Title: Shadow lump from 2010 grown :(
Post by: GailyK81 on January 31, 2013, 11:15:13 AM
Hi everyone, I have neglected cockers online for a long time and now I really need you all.
The little lump shadow had 2010 which was found by vet to be inconclusive has returned with avenge nice and as we speak shadow is at the vets.
Vet has called me to say that he can't remove the lump without the leg and he is to take X-rays of chest and lymph glands and will get back to me in afew hours.
I am distraught , so sad my little character please all fingers crossed. Although I don't know about an amputation I can't think straight

What a terrible shock for you :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Sending lots of positive thoughts that you get some good news when the vet has done the x-rays and that nothing drastic has to be done. But if amputation is necessary please remain positive. I've known a good few dogs that have had that done and have been amazed at how well all of them have adapted.

There's a Cocker here on COL called Delilah who had a leg amputated a year or so ago and I think her mum still comes on COL. I'm sure if she sees this she'll be able to tell you about her experience.

Thinking of you and Shadow :luv:

What a shock for you, sending lots of these  :bigarmhug: to start with.
With the results of the X-rays I'm sure you vet will be able to give you a much clearer picture, which will help you I'm sure. When we only know half the facts our minds naturally go into overdrive, which isn't good but can't be helped.

There was a thread a while back about a cocker who had a leg amputated, sorry cant remember how long ago it was but I do know the dog was just fine and adapted really well.

My sister had a rescue dog who'd had a leg off due to an accident/cruelty and she was like a little rocket, it didn't slow her down!!

I hope they get back to you soon, keep busy xx

Edit - I think Elaine and I posted at the same time!

Sending you a big hug :bigarmhug: and hoping that when the vet phones you it won't mean an amputation and that you'll soon have your baby home. Hope all the x-rays etc are clear and that he can give you some good news.
Also sending hugs to Shadow.
I'm sure you are finding all this very difficult, but it might be of help to you to know that there is a large dog rottweiler type that lives in our town who has an amputated leg and he seems to manage on three legs ok.

Thinking of you

Sorry to read this, my thoughts go out to you, but if the worst does happen a 3 legged dog is not very disabled. I have seen a couple on shoots over the years and they still do the same job as there 4 legged friends, only limitations were they could not jump fences so well.

My brothers jack russell had to have an amputation. The little dog just got up one morning lame .He coped very well indeed, could still run about with paul and his other dog. Unfortunatley  whatever  the cause of the lameness returned to a second leg and Bodkin had to be pts.

What I want to say, is if it happens, don't underestimate your Shadow.  I wish you both well

Thank you all it has been a really hard day for us today and we once again are still no further forward, my little fur ball shadow is home, vet has done lymph tests and fine needle biopsy he did not want to do surgical biopsy as he did not like look of X-rays. We have to wait a week vet says that he really is baffled with the lump and the X-ray shows shadowing but not something he has sen before, after shaving the area of the lump which is side of approx one half golf balls on his hind leg front of paw it looks very hot and red, he has prescribed strong anti biotic and pain killers for ten days and he hopes that it may reduce the lump as from the X-ray a lot of it looks like swelling with (what I hope is infection) if the anti biotic starts to reduce redness swelling then finger crossed it is not sinister so awaiting biopsy results pray for reduction of swelling and redness with the anti biotic and it may get us through this next 7 days waiting.
Because of the shock I could not think past my poor little fella with 3 legs being a terrible thing for him but alive and 3 legs is better than the alternative thank you all once again you are a great help in times of need.  I will keep you all updated

Love gail & shads ( as we now call him)

Aw, thanks for the update and glad you are feeling more positive about the possible loss of a limb if it has to come to that. However, let's hope it doesn't. It will no doubt seem like a long time waiting for the results of the biopsy etc. Such a pity an instant result can't be got! Will keep all fingers and toes crossed for a good outcome after the antibiotics have had time to do their work - maybe it is some kind of deep seated infection.... keep us posted.

Hi all, update on shadows lump, once again biopsy came back inconclusively, anti biotics have not reduced the lump and to top it off where the biopsy was done has now gone red and sore and bleeding, on thurs went back to vet for results and it was waste of time he said we can have another surgical biopsy but I really don't see the point if already one surgical biopsy and one needle biopsy have come back inconclusive, so he left it by saying he does not know what to do now as a way forward, he said radiotherapy a option it Might reduce lump (might) seems bit ludicrous when he saying he don't even know what it is and on Thursday he said he will ask another vet opinion he took picture of lump and said he will ring us STILL WAITING, all of this cost a lot of money I don't really have as insurance won't pay as he had little lump two years ago I am not really very happy and in the meantime poor shadow is still limping, he is on anti biotic and anti inflammatory but not sure they doing anything.  Sorry for big rant but I at a loss. How do I upload a picture I was going,to,upload a picture,of,lump see if anyone come across anything like it on here
Thanks

Aw - so sorry to hear this. I suppose the silver lining is they have not said it is definitely cancerous but a firm diagnosis would allow the right treatment. I do think you were right to say no to chemo when they have not proved it is cancerous and I hope the other vet can help with it.

I have not heard or seen anything like this so cannot help that way I am afraid.

Sorry that you still haven't got a definitive diagnosis and that the lump is still there. Poor Shadow, and what a worry for you :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I hope the vet giving the second opinion comes up with a diagnosis for you and that it's good news

Hi my pharoah hound had a lump like this about the size of e pea for two years then vanished for about 10 months then new lump which grew to about golf ball size when she started to get uncomfortable with it we had a  biopsy this caused it to suddenly inflame and bleed terribly with antihistamines and antibiotics we did start to get it to heal  it was a type of cancer that sheds cells that cause allergic reaction vet advised us on amputation .
Unfortunately by the time this was arranged more lumps were found in places that we could not have surgery done so we managed her health with antihistamines and painkillers but she was much older than shadow at 13
I am sure you are making the right deision for shads and hope you get a diagnosis soon :bigarmhug:

I'm so sorry Shadow is having more trouble. It sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place. If money were not an issue I'd say get a referral to a specialist. Thinking of you both and hoping the lump is benign.

So sorry to read about your awful news. It is horrible when something like this happens and unfortunately my William has developed a lump also which the vet has said he doesn't want to operate on as it could well be cancerous and cause it to spread. He is almost ten though and this is nothing like has happened to your boy. Fingers crossed that all will be well, and sending lots of good wishes your way. It is not nice to discover a lump anywhere on your dog, and you always think the worst, so I hope you get a good result for him.
