Just to let all those who have been following our story on here know that my Archie was PTS this morning. He went peacefully in my arms whilst I completely lost it :'(
I had been working so hard with him over the past two months and was achieving some progress. However, completely out of the blue, last night he launched himself at my daughter and bit her again, he was like a rabid animal :'( For the rest of the evening, he was back to his happy-go-lucky self as if nothing had happened and I just knew that the problem in his brain couldn't be fixed.
We enjoyed a lovely walk this morning and lots of cuddles.
Devastated is simply not a big enough word for what we're feeling, especially after losing Odie so young two years ago.
RIP Archie, find angel Odie over the rainbow. Lesley

-
I am so very sorry from the bottom of my heart..
No-one could have tried harder than you did to prevent this, but you did the kindest thing you could have done for Archie and your family.
Archie is fine now, he is surrounded by all the other cockers at the Bridge who are looking after him, and Odie will be right there next to him.
My heart goes out to you and I am crying for you. To lose two cockers at such young ages is so cruel and such bad luck.
Thinking of you, and again, I am so sorry for you.
-
I'm am so sorry for you and your family I know how much you loved Archie. Please please don't be hard on yourself you did everything a cocker mum could do. You went above and beyond for your boy. Rest in peace beautiful boy you were loved.
-
Lesley..I am so sorry.
-
Run free, Archie. Thinking of you all x
-
Tears flow for Archie...run free young boy
-
Just such a tragic situation. You really couldn't do anything more than you did; my heart goes out to you for having to make the final decision; to your daughter for what must have been a heartbreaking situation to love her dog so much but to be the one who Archie always turned against and of course, to Archie himself :'(. I'm so totally sure that there was no other choice for him. He could not have been re homed as he had attacked on several occasions and so you gave him these past few months of happiness, trying so hard to find another option for him in the hope that he could be cured. Totally devastated for you all. Run free now Archie :luv: :luv:
-
So sorry. This is such a familiar story to me. You did all you could. I hope your daughter is ok and the bite was not severe. As she was the usual victim I also hope she has no guilt over the out come. Hugs to you all xx
-
Just don't know what to say, so very sad :012:
Bob.

I am sitting here in Australia weeping over your loss. The only good thing I can think of is that you have so much support from this forum. You did absolutely everything humanly possible for Archie.
-
Deeply sorry to read your news.

So sorry for your loss but you did the right thing, he's at peace now x
-
Run free at the bridge Archie, at peace & forever happy & young.
Lesley - I don't think any of us can begin to appreciate what you, Archie & all your family have been through, but you have done this with fortitude & bravery.
The tears are flowing for you all.
I pray that this experience has not put any of you off having another dog.
Thinking of you all xx
-
Thanking you all from the bottom of my heart :luv: I cannot describe just how your kind words and support have helped me over these past few months and I feel bad that you're feeling bad for me :-*
I have told my daughter over and over again that she is not to blame and must not feel any guilt, the problem was entirely Archie's, through no fault of his own either, bless him. She has accepted this fortunately.
The coming days and weeks are going to be very hard, because he was such a clingy dog and my world had revolved around him constantly for over 2 years, 24/7. We are surrounded by lots of countryside and walks and it'll be so hard but I must force myself to keep on walking, otherwise I'll go crazy. Lesley x
-
Dear Lesley, you have been so unlucky. With Odie and now Archie, my heart goes out to you and your family. :'( :'(
No one could have tried harder than you, and I guess it was inevitable but he was still your baby and I can't begin to imagine how you are feeling. :embarassed:
Don't feel bad about others because each and every one of us feel your pain and wish we could ease it for you.
Enjoy your walks if you can and remember the happy memories :-* :-*
-
Dear Lesley,
I hope these words will help you.
A Letter From Your Pet In Heaven
To my dearest family,
some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know,
that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from the Bridge
HereI dwell with God above.
here there's no more tears of sadness.
Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy.
just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that i am with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you
when my life on earth was through
God picked me up and hugged me
and He said " I welcome you"
"It's good to have you back again
you were missed while you were gone
As for your dearest family
They'll be here later on"
God gave me a list of things
that he wished me to do
And foremost on the list
was to watch and take care of you.
And when you lie in bed at night
and the day's chores put to flight
God and I are closest to you
In the middle of the night
I wish that I could tell you
all that God has planned
If I were to tell you
you wouldn't understand
But one thing is for certain
though my life on earth is o'er
I'm closer to you now
than I ever was before
When you're walking down the street
with me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps
only half a step behind
And now I am contended ...
that my life was worthwhile
Knowing as I passed along
I made you smile.
-
Oh Honeysmum that is rather beautiful and says so much.
Lesley, yes we all feel your pain as this forum is a close knit group of like minded people and we all know that you will be there to support any of us in our times of need. The coming days may be hard but read Honeysmum's poem a few times and you will be feeling happier deep down knowing that you protected everyone and I include Archie in that.
Mark.
-
An awful time and an awful decision for you to have to make. No words can describe...
-
So very sorry to read your news, I guessed too that it had happened again.
-
I echo the comments already made on here Lesley - you and your family have my respect for persevering so long with Archie, he was a very lucky lad to have found you all.
My thoughts are with you xx
-
So sorry to read this. You did everything you could and it must have been so hard for you. Thinking of you and your family :bigarmhug:

