Title: Im new to this breed... advice please.
Post by: bethanmillard on March 07, 2013, 12:08:17 AM
I pick up my 8 week puppy in a few days. I've done a lot of research on the breed and they seem exactly what I need. My puppy comes from a show line?
I'm a bit panicking because I normally grown up with older dogs so this is my first puppy. She's had one jab and needs two more. Few questions

. Do I take her to my vet straight away when I receive her for the other 2 jabs?

. Do they mault a lot?

. What foods do I give her?

.  Are they easy to train?

. When can I take her for walks.

So many questions. Some advice would be great.

Hi Beth

Firstly, I notice you've put a question mark by "show line" as if you are unsure whether she is show or working type.  Do you want a show type puppy, if so you will need to clarify this with the breeder.  I've heard of people ending up with a working type when they wanted a show type.

I had a sale contract with my breeder which included giving me a few days to take Toby to the vet for a checkup, so I would choose a vet and make an appointment for a few days after bringing her home, even if you haven't got a contract from the breeder.

Yes, they do moult a lot and need daily grooming.  Regular visits to a groomer too to keep the coat trimmed if you don' plan on doing it yourself.  Lots of posts on here regarding grooming that you can read.

You will need to keep her on the same food that the breeder is feeding her on for a while, so you don't upset her tummy.  Your breeder should give you a bag but find out what it is and get a supply ready.

As far as training is concerned, persistence and patience should be applied, using positive training methods.

The vet will advise you when she can be taken out for walks after the final vaccination.  In the meantime, buy a puppy collar and lead and get her used to those.

Good luck.  There's loads of help available here for you, so ask away when you need to.

Hi Beth,

Have you had much contact with the breeder so far in your young pups life, a good breeder should be providing a reasonable amount of information about feeding routines and as Mel says a supply of food to get you started.
The vaccination certificate and details of worming should also be provided.

I would certainly follow Mel's advice and take your pup to a vets as soon as possible to have her checked over and to make an appointment for the second innoculations. In the meantime don't put your pup down on the ground in a public place until a few days after the second  innoculations.

In terms of taking her for walks young pups should be restricted to very short outings for the first  few months, working up to around 30/40 minute sessions at six months.  At three months 15 minutes is enough in one session.

It is also not a good idea to let young pups run up and down stairs at a young age because of damage risk to their joints and tendons.

There is a lot of good advice on puppies have a look at Puppy care under the site features heading, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any concerns.
