Just wondered how common it was among Cocker breeders, as I haven't heard of many being done. Am going to use my youngest at stud so hes being hipscored at a year but am feeling in the minority!
-
Don't think it is very common - here's a list under 'health screen results' (not sure how comprehensive it is), showing hip scored working cockers: http://m.workingcockerhealthscreendirectory.com/site/mobile?dm_path=%2Findex.htm&fw_sig_site=38140735&fw_sig_is_admin=0&fw_sig_access_token=09f62081b296c2756c96c4630f077ca9a634ac9f&fw_sig=cfb7a62711a81eb5a60578297addf583&fw_sig_permissions=none&fw_sig_social=1&fw_sig_premium=1&fw_sig_potential_abuse=1&fw_sig_permission_level=0&fw_sig_time=1363100035082&fw_sig_url=http://www.workingcockerhealthscreendirectory.com/&fw_sig_api_key=522b0eedffc137c934fc7268582d53a1&fw_sig_session_key=b53892a23349c97dd45af4514653e2575fa5c724a28407d864ca800dd9ffdadb-38140735&fw_sig_tier=0&fb_sig_network=fw#2200
Most of the dogs are from Sweden and Norway!

It should be more common as joint problems are increasingly prevalent with working cockers :shades:
Emilyoliver - I don't think that directory is comprehensive at all as the site has to 'receive' the information and only a small proportion of working cocker breeders/owners use that site anyway.
-
Having a dog with hip dysplasia I'm really pleased to see that you're going to have your boy hip scored, I appreciate that a low/even score doesn't guarantee that his off spring won't develop HD, but am sure it all helps. From reading threads from working cocker breeders, it seems more of them are starting to hip score

Yes, that's what I thought, but don't know whether there is a register of scored dogs elsewhere?

You can request a list of all hip scored Cockers from the KC - you will have to pay a fee, not sure how much as it's been a while since I ordered something like this. The form for requesting this info is the last one on this page (you'll need to ring first to find out how much): http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/488
We've been hip scoring for a few years now - it is becoming more common than it used to be and is a Recommended test for KC Assured Breeders (although sadly many ABS breeders just do the required tests and ignore the recommended ones). We wouldn't use a stud dog who hasn't been hip scored now - it's clear from just those dogs that have been scored (show & working) that we have a range of scores in the breed from very good to pretty awful ph34r

I am very nervous about the result, especially as hes been airborne since 8 weeks! I'm sure constantly bouncing 5ft in the air hasn't helped, but I wouldn't use him unless I knew he was ok, I couldn't stand it if one of his pups developed a problem later on. He's being seen by a chiro tomorrow for a routine seeing to, I will be interested to know what he finds! ph34r

Yes it's always quite nerve wracking, specially as you often have to wait a few weeks to get the results, depending on when the BVA panel sits to do the scoring. Always better to know than not know though & hopefully the score will be good and you can relax knowing you have done all you can to ensure you are offering a healthy dog at stud :shades:

My vet is great, when I had my last one done, she was able to tell me it would be ok, and that one side would be higher than the other, and she spot on. Of course he then turned out to be sterile! >:(

But he's a stunning looking sterile boy tho Claire ;) Hopefully cheeky boy Scout will get the ok and not suffer the same problem as his big bro...
-
He's my bootiful boy :)
Fingers crossed all goes ok with Monster Mash.

We're getting Stan hip scored in 7 weeks time (yes I know it's a long way off) but I'm nervous already ph34r
-
Will probably be about the same time then Sharon, we can hold each others hand lol
-
Got two of my girls being hip scored in a couple of weeks, all other tests clear so I hope their hips are good too.
-
Hes all booked in for the 1st May, which sadly for him is also his 1st birthday! But it was the only day the vet I wanted to do it and me getting the day off work coincided.
-
6th May Stan is booked in, also his first birthday!
-
Aren't we mean! :005:
-
Results came back today. 3/8 (11).
Just Goni to do and he's all done. As is my bank account!
-
We only had Stan done last Thursday, as my mum passed away so everything got put on hold, so now we have the wait.
-
:016: Sorry to hear about your mum Sharon.
-
Thank you :'(
It's 3 weeks tomorrow since the hip xrays were sent away, how long did yours take before you got the results?
-
2.5 weeks so yours should be here soon.
-
Just wondering is a score of say 6/6 better than 2/10 or the same? Or do you just add them together?
-
Stan's hip scores are back, and very happy to say he's 3:4 :D
-
Is a hip score of 5/6 ok ?
-
Is a hip score of 5/6 ok ?
It's not a bad score - it's just below the breed mean score which is 13 (although BVA advice is to choose breeding stock with scores well below the breed mean score)

Thanks Jane. ;)
