Willow isnt very well at all this morning :'(
By mistake I set my alarm for an hour early and when I woke I noticed Willow wasnt on the bed, I called her and couldnt see her. I could then see her little head peering up at me but she would jump on the bed and her ears were down. I encouraged her on the bed but she wouldnt jump. She then carefully put her two front paws on the bed but her back legs were a bit shakey I lifted her onto the bed. She seems to be holding all of her body stiff including her neck. :'(
Im really hoping this doesnt mean her meningitis is back :'( :'(
I have called the Willows referral centre (out of hours) where she was under last year and she said the specialist we were under last year has an emergency appointment at 9am but I have to call at 8am as he has to approve this.
She also has diarrhoea. I got her some natural instincts from Crufts and with this a raw bone. I gave her only a small amount each day and her poops became sloppy but by yesterday it was like water so I took her off it. At first this morning I thought she was perhaps a bit weak due to that but when she had colitis as a pup she pooped more than this and wasnt weak....
Im going out of my mind with worry. Please send some healing vibes for our poorly baby

I've just spoken to Maddy and she's very upset. The specialist has examined Willow and thinks it could be a return of the meningitis and has referred willow to a neurologist. They are waiting to see him, hopefully after lunchtime.
Good luck Maddy, loads of love to you both xxxxx
-
oh that's bad news - hopefully if it is they have caught it early and Willow will be fighting fit in no time :luv:

Sending all our positive thoughts Willow's way and hoping that its just a nasty co-incidence of events thats making her present this way again.

Well I am a tad emotional to say the least. Thank you Mel (Neon) for updating earlier. I have cried for about 2 hours but now ive stopped so ive come on to update.
Willow didnt cry like she did last time when the specialist moved her neck but he did say there was resistance there. He is concerned about the lack of movement in her back legs and she is walking slowly like a crab. That is why the neurologist is going to take a look. She didnt present with this last time and from what the specialist said this isnt common in dogs with meningitis.
I did mention the raw food and he said she could have got a bug or something worse from that and that started the autoimmune response in her body again. Im really beating myself up over this as I thought trying the raw would be a good idea.
I should get a phone call after lunch to see what they are going to do, MRI or another spinal tap after the neurologist has seen her. Whatever happens my baby with be there over night :'(
I know she is in the best place but cant help worrying. I will update you once I know.
Thank you to the lovely col'er who have let me cry buckets down their ears this morning on the phone and have said things to calm me down and reassure me.
Please continue to send healing vibes in Willows direction, it worked last time so I have every faith they can make her well again xx
-
Oh Maddy :'( I am so sorry to hear your latest update :'(

I highly doubt it's the raw diet Maddy so don't beat yourself up about that ;)
Hoping Willow is home with you very very soon :luv:
-
Well Ive spoken to the specialist and I think its better news. Our specialist, a Neurologist and an orthapedic person has looked at Willow and my specialist says he is less concerned than he was on initial observation of Willow first thing as she is moving better. Neither one of the specialists are over concerned. The orthapedic person said there is subtle lameness in the legs and maybe a mild swelling in the ankle which could be poly arthritis which he said is an immune disorder as is meningitis. :-\
He gave me the option of him observing her overnight and if she gets worse they will put her under anesthetic and do a spinal tap and MRI or he could do it now. I asked him what he thought and he said he thought it better we wait because any anesthetic can present a risk.
If it is poly arthritis (not heard of it) they can give similar meds to before and additional tabs that she would only need be on for a short time like before.
Im a bit confused and realise I havnt asked enough questions. If you can think of any please let me know. I am going to go to work for a few hours now as I dont want to get the sack, I have enough on my plate at the mo......
-
Sending lots of positive thoughts for Willow & these for you :bigarmhug:
I stumbled across poly arthritis when I stupidly googled Harry's symptons (turned out to be hip dysplasia)
It's good that your specialist is happier with Willow now, everything crossed she continues to improve, sounds like she is in the best place with great vets
-
That sounds more positive Maddy, a couple of hours work might occupy your mind elsewhere. Willow seems to be in very good hands for now so will just keep sending you healing vibes :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I'm sorry to hear that but she seems to be improving. As said above she's in really good hands. Don't beat yourself up, you have always done the best for her and you have provided fantastic care and nurturing :luv:
Fingers and paws crossed and big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Just seen this post. Am SOOOO sorry to read about Willow, although the latest update does seem more hopeful. She is in the best hands and you've done the best thing by going into work to help you take your mind off things. Thinking about you and sending tons of positive thoughts and cyber hugs to you and Willow. Keep us posted. Diana :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

