Title: How old is too old for a stud dog?
Post by: Claire_H on May 09, 2013, 07:18:15 AM
Hi, just wondered if there a maximum age limit for a stud dog?  Does age affect fertility and if so at what age should a dog stop being a stud or does this not really apply?

There is no set maximum age limit for a stud dog. Fertility can decrease with age but many stud dogs can carry on siring good-sized litters until middle age and beyond. Quite often experienced stud dog owners will test their dog's fertility from time to time as they age so they can check for any problems (which also provides reassurance to breeders who might want to use a particular dog)
