Well, was trimming (and de-matting ph34r ) Honey earlier, and discovered she'd been chewing at her armpit... figuring there was a bad matt that was bothering her, as she's matting really easily at the minute and avoiding grooming as often as she can, I went to trim back, and noticed the skin looked sore... worried for a moment that I'd missed a really big matt and it had caused the soreness, I trimmed back, to find 2 pieces of plant matter sticking out of very clear holes... they were about an inch long each, and hollow, so looked like bits of hay or something... and there's a huge lump in her armpit.
Cue trip to the vets. Anyway, vet worried that there may be more in there, so she is booked in for lump removal on Friday... poor doggie.
She hates the vets, and has only ever been there for spay and vaccinations, so this isn't going to help matters... :-\
-
Oh no, poor Honey. Well done for spotting it, it isn't easy when they are so hairy.
Hope she gets on ok on Friday.
-
Aww poor girl...hope all goes well at the vets....they are a nightmare when they are so hairy....I have just gave in and got my two rumped as it was getting impossible to keep them well groomed and they seemed to spend most of the day damp >:D
-
Hope Honey is OK on Friday
-
Aww, poor girl
Obviously totally your call, but my boys have had several such things happen in the past due to grass seeds >:D
I usually bathe the lump with warm salt water a couple of times a day for a few days and that usually draws any gunk and any left over grass seed out and it heals up nicely
You might want to try this first before going down the vet route on Friday...but this is just my experience of course
Hope its all cleared up soon
-
Sorry to hear this Claire :'( Poor Honey :'(
Hope her op. goes well on friday & she doesn't get too stressed, bless her  :luv:
I know how hard it is leaving them at the vets & even more so when they are anxious :'(
-
poor Honey :(
fingers crossed for a quick op and speedy recovery xx
-
Oh poor girl. Hope the vet gets it all sorted for her.
Sending positive thoughts from us all to Honey and to you. Xx

Have done this with her paws on a couple of occassions... but my concern is that while the lump is very hard, there is absolutely no gunk coming out, which does make me suspicious there's more in there... and if it escalates we're into Christmas and I really don't want to risk emergency vet visits, which would be far more stressful for all of us... :-\
Thank you all for the good wishes!

Poor Honey. Hoping all goes smoothly on Friday and that all heals quickly :luv:

Poor little Honey :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: hope all goes well Friday :luv:
-
Oh poor Honey, hope all goes well on Friday and she doesn't get too distressed. :luv:

Cassie had a grass seed penetrate the muscle in her right "armpit" this Summer. At first the vet thought that she had hurt or strained her shoulder and put her on painkillers. A couple of days later I found a damp patch in her arm pit. Thinking it may be an abscess or something I bathed it in salt water. The vet then found the tin y hole where the grass seed had penetrated (and abscessed) Operation followed and was fine, the problem was keeping the stitches in. That area is so mobile and there had to be three attempts at staples and stitches before the wound healed.Do try to keep Honey from jumping on chairs etc.
The collar was a nightmare and just distressed her so, they do sell flexible more forgiving ones on Amazon. Cass wore my Tee shirts and a sock on her paw (that could scratch)
This is Cass sporting a "next" teeshirt after her stitches were put back in for the third time

Hope everything goes ok on Friday and it isn't too stressful for Honey or you.
I have found more grass seeds in armpits than ears!!
-
Oh no! I know exactly why you are so worried and really hope it goes as smoothly as possible :-* :-*. Millie is due an armpit trimming session but I'm working up the courage :shades:
-
Clover had a very similar experience back in the summer - a couple of grass seeds were removed from her armpit, all healed, so we thought, then another swelling came up, grew bigger and hard, vet advised GA and cut out lump. Inside lump was more grass seed particles! The vet advised we get her clipped off as her long fur was trapping the grass awns which then worked their way into her skin and began to 'travel' - hence we now have Clover clipped off every 6-8 weeks and it is surprising how quickly her hairy armpits grow back in again!!! :shades: Best of luck for Honey's op - am sure she will be fine though, and enjoy a bit of mollycoddling when she gets home again! (Worst bit for us was lead walking until the stitches could come out as Clover just does not DO lead walking! Nightmare!)
-
Oh poor Honey. Sending :bigarmhug: and healing thoughts for Friday.

