We have had Benson at the vets on Monday as he has been very lethargic, depressed and just not interested in doing anything lately....not even walkies!!
He was diagnosed after x-rays as having Hansen Type 1 disc disease, he has calcified discs that are degenerating :'(
I was very upset to hear this as he is only 3&half years old but the vet seemed optimistic that an operation to remove the bad discs would give him a new lease of life, so he was booked in for the op the following day and I was feeling quite hopeful.
I then called the vets twice the following morning 8am & 10:45 to see if he had gone in for the op and how it was going etc. I got told both times he was being examined and by this point started to suspect something may be wrong!
The vet called shortly after to say they had run 2 lots of blood the night before and 2 lots that morning and his blood was very lipid and creamy (like strawberry milkshake apparently) on top of this he was severely anaemic, this prompted them to give him an ultrasound on his liver & spleen. They found nodules in his liver that appear to be normal and nodules in his spleen also.
I was allowed to bring him home pending more results from fresh bloods this was yesterday.
I have just had a call this evening from the vets to tell me that he has Hyperlipidaemia, his thyroid level was 3.3 when it should be between 13-15 so he has hyperthyroidism, he is still severely anaemic, the vet also believes he may have pancreatitis and is running more tests for this.
We have to go back Monday for fresh bloods and a check up.
I am so very upset for him he is only young and if we get him through this then we still have to get him through the spinal op of having 6 discs removed :'( :'( :'( :'(

Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts.
It's just so horrible seeing him so poorly, today he didn't wake up until 2:30pm then had some food and a wee and is back in his bed asleep :'(
We're back at the vets tomorrow evening for fresh bloods to be sent to the lab.
I have noticed that his skin on his belly is looking yellow so I'm going to ask about that. I've been checking his gums constantly like the vet said to and they still look pink but are a little pale. His red blood cell count was down at 22 so I'm hoping its come up tomorrow.
-
Big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: and lots of positive thoughts for you both :-* :-*

-
Poor you - what a lot to come to terms with in one fell swoop, and him being so young too!
Wishing Benson the best of all possible outcomes.
(((hugs)))
-
Poor Benson :( The yellow tinge to his tummy skin could have a few causes but with his anaemia it could be due to the breakdown of red blood cells and then as the body tries to deal with the by-products like bilirubin it becomes saturated. This results in the visible yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes. There are other causes of it and I would definitely speak to your vet about it. I might have missed it but is Benson on pred at the moment? I really hope he feels better soon. Hugs to both you and him.

I am not sure what pred is? He is not on any medicines at the moment because they're still waiting for more test results which is really frustrating but so far they have just changed his food to Royal Canin Fibre Response.
I should hopefully be getting a call from the vets today with some results and an appointment to start a treatment plan.
-
The vets just called he has confirmed its Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia.
He also has an under active thyroid. Won't know anymore until I go for the either tomorrow or the next day he'll call to arrange.
Sounds bleak :'(

Very sorry that Benson is so poorly, I do hope the vet can stabilise him tomorrow :bigarmhug:
-
Sorry I've taken so long to answer, had a crazy day at varsity! I'm so sorry Benson has AIHA :( Atleast you have an answer about him though. Its vital that he is treated asap so that his immune system can be brought under control and the destruction of those red blood cells can be stopped. They'll probably put him onto high doses of steroids (pred is a steroid) as well as other drugs to protect his tummy. Please, please get him back to the vet as soon as you can to start treatment, its vital.
Steff is right, CIMDA is a great group with a wealth of knowledge and support to offer on immune mediated diseases. They're really great.
I really hope Benson will stabilise soon. Big hugs to both you and him!

When the vet called with the diagnosis this morning I was really surprised he didn't want him back today having spoken to 3 Haematologists and them all coming to the same conclusion! Instead I was just told he would be in touch once they had a definite diagnosis for his hyperthyroidism. Now I feel like he's just being left to suffer....I told him that there had been no change and he had been sleeping most of his days and evenings and he just told me it was to be expected
I am getting on the phone at 8am tomorrow morning and asking for him to be seen, I actually had no idea it was so dangerous until I read up on CIMDA this evening!
I am so upset :'(
-
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you and Benson, hopefully they will see him straight away in the morning
-
Hypothyroidism is usually associated with profound lethargy so the vet may be attributing his lack of energy to that, and correctly so, but anaemia also causes lethargy. The AIHA definitely needs to be addressed though as it can be a very serious condition and the sooner treatment is started the better. I'm not questioning your vet though, he has a vast amount of experience compared to me.
I really feel for you. It is so difficult to watch your happy, tail wagging friend become a recluse. Cooper had a really tough time with Immune mediated polyarthritis and I really struggled to get him stabilised and on the right track.
You're welcome to pm if you want.
-
I would be asking the vet to put him on some sort of treatment. Busters blood count was down to 10 when he needed a blood transfusion & was on steroids straight away. He is now on much more medication but after the vets thought we were going to lose him his blood count is now up to 41 so keep positive even though i know it is hard. We have had an emotional 3 weeks but he is here full of life again and the support from cockersonline was invaluable. Will be thinking of you both x
-
Just a quick update we're due at the vets in an hour so hopefully get some meds and more answers. I will keep you all posted x
-
Good luck, thinking of you
-
Wishing you good news this afternoon

Good luck, thinking about you and Benson. :bigarmhug:

Same from us xx

Just wondering how things went at the vets - has Benson been put on any meds yet?
-
Hi everyone, well I have good news. He is on meds for his under active thyroid and while we were there they took a bit of blood and spun it and his red blood cell count has risen from 22% on Monday to 28% today!
His anaemia is regenerative meaning his body has kicked in and his bone marrow are producing new red blood cells. He's only on half a tablet for the thyroid at the moment because they want to monitor him carefully in case he has another anaemic crash.
We're back for more bloods on Monday.
Very much more positive and I'm feeling so relieved and optimistic!
Thanks for all your support :luv:
-
So pleased to read more positive news on Benson's condition, and I hope his blood count continues to improve! Keeping fingers crossed for more good news after Monday's tests.

Thanks everyone, he's still sleepy but is definitely picking up. I got his thyroid tablet out this morning and offered it to him in my hand, he took it and crunched it up and it was gone! Proof again that my dog will eat anything :005:
-
Wow, thats impressive Benson, clever you, I have to disguise any tablets my two have to take.
Pleased you are improving.
-
Glad to hear the good news - hopefully things will get better and better.
-
Wow, thats impressive Benson, clever you, I have to disguise any tablets my two have to take.
Pleased you are improving.
I normally do but because he's now on a strict diet of the Royal Canin Fibre Response I thought I would try my luck without hiding it in food. I think he may get wise and then I'll be in trouble :005:
-
Good boy Benson, but I can't help thinking you are doing yourself out of some nice tasty bites :005:
-
So pleased to read more positive news on Benson's condition, and I hope his blood count continues to improve! Keeping fingers crossed for more good news after Monday's tests.
