Do you know whether he's sired any liver roans before?  As blue is dominant over liver, both sire and dam have to carry the liver gene. If either parent doesn't carry the gene, then no liver roans will be produced. Hope that makes sense?

Yes he has sired litters with girls that do not carry the liver roan but this one does x

Without DNA testing, you've got no way of knowing whether he produces liver if this is the first time he has mated a bitch carrying the liver gene - he may carry liver or he may not. Luck of the draw really ;)

Yes it's possible but there's no guarantee. The only way to know for sure in advance of a litter is to DNA test the stud dog for the liver gene eg http://www.laboklin.co.uk/laboklin/CoatColours.jsp?catID=DogsCC

I have just been told by the breeder that they are infact both dna colour tested and both carry the liver gene so with a red roan mum and blue roan dad would there be a chance for liver even though neither parent actually is liver? :D

Yes if both parents are carriers of the liver gene, then 25% of the litter could be liver based on the normal rules of inheritance

Hi, my gorgeous liver roan Rowan was born to a stunning black and white mother (still to this day the most beautiful cocker I've ever seen - even above Rowan  ph34r) and a blue roan father, an established well known stud). Of a litter of 6, there were 2liver roan with tan, 1 liver roan and 3 blue roan. All were cracking looking pups. Rowan has the double liver gene which means she has the pinky/brown nose and pads not black. She's beautiful and elegant and the nicest temperament imaginable - despite her breeder saying the livers have traditionally been the challenges of her litters  :005:
