easiest way to do a back up on a laptop please and how often is best thanks

Not an expert, but maybe onto an external hard drive, or copy regularly onto disc.

We thought we had lost all our photos and videos when our computer died not so long ago, but a computer whizz we know was able to retreive them from the hard drive. I was so relieved. Pics of my son when born, first videos when learning to speak etc, irreplaceable.
Im a regular backer upper since then!
