Title: age for first litter
Post by: chris lock on February 27, 2013, 05:20:48 PM
I have a working cocker bitch and she will be 4 at the end of november 2013, is she too old to have a first litter if she was mated a month after her first birthday?

Sorry, I wrote that I had a working cocker bitch who will be 4 at the end of november 2013, her season would be due early december which would make her 4 years and a week or two; does anyone think this is too old for a first litter? She has been eye tested and comes from FTC lines.

If she is lean and fit, then no 4 is probably not too old for a first litter but obviously risks increase with age & she is older than the ideal age for a first litter. It's good you've eye tested her, but she really needs to be DNA tested for prcd_PRA & FN and ideally hip scored too. The clinical eye test is of limited value by itself as it's just a snap shot of the eyes at a given time (it can't tell the breeder whether that dog is a carrier of prcd_PRA or whether she/he will develop the disease in time, as the DNA test does). Here's some info from a Working Cocker perspective: http://www.workingcockerhealthscreendirectory.com/healthissues.htm
