Title: Show puppy groom?
Post by: Charleigh on March 07, 2013, 06:23:29 PM
Hi, my girl Teddy is nearing up to her first show and I was wondering what I should do in regards to grooming?
I was thinking wash, and brush?

I heard of the elastic band and comb, but what comb? If anyone could post a link to one would be great, and any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks x

Is Teddy in the puppy class or doing the puppy walk? I'm not sure how old she will be on the day of the show so I don't know what you've entered.

Puppies usually at least have their paws tidied up and a bath with shampoo and conditioner and blow dry a couple of days before the show so that the coat is clean and lies as flat as a fluffy puppy coat can. That would be enough preparation for a puppy walk but not really enough for a puppy class.

Is Teddy's breeder able to help you prepare her and have you been to any ringcraft classes to learn how to show Teddy? It's not as crucial if you're just doing the puppy walk as the idea of that is to give puppies some experience in a show setting and if you stay at the show for a while you can watch some of the classes to see what happens.

Showing is very competitive and if you enter classes when Teddy is too old for the puppy walk it will be easier for you if the two of you have had some training and practice at ringcraft classes and if you can find somebody experienced who can help with the grooming and presentation.

We go to ringcraft every week, but it's not breed specific. They are very helpful, i just wanted some advice abput groomig as no one there is experienced with cockers. I'm hoping to talk to the London cocker club sec to see if they can recommend me a groomer.

I'll get her a nice wash and blow dry then, perhaps the day before :)

I was recommended the spratts one by someone in my ringcraft class but she is also only just starting out so she couldn't give me much more advice than that, she did say about ringing the sec to get a good groomer.

She will be 6 months and we are entering the junior and minor puppy variety. She has a fairly nice walk and stand just loses concentration sometimes.

Thank you for the tips :)

You could always ask other cocker people there for advice.

Before we went to our first show, we went to a show and spoke to people who were more than happy to offer advice :) (although you are prone to finding the odd person who won't help).

Thanks, yeah I'm hoping to do that, I was going to try and go to one but I don't really have anywhere to leave her and I don't drive my mum does so I would have to either leave we with my mum then get the train to somewhere or drive with my mum and leave her at home alone but then I wasn't sure how long I would be, so this just seemed the easiest, wait until she's old enough to enter, get some experience for her and also can see if anyone can offer me any cocker advise :)

Thank you for your help :)