I too am so very sorry to hear this and my heart goes out to you. I have followed your journey with Archie and nobody could have done more for him than you. Archie is at peace now. Sleep tight Archie x
-
So very, very sorry to hear this. I echo everyone else's comments. Such a terribly hard thing to do but no-one could have tried harder. Be kind to yourself.
-
Thank you so much :luv:
I've been a little better today, apart from when a few mums in the school yard came up to me to say they were sorry to hear about him and I nearly lost it again :'(
I keep finding treats/toys and poo bags in a variety of places, which sets me off.....
Thank you for the lovely poem honeysmum - hankies have been well used :luv:
-
so sorry :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I'm so so sorry xx

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. As you well know, we have been through something very similar a long time ago. There will always be two holes in your heart - one Odie shaped and one Archie shaped. Over time, the edges of the holes will become blurred but they will always be there.
When we lost our beloved Harriet so soon after Buffy (7 months between them) even though we had other dogs, I thought my heart had literally broken. I did exactly what you are advised not to do and almost straight away we got Dexter.
It took me a while to fall in love with him.
I liked him - who couldn't like a ball of white fluff who was so cute?
I went through the motions of trying to love him. I cuddled him. I trained him, I cleared up after him and I fed him.
But he wasn't my beloved cockers - he wasn't my girls and I felt so incredibly guilty. He was here and they weren't here any more.
I have no idea why, but one morning, I came downstairs and looked at him. He looked back at me. I fell hopelessly, totally and irrevocably in love with him.
He is my shadow and the early days have certainly not made any difference to the incredible bond I now have with him. I know he will never replace my cockers - but he gave the whole family a reason to smile again.
I really hope that soon, you and your family will feel ready to have a reason to smile.
Take care of yourself and take time to grieve. Even now all these years later, I adore cockers and miss my girls terribly. I can never replace them. But I have new reasons to smile.
Big, big hugs to all of you and I really hope your daughter is ok too.
-
Beautifully said Penny.
-
So sorry for you. X
-
So sorry to read this.
I can only imagine how hard it was to make that decision, but you know you did everything possible and more to help Archie - and his life may have been short, but he knew a life-time of love.
Run Free Archie. xx

So sorry Lesley xx :bigarmhug:

Just read this and wanted to say I'm so sorry for you loss and the heartache you've had. Sue and Misty xx
-
Thank you :luv:
-
So, so sorry. I always read your posts because I had difficulties with my beloved Bobby too, though nothing as unpredictable. I know how heartbreaking it is to lose the friend you have worked so hard with, It's part of your life.
My sister in law had to make a similar decision with her teenage labradoodle, which launched itself , unprovoked, at her daughter.
You are not alone in your grief. I hope you can find a place in your heart for another four legged friend. After Bobs unexpected terminal illness, I have found solace in a little rescue mongrel who brings smiles to complete strangers that she grins at, and is a therapy dog. Bob and Archie couldn't have done that, you and I would have been sued!!
Xxxxx
-
I'm so sorry. Haven't been on here for ages but the last time I was here I was reading your story. I don't think it's that uncommon. Many of us know someone who's had to make a similar decision. I hope your daughter is ok. And I hope one day another wee dog will find and who'll give you nothing but joy.
RIP Archie.
Diane xxx
-
Thank you everyone :luv:
The last time when I lost Odie, I knew I wanted another cocker and fairly quickly but this time round, I'm just deflated. I'm not thinking of getting another, it's just too painful, having had, and lost, two dogs in two years :'(
What I am finding hard is walking places I went with him (basically everywhere nearby) or meeting another dog, especially a spaniel. I was thinking of maybe advertising locally to see if anyone wants their dog walking etc in my village. That way, I get my doggie fix without committing to another one myself. Just a thought.... Lesley x
-
It's understandable that you don't want to get another dog yet, only time will heal. Do you have a rescue centre near you that you can go to and help walk the dogs? They are always looking for people to help. Meanwhile take care of yourself and your family and remember the good times xx
-
Lesley that's a lovely idea :D
When we lost The General I was so
distraught I was determined that I wouldn't go
there again, me and Jus could spend more
time in St Kitts etc.
It was Jus that brought Pepper and Ellie to our
house and it was supposed to be temporary, I managed
to guard my heart for a long time and then , well,
you know the rest.
None of us know what's round the corner and getting
a furry fix sounds just the ticket for your blues.
Big Hugs little chicken xxx

Aw, thanks! I'd do some fostering but I just can't enclose my garden. I managed to use stock fencing and panels for Archie but he was a bit dim, bless him and he never tried to escape through or jump over it! Of course, as I've got kids, fostering may not be a good idea (unknown quantity etc). Anyway, time will tell....
-
Hi Lesley
Have you thought of looking at the www.cinnamon.org.uk
It is a charity that works to assist elderely people who struggle to walk there pets, and they are always looking for volunteers.
:bigarmhug: Julie
-
I think walking other dogs is such a good idea Lesley. We'd had dogs all our married life, (Dylan is number ten), and when Milo died In January it was the first time we had ever been dogless. We had recently retired and were booked to go to France in our motorhome in March for three months, Milo had got his pet passport etc. so we went without him, and although for the first time we were able to into shops and museums together instead of taking it in turns, it was awful as so many people in other vans had dogs with them, and our van seemed so empty. We got back in June, and going for walks without a dog seemed pointless, we felt like spare parts. We found we got less fit as we didn,t walk so much, also people Don't speak to,you on walks when you don,t have a dog. So eventually after much soul searching we got Dylan in August.
I never thought of volunteer dog walking, what a good idea to get a doggy fix without having to give your heart away, and to give you space to grieve and to heal a bit, and to temporarily fill the dog shaped hole in your life.

Sounds like a good idea :D

I've looked at Cinnamon Trust website and there is no-one local who needs anything at the moment. It needs to be very local as I work from home and have school runs still to do. I have accosted a vet neighbour of mine, who has a very hyper choc worker and two other school run mums with dogs, saying I'm available for walks etc should they get stuck. They all mentioned they'd seen me walking round the village, looking very forlorn!
-
how about doggy holidays. we have a doogy care business near us who wants people who can/ want put dogs up in their homes because owners do not want to kennel. Might be similar near you
-
I wanted to do that but again, they require a secure garden which I just can't do :-\

The Cinnamon map, like many websites, isn't always up to date... You could try giving them a ring..
Its such a valuable thing to do, and appreciated by dogs and owners alike.
-
I think it is a great idea doing some dog walking and the Cinammon trust would be a fab place to volunteer for if they needed people in your area. Or maybe help at a rescue centre. It would be great for you still to have contact with dogs and walking is so good for health and mental well being I find. I really feel for you having the heartbreak of losing two beautiful dogs so close together. You must be finding it so painful. I know when we lost Sweep to lymphoma in 2013 it broke my heart seeing dogs and I was in pieces if I saw a cocker. Gradually it got less painful but I couldn't face seeing another cocker facein the house so ended up with a mad choc lab! Just as loving but much more toy orientated and boisterous. Makes us smile every day. Dogs, although a tie in many ways, do get you up and out and are so loving and faithful. Give yourself plenty of time. Looking back we got Milo too soon and I hadn't allowed myself time to grieve properly for Sweep. Sending love and hugs to you hunny. Take care

Dog walking for a rescue would be great if there's one near you. Just a thought but do you like cats? Cats Protection use foster homes. I can understand your need for a dog fix. I'm always in need of a cat fix but we just cannot get a other (too near road).
-
I love cats too, I had two before I met my husband (who isn't a huge fan). I did look at a few cat rescues and they seem to state you need a room spare for the cats?! We'll see, maybe in the New Year....
-
I understand the need to dog-walk. It's like a drug to me, have to get a fix of it. But there are lots of ways of doing other dog stuff. My OH and I both do homechecks for rescues- I also do follow-up visits and help with advice. Also you could just advertise in something like a parish magazine- there are often elderly or disabled people struggling to give their dogs a quality of life but don't ask for help. They accept it if it's offered though.
-
Dear Lesley, I haven't logged in for a while and am so deeply saddened by your news. Sending you positive thoughts and hope you find a way to relieve the heartache.
x
-
Thank you :luv: I am doing OK, apart from when I saw a tiny choc cocker puppy in the school yard for the first time a few days ago :'( It was just so sweet (can't resist looking, even though I've had 2 nightmare puppies :P).
I seem to be coming across cockers I've not seen before round our village and that's when it's hard for me :-\
