Hi all can anyone tell me how a roan manifests itself?
Is the colouring/pattern already there or does it grow in (sorry if this sound silly) Shadow was black and white not a roan so I dont know.
Leo seems at the moment to be mostly a solid colour with few white bits on his chest and one white spot on his head, he has white coming trough his toes and a white tip on his tail.
I looked at some pictures of orange roan and seems Leo not resembling at the moment
Any Ideas?
Thanks

I only have experience of blue roans, but they generally get darker as they age! (mine certainly did - when we first saw him we worried he wasn't going to be dark enough, and now he's very dark, although some of that puppy fluff has now gone and some silver is showing!).
If Leo is mainly orange now I suspect he'll stay that way. He's adorable, by the way - haven't been on here much recently, so have only just seen the photos. Congrats on your new addition!

I can only go on Brodie, who is a liver roan. She had a LOT of white on her as a pup, but gradually grew darker in her first year and is now brown with very little white. When she is clipped you can still see her original pattern.

Looking at the photos he's not a roan, he's a solid golden with some white markings (solids can have white on their noses, chests, paws etc.; usually from mixing solid/particolour breeding). Roans/tickeds get darker as they get older and the coat pattern comes through, orange roans are usually born mostly white. Did the breeder tell you he was an orange roan?

I think the same as Nicola, that he's a gold with some white markings. What colours were his parents?

Agree with the others. Archie was almost white when I first saw him. The large orange patches remain constant but the white bits gradually get much more speckly as they get older. The more speckly they get, the darker they appear to be.

Yes thats what I was thinking more solid than roan.
His mum was golden solid and dad orange roan the rest of the litter where much lighter virtually white, I picked Leo because he was darker (I always loved golden solids) look like i got one ha ha, His nose and chest have few roan looking markings I think.
I love him :luv: looking at other roans puppies I thought he obv got mums solid genes more so but he definitely seems orange not golden he seems to get more orangey by the day

any roan is born as a solid colour with white the roan comes gradually as the puppy ages some have a lot of solid patches some only a few some have heavy roan some have light :)

Orange roans look orange & white for weeks, months, and gradually the roan starts coming through. I agree your little one looks like a solid gold with white patches, was one parent solid the other roan?
