Daisy who is 7 years old has suffered two bouts of pancreatitis and she is currently being fed Eukanuba Intestinal kibble.
I was interested in Naturediet products and messaged them about their recommended diet for a dog that has suffered with pancreatitis. This is their reply:-
We recommend for dogs that suffer with Pancreatitis that you use Naturediet Senior/Lite. This is a reduced fat recipe that will satisfy the appetite and is extremely palatable . This blend of Rabbit & Turkey with vegetables and rice contains a broad spectrum of amino acids, essential for muscle maintenance and repair and the rice provides additional slow release energy. The crude oils and fats in the Naturediet Senior/Lite is 5%
We also have a Naturediet Fish recipe that is very low in fat and could also be suitable. The Crude oils and fat in The Naturediet Fish are 2%.
My understanding is the lower the fat % content, the better it is for her. So why do they specifically recommend the Senior/Lite and not the Fish variety, I am confused
I have also emailed them back with this question, so I await their reply. I just wondered if anyone else had already been down this route and has any advice?
Thanks in advance ;)

You're right, that does seem odd. I would think the lower fat fish variety would be a better bet too. It will be interesting to see what their reply is.

I'm not sure why they recommend it that way, but Brodie went onto the NatureDiet senior/lite after her enzyme levels went back to normal and has never had a problem since. She was put on the Royal Canin (1.7% fat) during the weeks after her bout, but I didn't want to keep her on it as I don't like the ingredients...
I didn't spot the fish was so low in fat until some months after - I've tried her on it but her stomach isn't keen on it. I'm hoping if she ever has another bout she will be able to tolerate it rather than the RC again.
I think while they are recovering then the lower the fat levels the better, but any recommendation I've seen has said 5% fat or less should be fine for preventing another bout.
Also very interested in their reply xx

Thank you for the replies :D
Good to hear that Brodie is fine on the Senior/Lite variety JennyBee and interesting to hear about her stomach not being keen on the Fish variety. I have been working on the 5% rule too for the last couple of years too. Originally she was on Hills from the Vet, then I started to feed her Chappie, but unfortunately she had another episode of pancreatitis, so I then put her on the Eukanuba Intestinal which she has been on since.
I will post their reply when I receive it ;)

It's not just the fish, unfortunately - she's been left with a very sensitive stomach since her pancreatitis bout and can't seem to handle any other food or treats than the ones she is on just now, poor girl. Chappie didn't agree with her either, and that was before she fell ill!

Just received the response from Naturediet customer services:-
The Naturediet Fish is low in fat can make your dog lose weight so we recommend if your dog is at an ideal weight using Naturediet Senior/Lite to maintain this. Both will be suitable for a dog with Pancreatitis.
So now I am able to make a better judgement on which variety to feed.
JennyBee - can I ask, how much Naturediet do you feed Brodie a day?
-
That makes sense! She gets three quarters of a tray a day, sometimes a little more if she's still hungry in the evening. It's less than the recommended amount, but she would gain an awful amount of weight if I fed her that :P

Oh yes indeedy, I have found too that Naturediet are rather generous with their 'daily amounts'.

Thank you both for the guidance, it will help me when I start feeding my two Naturediet ;) I've still got a 12kg bag of Eukanuba to get through, but have ordered some Naturediet Fish as I would like them both to lose a little weight, not much, but just want to keep it in check :shades:

I usually get mine from Zooplus - it's an excellent service (and Brodie ADORES the Rocco chicken strips - I will put a link in for them - low fat so hopefully they'll be ok for Daisy if/when she is allowed low fat chews) except when the last order arrived my box of NatureDiet was seriously, seriously off >:D. Don't know what happened (and don't think it was Zooplus' fault), but the smell was like nothing I've ever smelled in my life :lol2:. First time in a few years I've had that happen, and they refunded straight away ;). It's a very good service, though!

Check out the reviews, I don't know why, but dogs find them addictive :005:
