Title: Raised feeding bowls
Post by: SAM -BOB on April 14, 2014, 07:04:51 PM
Sam recently diagnosed with arthritis so trying to think of different ways to make life a little easier for him and one of the things I have been thinking about is getting him a raised feeding bowl, just asking if anyone has any recommendations?

I Bought a couple of "Spaniel bowls" for Gwen from Pet and Farm Place...

http://www.farmandpetplace.co.uk/products/pet/dog/dog-feeders/bowls/page-1.html

The first one in this section... it is possible to pop a stainless bowl into the top, and if not high enough, it would be relatively easy to make a wooden plinth to raise it higher/// or two of them on a "box" structure ?
They are 12cm high, the bowl is 8cm deep, and the inner diameter of the top is 11cm

Gwen gets on well with hers and her ears although shorter, and don't flop over the sides out of the way, but do dip into a standard bowl,  keep out of her water and food

For Dylan I use a children's plastic step and put his bowl on the top. He doesn't have joint problems but he is an oldie at nearly thirteen.

I started looking at them a while ago with a view to getting one for William, who has damaged discs in the lumbosacral area. You can buy them in Argos but I wanted to actually look at some to see how high they are, so waited until I went to Crufts. Big disappointment, as I only saw a couple and didn't think much of them.

This article http://dogcare.dailypuppy.com/pick-height-elevated-dog-feeder-3329.html advises how to measure the correct height. I'm not sure that it's necessary to be that precise so at the moment I'm trying makeshift things of various heights, like folded dog towels stacked up, a low step stool or a small cardboard box to see if William appears more comfortable at a particular height.

The other problem I might have with a commercially bought one is that I won't use plastic bowls for the dogs. I prefer stainless steel or ceramic, so that might limit my choice.

I use stainless bowls in mine Elaine, though I have to keep an eye on the water bowl as only just over half a pint (quarter of a litre) capacity... it would take a larger stainless "insert" bowl, but then of course, the top is becoming wider which defeats the object.

There is a Pet and Farm store at Abergele which is only five miles along the coast from me... so was able to check them out... Gwen is able to check out the treats she likes before we buy them loose as well... :)
