Hey guys, just after a rough guide as to how much i should be feeding Ella?
he mentioned 100grams once a day ?
shes weighing in at 13.5kg and the vet says she should be near to the 11.5kg mark, we currently feed her on wainwrights biscuits and also the wet food and we use the wet food as a kind of mixer, i will put up some pictures later on so that people can see Ella, pretty gutted that he said that to be honest :'( :'(
-
when we took Gemma last year she weighed 10kg, our vet said he would like her to be about 8kg (she is rather small) . I went out and brought some cup measures and she has a 1/2 cup measure twice a day. This size holds about 60g of Skinners. As we were now in control of her portions (both of can give the same amount) she has lost the weight and as maintaining it.
-
Blimey 100grm once a day..
my Ellie would be a starver on that!
hey don't be too gutted there is stuff
you can do to help, feeding veggies
and maybe fruits to fill her up and some more
moving should do the trick , chasing a ball,
chasing you :005: extra walks (brisk walks)#
same as for us really ;)
and remember it's better you have the heads-up
and can start to do something about it before
it's a major problem.
eta Min is right, weighing your stuff is good
to do too.
-
il get a picture up later of Ella and see what you think, he said she doesn't "nip" in at the back
she has 2 walks a day, and we are going to start using scales, we just used to do half a cup and a little bit of forthglade wet mixer and that was twice a day
-
wow 100g a day ! of what, Riley is on nearer 200g plus bits inbetween, he is 14.5kg and when last at the vet in may last year was 13.5kg, vet never mentioned it. Good job as I wouldnt have listened to him.
Its not just about what the scales say, its about how the dog looks etc, please post a photo from the side and above so we can see it.
-
Blue is 12.5kg and has 200g per day but has nothing else as he's on a special urinary diet.
His weight stays about the same and he looks just about right.
I check his weight monthly but I usually go by how he looks.
100 g seems a bit on the low side
-
I have never weighed the girls food. If they look good with feelable ribs then I leave things alone, if they start to look portly I cut their food down slightly. Don't get too hung up on what the vet says. X
-
Charlie weighs significantly more than the 'standard'. I posted photos on here and everyone said he looked fine (I thought he looked ok). He's not got fat on him, he is solid but he's all muscle.
If you think she looks and feels ok I wouldn't worry too much :)

Pearl is around 13Kg and should be closer to 12.5Kg - she's on 140gm Skinners Salmon and Rice but will be going back on the museli soon (120gm) split over 2 meals a day. I've always weighed her food from the day she came home - the extra weight is all the gravy bones "awarded for good behaviour" when my neighbours look after her :005: funny how she always loses weight on holiday ;)
-
Jinley is just over 13kg and looking a bit portly. Its a case of calories in against energy out (as my Doctor keeps telling me :shades: ph34r). Since I have had this dreaded flu I havent had the energy to walk her twice a day and like Jayne's Pearl, she has a couple of biscuits during the day, usually at bed-time. There are days that she doesnt bother eating anything other than a couple of gravy bones, so will just have to increase her exercise levels.
But 100g does seem a little low for daily food.

We have just fed Ella again and Roughly she has 100grams twice a day, so is it a case of reducing further?
And what veg can people suggest? So we can add some more to her diet or as treats, I'll upload a photo in a bit

Most veg you can add, green beans, peas, carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash etc, well these are all what riley has, not all at once though ;)

The vet today said she should be on 100gs a day( never mentioned anything before )
But we have been told so many different amounts I wanted to weigh how much we are feeding roughly SNF see peoples opinions/advice
-
if mine I would drop her to 150gm per day and see how she goes,

It would be worth contacting the manufacturer of the brand of foods you have Ella on - they should advise the weight of food for a dog at 10Kg (often) the multiply it up to a dog at 11.5Kg but please bear in mind that it is in their interest to tell you more than Ella will actually need as I'm sure their "diet" food is sold at a premium ;)
It is all relative tho - as Pat says calories out greater than calories in is what it really counts - Pearl was unwell before Christmas and I've also had flu since so her usual exercise level is reduced. With that in mind I've been taking her to hydrotherapy to help with her fitness level - as a by product she has really toned up as well - just as we would :005:
-
You could trying reducing her food to 75g twice a day to start with and adding any sort of vegetables to bulk it up cabbage, broccoli, green beans, carrots anything really. Try giving raw carrots for treats, they're good for her teeth as well.
If her weight doesn't start to go down reduce her food say to 60g and add the vegetables. You should eventually find an amount that will give you the weight that she looks best on.
If she is fairly small then 13.5kg may be a bit on the heavy side, one of our girls was only 11kg another was 12.5kg and one of the boys was 14kg. So they do vary quite a lot depending on their build.