When you get back on ,I think
it's what Cooper has (Coopersmum)
Might be worth PMing Shannon.
Lots of love to you and Willow :luv:
steffxxx
-
Aww Maddy, what an awful time you are having :'( poor little Willow :luv: Everything crossed here too xx :bigarmhug:
-
Have they said anything about her stomach problems and diarrhoea Maddy as that to me doesn't tie in with the poly arthritis theory?
Hopefully she's had an anti-emetic at least to help ease that ;)
-
So sorry to read about Willow - lots of hugs and gentle licks from me Roxy and Bobby and lots of healing vibes too xx
-
There was a thread a while ago about polyarthritis http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=91764.msg1364025#msg1364025 with mention of a recommended website called CIMDA.
-
So sorry to hear this Maddy, what an awful time you are having :'( :'(
Lots of positive vibes being sent from here and fingers crossed Willow will soon be better. xx
-
Hi Maddy sorry to hear Willow is poorly again these AI conditions are a nightmare. Jasper has polyarthritis it was his primary presenting symptom with Lupus but it is a condition on its own too. Unfortunately one AI condition can make them more susceptible to another but keeping everything crossed here that she is stabilised soon. The good thing is you noticed straight away that something wasn't right and time is definately of the essence with our little AI babies. CIMDA is a great wealth of knowledge but I think you are already a member? Come on Willow stop worrying you mum. Big hugs Deb and Jasper.
-

He said he thought her tummy was a bug or something linked into the raw feeding. He didnt think the tummy was linked with the other apart from to say it could have sent her immunity into attacking itself like it did before (He used better terminology than that).
Ive just called again and they are going to get someone to call me back, ive asked about visiting her, but im not sure whether this would stress her out more when we left, I will let them make the decision. It might reassure we will come back for her. I hope they call me soon.

Hi Deb H thank you for that info. Ive never used that web site but was going to anytime soon as Willows boosters are due and I dont think I am going to get her done.
How did they diagnose Jaspers polyarthritis? How does it affect him? Thank you
-
So sorry to hear about Willow. Lots of positive vibes coming from us
-
Hi Maddy, Jasper started with classic shifting lameness which then progressed to every weight bearing joint including his jaw so he couldn't eat. It was quite obvious with him what it was not every case is as severe and he had other things going on too. Once the meds kicked in his symptoms eased and then disappeared. He has had a couple of relapses but has been in remission with his polyarthritis for a long time now. It's just the rest of his condition that causes all his problems bless him.
-
Dear Dear Willow - please get better soon and home so your mummy can stop worrying so much about you. Maddy - you did the right thing so obviously it was meant for you to set your alarm early so you could help her faster. I am very sorry that she has not been well and will send cyber hugs and healing thoughts along with all the others xx

I'm so sorry to hear your special girl is unwell.
I'm sending lots of positive thoughts to you both, be strong for Willow - like you were this morning as Sula said - and to the beautiful lady herself I'm sending heaps of love and endless 'get better' vibes. She's been seen to so quickly, don't beat yourself up over food!!!, just breathe & remain focussed because you'll have armfuls of cuddles to be giving her once she is back home with you both.
Thinking of you three. I'm here if you need me.... :-*

