Title: What age did you leave your pup in kennels?
Post by: Gem01 on April 02, 2014, 05:01:06 PM
Hi

Just wondering when people left their pup to go on hols? We're off to the lakes in July but taking jake with us. First year, we've not been abroad. Not sure when a pup is too young to leave at kennels.

I'd like to hear what others think

Thanks

Gemma

So long as they've had all their vaccinations with 2 weeks between last one and boarding, they are old enough to be kennelled. unless the kennels have an age restriction. Puppies adapt fine to kennels and usually get lots of attention from staff. My pup was kennelled last year for a week at about 19 weeks. He was fine.

Harvey first went to Kennels ( though not strictly kennels, as the lady takes them into her own home) when he was 4 months old, he absolutely adores going there and gets so excited when he sees her. I certainly feel  that starting when he was young was the best thing for him and me .

Archie is going into kennels for 2 nights for the first time in April, he'll be 9 months old.  My previous cocker was kennelled for the first time at the same age too but for 10 nights and he survived OK.

Blue went last month for the first time, first for a day visit then only for one night. He was 7 months. He was absolutely fine, and I'm really glad we found a nice one and started him quite early on, so it just becomes a part of his life  :D

He should be fine in kennels - I've seen pups in kennels I use and there's never a problem - often its best to get them used to kennels as young as possible really

Bonnie was 5 months old when she went in for 10 days. She had 2 trials in the 2 weeks leading up to it; 1 night then 2 nights. Biggest problem was our worrying and feeling guilty. She was fine and soon got back into a routine. We won't worry this year because we know she was OK xx

I always worry and feel guilty too, even though I haven't got much choice at the minute, I'd go down the petsitting route but as Archie isn't 100% toilet trained, they've advised against this option for the moment.

The younger the better I would say.  Over the years I have kennelled at 4 months and 6 months.  I've never had a problem and puppies do tend to get lots of attention; at least in the establishments I have used in the UK and here in Malta.  I do short stays of say 3 days to begin with and make them quite frequent if you can.  My cavvies are currently in kennels whilst we have some workmen in - they couldn't wait to get out of the car when we arrived so I try not to worry about them as they are in good hands. Good luck and enjoy your holiday.   :shades:

Mine went into kennels quite early on, not long after they'd had then final vaccinations - initially just for a morning, for a couple of times, then for a day - I built it up gradually and I was quite lucky as I had very understanding kennels, plus as they were puppies they had loads of attention. They've never been in kennels for more than 3/4 days, and we haven't used kennels for about 4 years now as I have a dog walker who will look after the dogs for me and stay at my house if necessary.  :D

15 weeks, :021: the holiday was already booked before we decided to have another dog and I had already asked the breeder to have her for an extra week due to a holiday that was also already booked.   She got on fine, the staff "doted" on her, she even spent a lot of time in their home.   4 years later she still loves going to them. ;)

Thanks all. The lady who does the obedience training is going to recommend some kennels and also the breeder has offered to have him.
I live in the north east and the fog we've been having over the past week has made me think I can't live without my warm sunny holiday!
 ;)

I can't help with your question, Charlie hasn't been in kennels. But we've got a walk organised for Easter Monday to Seaton sluice if you fancy it?

Where abouts are you located?

We are also going to the lakes this July, well end of June for us...seems like it's the place to be this summer  ph34r.