Sorry folks but I do think going from 200gm a day to 150gm is a massive drop and poor Ella will be ravenous :dunno: perhaps a more controlled approach would be to reduce one meal a day by 10gm for a week, then the second meal too for another week until she is down to 150gm a day. Also let her have whole, raw, veg to chew on a) to bulk up her food and b) dogs can't really digest veg so most of it just passes through but will help with her hunger.
Also, cut out any human food, tit-bits and other treats - if she was having any ;)
Note to self ph34r

Thanks for the replies! I'll be adding a picture in a bit :)
-
I would like to see the pics. You might not need to do anything drastic. Kali is 12.5kg and perfect....Lyla is 9kg and just starting to look a bit puddingy ph34r There is no one ideal weight. Post a photo and lets see

Does your vet know what food she is on? I would be surprised if he knows the recommended amounts for every food so it sounds like he may have picked a figure out of thin air!
If you are mixing wet and dry I think it is quite important to weigh it, especially if both are complete foods. It is easy to accidentally over feed when combining. Forthglade make two versions, one is complete and one is intended as a complimentary wet mixer so it might be worth trying that one if you aren't already.
I don't know about the dry Wainwrights but I feed the wet trays and they changed their recommended amounts last year. They almost doubled them. :o I stuck to what I was feeding with no ill effects. Archie is just under 17kg and only has two thirds of a tray a day. It looks very little but it is good quality food so less is needed. He also has quite a few treats and a chew in the evening.
You could also look at lower fat versions of the wet food. Forthglade do a lower fat fish variety, Wainwrights also have a lite version and fishmongers trays are also very low fat. If I think Archie is looking a little round I give him those two or three times a week for a while!

Sorry on my phone not as easy as the PC :(
-
She does look to have a slight waist going on there! How much of that is fur? If you feel along her sides using slight pressure, can you feel her ribs?
-
Meant to say she certainly doesn't look like you should be making any major food changes!
-
Yeh you can feel her ribs, just I'd say
Furry little thing !
-
If it were me and I could feel her ribs with slight pressure, I wouldn't be doing anything. If you want her to lose a wee bit more then just drop her food slightly. She certainly doesn't look to be needing her food dropping by much x
-
Thanks feel better now people can see her :)
-
I think Ella looks just right. She is gorgeous and I wouldn't be cutting her food.
-
If she was mine I'd probably have a bit off her (although it's hard to tell with the fur!) but nothing drastic. Certainly don't think she needs her food halved!
She's very pretty :)
-
We are going to take say 10grams off and see what that does, with regards to the veg do i weigh that? Or say hand full?
-
Looking at your photo she doesn't look that overweight to me  She's a lovely girl and doesn't look on the small size. I'd be happy with her looking like that.
I wouldn't cut her food down too much, a hand full of veg should be about right. Check her weight weekly if you want to see how things are going.
-
Our vets receptionists told us Meg was overweight, she is of a similar build to Ella. She weighed 12.75kg and was only fed 130gms of the recommended 180gms as we are treat training. Following advice on here we now feed her the recommended 180gms, using part of it to train and she gets a raw carrot every day. We got her weighed today and she has gone down to 12.20kg. Clearly we were giving her way too many treats. She gets a 45 minute off lead, ball chasing walk and a 45 minute lead walk every day, hope we can maintain this weight now :D btw she is fed on purina pro plan.
-
she doesnt look as though she is carrying to much weight :luv:
-
thanks a lot ! we will cut down a little, i appreciate everyones reply, first thing i said was " RIGHT I AM GOING ON THE COCKERS FORUM!!!!" see what they say :D
-
The weight and which food is a big concern Penny's food is 2 stars but I add a small amount of Natures Diet oR fish chicken ect veg and healthy treats Her weight averages about 12kg exercise is not a a long as usual but she has a fit swim once a week and Penny likes to dawdle Am thinking of changing her food to 5 star one with her added extras Her coat and poohs are fine but I do worry about her kibbleSory I meant to add she looks fine very similar to Penny Lovelly golden girl
-
If she were mine, I would drop her food a bit. I would say she is a tad overweight but not anything to be concerned about now. You should be able to feel her ribs easily but I certainly don't think you need to halve her intake. 170g a day would probably do the trick and would make sure Ella doesn't get any bigger, which she probably would do if you continued with the 200g a day.
-
Update:
Got Ella some Veg the broccoli, carrots and sweet corn went down a treat
-
She doesnt look overweight to me (I think Jinley is slightly larger and she is having her treats cut down). I am not overly worried though, as once spring is here and the holiday season and lighter nights start, she will be more active.
If you compare show cockers to workers, then show always look more portly and have a less defined waist. I think she looks lovely. :luv:
-
She looks just right to me - my 2 workers each weigh about 13.5kg. She is a beautiful girl :luv:
-
Thanks for the replies and kind words, I've told Ella your comments :) I agree soon as its lighter nights the weight will drop off, a lot more garden time

Jacob has recently been looking chunky so his food has been reduced from 120g a day to 100g a day. It will depend on what food you give as to the amount the dog should be fed. Jacob is on Barking Heads Fusspot and he only needs to look at the food to put weight on :lol2: he now has 40g for breakfast about 7am, a bonio at lunchtime, 60g for dinner with a large portion of veg (green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and just a couple of carrots due to the sugar levels in them) and then a small biscuit at 7pm. Out of all of my dogs, Jacob is given the smallest amount of food, but weighs the most. If I don't give him any veg then he is a nightmare with poo-eating but as long as I fill him up, he is generally okay.