Lovely post.
Absolutely agree about the food. Just be grateful that you got Willow straight to the person she needed to see in double quick time. :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
So sorry to hear Willow is poorly again :-\
Hopefully they can get a clearer diagnosis tomorrow and she will be on the mend very soon. :bigarmhug:
Agree with Helen that it is unlikely that the raw food is to blame - vets will often be very anti raw feeding and so will clutch at that as an explanation for problems. :-\
-
I have only just seen this and am so sorry this has happened to Willow. Thinking of you.
Oh Willow, you have no idea how many people are so worried about you and praying for you to get better. Please try hard Willow, your mummy and everyone on here need and want you so much to be well again.
-
So sorry Willow's ill again :( It is so stressful and absolutely devastating when our little one's have had such a tough time before. Cooper had polyarthritis although it took an awfully long time, lots of stress and drama to get a diagnosis (which is still not definitive but based on his response to treatment). Normally they would do a joint tap and see what types of inflammatory cells are lurking around. If she does have it then steroids are the order of the day, just like the meninigitis, but other drugs can be added as well. Like DebH's Jasper, Coop has had a few relapses and at this point in time is on a very low dose of pred that I am trying to wean him off, but he is a happy active boy. CIMDA is a wonderful site, full of loads of knowledge and support. Hang in there, I know how difficult and worrying it is. Hugs to you and precious Willow from Coop and I.
-
Well they phoned me and I spoke to one of the nurses and she explained she had been a lot brighter this afternoon :D she went on to say she had been 'running' about. I said, 'by running do you actually mean running' to which she replied 'yes'. So I said let me get this right, she has gone from a dog that could not move this morning and put any pressure on her back legs and stiff neck to running about!!!??? :o
She sounds like she has slept a lot and she said she had been having fuss with one of the other nurses and Willow fell asleep with her head in her hand awwww :luv: She hasnt has any more diahreoa and she has eaten. She said the specialist will be in touch in the morning. I cant fathom it all out!! Having said that when she was ill with the onset of meningitis before she was very up and down.
I hope we get some answers tmw its so quiet without her at home. :'(
So glad she seems to be feeling better though :D
-
Just seen this Maddy, what a worrying day for you :bigarmhug: Glad Willow is doing better, and I hope you get more definite information tomorrow. :bigarmhug:
-
that's fantastic news! I hope that it's a full recovery for her. This is exactly how Jarv recovers from his near death stomach upsets - it's almost like a miracle (...I'm hoping that's all it was for her :luv: the last Jarvis had he couldn't/wouldn't walk for a few hours and I thought he'd been poisoned he went down so quickly ph34r )
-
Glad you've had some improvement. Best wishes for a full recovery.
-
This sounds quite classic for polyarthritis I know with Jasper we thought he was having us on at the start he'd be limping on one leg one minute fine the next then limping on a different leg after that. Stress played a huge part in his symptoms too, if he got too stressed out it made him much worse he really waxed and waned until his meds were sorted. We are all keeping everything crossed in our house that she is stabilising. Hugs to you all.
-
It's certainly contradictory news but there seems to be a great improvement on how Willow was this morning. Try to relax and get some 'me' time this evening and, hopefully, you'll get some answers in the morning. Willow is in the best place this evening to help her on the road to recovery. Sending you a big cyber hug. Diana :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Keeping everything crossed that she is home with you very soon...it is horrible at home without them x
-
Wishing willow a speedy recovery & I hope she's home you soon.

Glad to hear you've had some encouraging news about Willow and hope that she continues to improve and is home soon. :luv:

Glad to read your new news :luv:
She's a special girl, and a fighter :-*
Rest now Maddy, because she'll be asking for her ball-thrower in no time xxx

I was thinking this morning that it could be weakness from her tummy upset but when she had colitis as a pup she would poop more than that and be fine so I kind of ruled that out, but now you say that.....
Im wondering when the specialist mentioned poly arthritis whether he is clutching at straws although I do have every faith in them. Im confused. :-\
-
I called them again at 9 to see how she was doing and she said she was 'quite perky'
Imagine if I have rushed her to a referral centre and its only a bloody tummy bug!! I would be relieved if it were that though. Its just weird as she was holding her head and neck exactly how she was last June when she had the meningitis. Lying with her head right back. And why the resistance when the specialist moved her neck unless she remembers it from last time?
-
Better to have her straight there Maddy than think is it isn't it? I sincerely hope it was just a tummy bug... try to get some rest though and hopefully Willow will be home tomorrow :-*
-
Who knows if only they could talk :D
All the best willow get well soon sweetheart :luv:
-
Thanks Wendy. Going to bed soon. Ive been catching up on some work stuff this evening as I was in no fit state to go in this morning.
Its so weird at home without her :'( Hope she can come home tmw.....
-
As always so touched by the col support. Thank you xx
-
Better to be safe than sorry Maddy :luv: Just try to get some sleep, she is in safe hands......
I'll be thinking of you & Willow xx :bigarmhug:
-
Hey on the plus side I can have an extra 45 minutes in bed tmw morning as I dont have to walk Willow before work :005:
-
So happy for you that Willow seems to be feeling a lot better.
Enjoy your lie in tomorrow, but I hope, in the nicest possible way, that you don't get any more after tomorrow for a long time!