Hope all goes well on Friday, and that honey is feeling better soon. :bigarmhug:
-
Everything crossed it goes well on Friday and Honey's feeling absolutely fine over christmas :luv:
-
Hope all goes well - Wilf and Roobs have had similar in that area on occasion but thankfully the vet managed to pull out the offending grass seed
You could also try silica as well
-
Poor honey - hope all goes well tomorrow.
-
Thinking of Honey today :luv:
Hope it all goes well.
-
Hope op goes well today and Honey home and recovering asap x
-
Hope all goes ok today. Let us know how she is XX
-
Fingers all crossed for Honey today :luv:
-
Still no word from vet.... dropped her off at 9.30... poor doglet was shivering and shaking while waiting to go in....
-
Bless her, I hope everything has gone well and that she is soon home and on the road to recovery :luv:
-
Hope all goes well for Honey and that she is soon home with you x
-
She is home - feeling very sorry for herself, but mood improved when I swapped the lamp-shade for one of Isobel's baby-gro's and gave her a small amount of Turkey mince, in preference to the tin of Hills prescription stuff we were given.
:luv:
Vet said there wasn't "much" debris left in there (which obviously means there was something still there) and they had to remove scar tissue, so I think whatever was there had tracked from somewhere else....
-
Glad to hear Honey is home :luv:
Hope her recovery goes well Claire & you all have a peaceful night  :luv:
-
Pleased she is back home with you.
-
Good news that she is home, and that the lampshade has gone. :luv: Get well soon Honey.
-
So glad Honey is back home safe and well. Hope she soon feels a lot better.
-
She is still feeling very sorry for herself. She was desperate for a walk, so OH suggested a 100 metre trip down the road, to fool her, and she didn't even make it that far.
OH slept downstairs with her last night, and I guess he's doing the same tonight...
Poor wee doggie...
-
poor Honey.. gentle squidges for her, and you both x
-
Poor Honey. Hoping she feels more like herself tomorrow :luv:
-
Poor Honey, hope she has a good nights sleep and is soon back to normal. Please tell her she can't be poorly for Christmas! and give her a gentle squidge from me and Ellie.
-
Sorry to hear Honey's had a nasty problem with her armpit Claire & that she's still not feeling to well at the moment, poor love :'(
Hopefully she starts to pick up again soon & shows signs of being on the road to recovery - it sounds like the visit to the vets alone has caused her to be quite stressed let alone the OP too :-*
lots of gentle get well hugs from all of us :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Well she's more lively today... :luv:
Hopefully she's on the road to recovery
-
Awww that's good to hear, hope little Honey is all better really soon :luv:
-
Good to hear Honey is more lively today :luv:
-
Lovely news Claire. Keep it up Honey :luv:
-
great news Claire :luv:
-
Pleased Honey's OK now (well more or less anyway)
-
Well, wound is continuing to recover well, but Honey is still feeling very sorry for herself.
Unfortunately, due to the wound location, she has been strictly off-walks (she's had 2 trips on-lead to the local shop (5mins) and that's it) and we can't go out in the garden to play with her new Kong stick, either. I held off trying any clicker training too, as she gets very over-excited with that and jumps around a lot. But now she is spending long periods hiding in her crate (she thinks every time I try and get her attention I'm going to do something rotten to her :'( like give her a tablet or check her wound or, even worse, groom her).
Hopefully once she can run about a bit more, we can do a bit more bonding again... :luv:
-
Poor Honey :'(
It must be awful for both of you at the moment, but I'm sure once she's well enough to be out doing things again she'll go back to her usual self :luv:. Do you know when she'll be allowed on walks?
William has been on limited exercise and antibiotics because of an inflamed and infected pad on his left front foot. No idea what caused it but it's looking normal again now. He had about 9 days where he was hardly walked at all because all the mud and water was making things worse, but he's always been relaxed about having the occasional day at home and just snuggles up next to me or follows me round the house to inspect whatever I'm doing :luv:.
-
I'm sure she will be ok soon and forget the tablets etc. Cassie was very much the same, one day very sorry for herself and the next .. EH UP I'm up for anything!!!
-
It's horrible when you can't explain 'why' to a dog :-\
You are doing amazingly well keeping her contained and I know how hard it must be for you both :bigarmhug: Hoping that she heals quickly and can get back to her old self very very soon :luv: :luv:
-
She finally seems to be getting back to her normal self - she even tried to steal a chocolate this morning (from a box which had been in easy reach since before Christmas!).
We go to get her stitches out on Monday, and hopefully can start building up walks after that...
-
Lovely news :shades: :luv:
-
Stitches all out and, once the soreness from where the stitches were rubbing has healed we can start building up walks.... :D
However, as I was the one holding her while the stitches were removed, I suspect the work on rebuilding her trust has just been undone.
And she gets to go for her vaccinations next week...
-
That is good that all the 'nasties' are out of the way and Honey can have some fun time with you, and rebuild her trust and her bond. Let's hope the rain eases off now too for some nice walks.

Can you delay her vaccinations for a few weeks until she's back on track with trusting you?
-
So glad she's getting better. But sorry that you have had to be the one doing the nasty things :'(
At work I'm always so grateful that I have several other excellent horse trainers to restrain my little scared ponies when they need the vet. Wish I had the same for Millie!
-
Vaccinations are already a month late as the reminder got lost in the post.... ph34r
And I think it's probably better to get them over and done with rather than getting her more relaxed only to take her back again....
And, while I hate the fact that I had to, I'm glad it was me holding her down... deep down she does trust me and I think it would freak her out far more for anyone else to be restraining her.... :-\ She's a funny little dog, but somewhere in her mind she seems to sense that I do things for her benefit, whereas she's not so confident that other people have the same idea...

You can actually leave it a few months or more before you're out of time with vax - I often don't vax on time
