Title: Puppy Sick!
Post by: Charlie Pup on March 13, 2014, 09:47:22 PM
I have recently moved Charlie from JWB puppy food to JWB adult food, he's is 6 1/2 months.  The reason we didn't persevere with junior was because I was told the adult had less protein and would help to calm his endless excitement!

At the same time I have also given Charlie his first nylabone, which he loves!

For the past three evenings, tonight included, Charlie has been sick 2-3 hours after his last meal of the day. His afternoon poos are also of the runny variety! I am going to pop him to the vets tomorrow but I'm wondering if it could be the adult food or if nylabone's are not the best thing.

Never used nylabones personally but I have heard a lot about them causing dicky tummies in pups x

That what I was wondering, always seems to coincide with final chew of evening, he's not bitten any off but maybe it's an irritant on his delicate tum

Perhaps its that and the new food in combination, overwhelmed his tummy a bit?

Nylabone will be removed when he goes to bed tonight so we can start afresh tomorrow.  Cows ears also make him sick, what can I try for him to chew on besides his stag antler?

Hudson has pizzle sticks and cow hooves, which both go down fine with him. He had colitis when he was tiny so I'm always careful what I give him. He also likes a whole carrot to chomp on but they don't last so long!

Charlie has frozen carrots too, they are gone in less than a minute! My local pet supplies does stock cows hooves, I'll pick one up tomorrow and see how he takes to it :)

Do you think it may be the frozen carrot - if it is eaten frozen, that may have an effect on his still young tum?

Thankfully no, he only has half at a time and we originally gave them to him when he was teething and he has always been fine on them. Also he's not had one for the last few nights.

I have heard JWB adult food doesn't always agree with tums so may try him on burns or something similar.

Hudson is also on JWB - he has the junior though, we changed straight over from puppy to junior without any problems. See what the vet says but I reckon its probably the nylabones and hopefully cutting them out will settle him down. I wouldn't change his food until his tummy is back to normal.

Archie never had a solid poo on JWB. They were vaguely formed in the morning but always totally runny in the afternoon. They were never solid. I've heard other dogs have had a similar problem on it. Not all foods suit all dogs so it may be worth trying something else.

Definitely think it's his food, ate his breakfast fine but as soon as he was given his kibble in his treat ball for dinner he was sick.  His nylabone was taken away last night so he has not had it today.

Aw.. today was the first day of his new training regime after we had a session yesterday with a new trainer.  Not much hope of that without kibble!!

Vet appointment for late afternoon

Maybe the adult formula is too rich for him? Poor boy. Good luck at vets xx

Less protein doesnt mean at all that it will call a dog down, quite the opposite sometimes , if  a dog is eating a food with a lot of cereals, fillers , rubbish etc it will have the opposite effect.
JWB has rice as its main ingredient.

We were on JWB and Riley was fine, but we changed to eden and he has thrived on this for a year. Its a higher protein of the good variety.

Interesting.... I've read about Eden recently, I'd never heard of it before.  Is it only available on-line?

I have got to admit that my two were on JWB and did really well on it, until they went onto the adult variety  >:( then runny poos. So I changed them on to the natural dog food, and now they are both fine  ;) x x x

There are some retailers all over the country, but the online service is second to none.
I get my 15kg which is £53.99 within 2-3 days, lasts me 3 months.

Just back from the vets, she thinks it may be the food as he's always had a sensitive tummy, however he is also feeling a bit bloated, although clearly not in any pain.

The vet has given him an anti-sickness injection which was very stingy and he didn't like, some antibiotics and some zitac as antacid.  He's also got a bit of conjunctivitis so he has cream for that too   :(

We have popped him on the Royal canin sensitive food for a few days and he is back in on Tuesday to check he's still not bloated at all, if he is we may have to send him for an x-ray to make sure he hasn't eaten anything he shouldn't have.

When we go back we are going to talk about changing his diet as clearly this one doesn't agree with him.

You would not have known anything was wrong with the loon though, he just thinks the vets is a big playground, its an absolute nightmare as he wants to play with every dog no matter where he is and just thinks every human wants to interact  >:D

Hope your get the little guy sorted soon. :luv:

Tummy upsets can be debilitating over time (even if it doesn't seem that way, at the moment ;) )

I think the majority of pups think that everyone is their friend, who cannot wait to give them a fuss & cuddles  :lol2: It can be a blessing (as in they are not afraid) but a pain if you're trying to keep their concentration on you  ph34r

Think it's good he likes the vet though. :D

Milly had exactly the same problem when moving from JWB puppy to the adult version.

After a chat with our vet we put her on the puppy version of Orijen for a month and then moved her to the adult version.

She's been on Acana and Orijen adult for the past two years with no further problems and we now have Chaz, our worker, on an Acana/Orijen mix as well. Great for their coats and absolutely boootiful poos  :005:.

Thank you, I haven't been happy with his coat for a while, I know he's a working cocker but he's quite dandruffy and sometimes dull, although greasy, if that makes sense.

Again I've not heard of this food but I can research and take findings to our vet, who I have to say is absolutely brilliant.

do you give it a brush every so often (I mean like a bristle type brush (not too hard though) to stimulate the skin cells) - this can help the skin - I was advised this by a vet re some foster pups I had who had dandruffy skin like this

I do brush him every other day, more so that he can get used to being brushed! I do think it is all diet related, if my diet is poor my hair and skin is a bit lackluster so I would imagine / hope the same.

He's not been sick since his injection yesterday, hoping the medication will sort his irritated tum and we can go from there 😊