I know me too....I was only trying to make light of a painful situation. Missing her like hell.... :'(
-
So Glad she's feeling so much better :) Will be keeping fingers crossed that it is just a tummy bug. If it is polyarthritis then, like DebH has said, then waxing and waning is common. Cooper walked like he was a little tin soldier when he had it, only shuffling with nose on the ground. They can have back and neck pain with it because the little joints between the vertebrae can become inflamed too. Having said that, the biggest differential diagnosis for back pain in dogs is abdominal pain, so I will be hoping with all my heart that it is just an upset tummy and that it is passing now. Hope she's home today :)
-
Hi, just seen this and wanted to ask....
When you say about the way she was holding her head and neck, was it like it looked like she was getting ready to throw up...kinda stretching out her head.
I ask because my Ralph started doing this a few weeks back. He also wasnt himself, very quiet etc.
Took him to vets who said hes def got some pain in the back area but wasnt sure if it was back or stomach....
Anyway he was totally better a day or 2 later, so Im thinking it was a little bug or smething
Hope all goes well for you
-
Would also like to add, I wouldnt beat yourself up about raw feeding...I cannot see how a vet can possibly say a bug due to raw feeding. A bug is a bug surely, without lots and lots of tests surely they cannot tell where it came from. I would lean more towards the vet being anti raw feeding as alot are..

When Willow had meningitis last June when you called her she was cautious to turn and moved all of the top half of her body rather than just her head. When she slept she lay with her head right back. When we visited the specialist last time when he moved her head forward that was where the pain was.

He said it could be a bug, not from the food, or bacteria from the food, or the food not agreeing with her. He also mentioned salmonella. He has taken a stool sample.
-
Maddy so so pleased to read
sweet Willow is brighter :D
Hope she can come home soonest.

Fingers crossed that Willow can come home on this lovely sunny day x

Spud's not fed raw but he had horrible tummy bug a few weeks ago, so direct link difficult to prove unless very strange bacteria detected in the food and the stool x
-
Hi,
Hope Willow is lots better this morning and that she'll be home very soon.
:bigarmhug: love Liz and Jake
-
Very glad that she's feeling brighter :luv:
-
So glad she is feeling more perky. :D
There seem to be quite a few nasty bugs around at the moment. I still think though that, given her history, you took her to the right place.
Hope she can come home today.
-
Just checking in on Willow. How is she today?
Hoping she is gonna be on the road to recovery soon. Such a worrying time for you all.
In our thoughts still. Xxx

Good News
Maddy rang me an hour ago after hearing from the Specialist and has asked me to update for her as she has to go to work for an important meeting.
Willow is running around like a looney this morning  and is loads better. They think her symptoms were due to an upset tummy. Wills is coming home this afternoon but if any problems arise over the weekend, she has to go back and they will then do further tests but don't want to subject her to anything at the moment because she is making such good progress.
Glad you're feeling so much better Wills. :luv: :luv:
-
oops :005:
-
That's great news :clapping:  :cool4:
-
Phew ;)
I can understand with her medical history why they were so concerned and they are right to check every avenue (and I still hope they're wrong about the poly arthritis).
Glad the news is good this morning and Willow can probably join Jarvis on the Academy Award stage for best dramatic performance ph34r :luv:
-
What a relief that must be.
Well done Willow for bouncing back little girl.
Keep getting better......... :luv:
Love to all those that have been so worried about you too. Xxxx

Phew ;)
I can understand with her medical history why they were so concerned and they are right to check every avenue (and I still hope they're wrong about the poly arthritis).
Glad the news is good this morning and Willow can probably join Jarvis on the Academy Award stage for best dramatic performance ph34r :luv:
Jarvis? As if he would use those eyes to his advantage Helen. Shame on you. :005:

Raw feeding is not for every dog and extra care should be taken with any dog with compromised immune system as the bacteria in meat which can easily be handled by a healthy dog can make dogs with reduced resistance ill. Holding her neck and body in a stiff fashion whilst dithering are all symptoms of pain rather than specifics to one illness. I hope she continues to improve.
-
Great news i hope she continues to make a good recovery :luv: :luv:

Glad to hear Willow is on the mend. Dylan has a sensitive um. Last year he was having a chicken wing and had for a while. Then all of a sudden we got loose poos badly . My gut feeling sorry about the pun, that raw is not for him but I feed him the best quality food I can find, be it a kibble he has Acana. fish or chicken. Treat wise have to watch use Fish4 Dogs, or make my own liver cake. Also use these treats http://poochs.co.uk/shop/page/1?sessid=UZkyPA63Iol9m5iRsE4NSnMFKgog5Ztxf9d2gVAXkg9qloUfeYoQa5qnGLkrO5vg&shop_param=
Jessie has a stronger stomach and I am sure would be fine.
If Willow is fine on her kibble I would not worry, you know what suits here. All the best to you and Willow.
Erica.

