Title: Blue Roan has a few orange bits!
Post by: SophieBlueRoanLover on December 02, 2012, 11:42:34 AM
I was wondering if anyone else's blue roan has any other colours than black, grey and white?

I recently noticed that Henry has orange fur between a few of his toes (the skin looks pink, like his white fur skin). His mum was an orange roan, and dad a blue roan. Some of the hair under his chin looks a little ginger too. His fluff looks particularly brown sometimes (especially in sunlight).

Alfie's back and chin sometimes have a rust coloured appearance when caught in the sunlight, other times black bits are normal black! It was the same with our previous blue roan.

Red hair on the paws could be from the dog licking the area possibly from food allergies or environmental irritants.  If your dog is often walking in sea water that can also make the hair take on a reddish color.

The ginger brown fluff is probably just hair that needs to be stripped out.  When the hair is dead or bleached out from the sun black hairs turn reddish brown while liver hairs turn blonde.  Your pup is probably just due for his puppy coat to get stripped out.

Yes, the fluff that looks brown in the sunlight is puppy fluff - have tried to strip as much as possible out with a comb and elastic band, but there's always more, and he's not too keen on it.

The fur between his toes is definitely orange, not just stained (our last cocker had stained fur and it was more pinky-red than orange). He doesn't nibble his toes or go in sea water. I think he's just got some of his mum's orange colouring; he wants to be a tri-colour!

Occasionally as well in the sunlight Rileys black fur can look brown, even dark mahogany. My hubby didnt believe me till he saw with his own eyes.
Also under his chin is a little bit dark copper/mahogany, think thats common too.
Both Rileys parents were blue roan.

It's been suggested what you are describing means the dog carries for tan (or orange)?  My blue (who has some tan hairs on her feet) produced some "and tan" pups.

Oh well, just got him "done", so no carrying that tan gene anywhere!

Ozzie has a red-ish tinge in the sun but its possibly down to his grandmother being a blue roan and tan cocker and some of his great grandparents being orange roans :) Its the same with black labradors that have yellow or fox red labs in their ancestory, they get a red tinge in the sun, our show type lab was like that :)

Yes, my black and white Border Collie has a red tinge in the sun.  She carries for red (coat colour) and for tan (markings) :)

Sophie, yes - Ozzy has some orange between his toes, and around his nose when the sun shines on it, also there is a faint orange tinge to his head occasionally.  His dam was a blue roan and his sire was an orange roan.

It's saliva staining etc.  I have a blue girl (now 10) that gets orange between her toes, she's from a completely blue line, so no chance of orange/tan colour.

I don't think it is saliva staining, as he has a slight touch of it on his neck hair too, where no saliva can reach! Plus it's only inbetween a few specific toes, not all of them, and I've never noticed him munching there over anywhere else. Our last cocker had pinkish fur around his mouth, which was definitely from saliva staining, but I'm not convinced that Henry's is. I also thought that the staining only occurred if the dog's diet had tomato pomace in it, and he's been on Acana Wild Prairie for 6 weeks which has no tomato pomace in it, and the hair's still growing ginger!

He's looking a lot less brown all over now most of his puppy fur has been stripped out, but still looks a bit brown when the sun is shining directly onto his ears and fluffy legs.

Pippa is raw fed but still has orange saliva staining between some of her toes.

My blue roan and tan girl has a lot of tan on her muzzle and legs but when she had a litter which produced one like her, he has very little tan compared to her.  He is like you describe with only a very little tan between his toes and under his chin.  If you didn't know his mum, you might even miss it!

Clover is a light blue roan out of an orange roan mum and a black and white dad. She has a splash of orange hair on the inside of her ear flaps - hardly noticeable but it's there. She also has that 'staining' (if indeed that is what it is) - browny pink between her toes and round her mouth, and when she was clipped dead short, on her neck it looked decidedly pink but I put that down to dye from her collar. However, now her white neck fur has grown again, it is not stained like the clipped fur was, so......???? who knows! In sunlight the black fur on her body has a brownish tint, just like my black Oriental cat has!

I have a blue road cocker - with orange hair between every pad! It's just his hair colour, not anything to do with soreness or allergies.

Ozzy too!!!  His mum was a blue roan, and dad an orange roan.

Pippa's isn't caused by soreness or allergies, just her licking her feet clean.