Thanks all. :D
We collected Willow at tea time and she ran to my father and I in the corridor. ;)
The specialist described yesterday as a 'mystery' how she was lame in the morning and running about by the evening. After talking with the specialist he isnt ruling out meningitis coming back or the on set of poly arthritis as both of these have peaks and troughs but he didnt think the peaks and troughs could be so vast in just a few hours. We have to monitor her over the weekend and if we are still concerned he will undertake the tests under anesthetic on Monday. He didnt want to do the tests for the sake of it today when she had made such good progress in a few hours. She is on anti-biotics for her tummy. Due to her progress the specialist was thinking it could be a bug.
She was quite alert on and off on the journey home, seemed starving when we got her home and following a lovely meal of chicken and rice she crashed out for a very deep sleep for most of the evening. Her neck movement and ability to put pressure on her back legs alone isnt back to normal so that is slightly concerning. And where her ears are usually up and she has a twinkle on her eye, she is missing that at the moment. :'( I guess weve just got to wait and see.
We are pleased to have her home with us and im guessing the next few days will tell us more.
-
Great news Maddy :luv: give her cuddles from all of us Hun :-* :-* :-* x x x
-
Great news, hope she has had a good night. :luv:

Morning all.
Just to give you all a quick update.
To be honest I was a bit worried about Willow in the evening last night as she was in such a deep sleep and she would have a few minutes of energy and then zonked out again. When she tried to jump up she was slower and more cautious that usual. She still seemed to be holding her neck slightly stiff. My friend was here and to her she seemed fine but then we know Willow better than anyone else. Although I guess she had had a stressful time and probably didnt sleep there as she would here. Although I was so glad she had made such an improvement she wasnt back to her usual self. Maybe I am expecting too much but I was guessing if it was a bug she would of made a full recovery. She had more energy when we collected her and on the way home than she did all evening.
Today she seems full of the joys of spring we been for a very short walk and she has played. I have noticed a few subtle symptoms as she had when she was poorly last year. Holding her neck a bit cautiously when turning, slapping her chops, squinting (albeit very slightly) she is also more cautious when jumping up. I dont know if im looking for symptoms as she was so ill last year and im a bit paranoid but one of the classic things was her being so up and down, playing one minute and looking almost depressed the next. She seemed a bit like that last night but seems as mad as a box of frogs so far this morning.
I guess only time will tell and over the weekend we will closely monitor her.
Whatever is is/was so are so glad to have her home :D

'more Mum' sounds like a typical cocker :D so glad she's back home Maddy.
I've logged on this morning to see if you'd posted an update. As you say, you know Wilsy better than anyone - it's just going to be a waiting game but I really hope she's on the mend from a tummy bug and just feeling a bit tired occasionally - I know they wipe me out.
:bigarmhug: to you all,
Jayne and Pearl
xx

Fingers & Paws crossed it was just a bug. I think we can all seem paranoid, it's not a bad thing IMO, you know Willow better than anybody, she's lucky to have such a caring mum
-
Glad to hear that she's home, hopefully she's just exhausted from her time at the vets along with whatever was making her ill. She's obviously remembered what hurt and is taking it slowly, in between doing the usual mad cocker thing :lol2:
Hope she continues to improve :luv:
-
Glad she's home.
Hope she has a good day to day and continues to improve
-
I so, so hope all will be well for Willow. It has been a terrible time for you all.
Got everything crossed that she gets over this hurdle, and that you have your little girl back to good health again soon.
Sending BIG positive, healing vibes. Xxxx

She is still more tired than usual and has the occasional bit of random panting!! But her poops are almost back to normal.... ;) and she has even been throwing herself around the lounge today in a wall of death kinda way :005:
Ive added two lovely (well I think so) photos of her that I took last week with her new toy that her Gramps treated her to at Crufts :luv: :luv:
