Title: Plant food query
Post by: Ben's mum on April 19, 2014, 08:50:29 PM
Just wondered if any of you have any knowledge about health impact of something called Vitax  which is a plant food.  I used it for the first time today and both dogs went crazy to get at the box which was weird, but then they can be sometimes  ;) I dug it in to a small bed and Ben was trying to eat it, so I put him in the house, and he didn't get any. I have just gone out to see Harry digging the soil looking for some. It is really tiny pellets and well mixed into the soil now, so he would not have been able to find much if any.  But I wondered if he did find some would it harm him. I have looked at their website which is quite vague  :dunno:

I won't use it agin, just in case but wondered if anyone has had similar problems and if it is eaten would it do any harm?

I once bought a garden fertiliser that included pelleted chicken manure and my old Cocker Josh was desperate to eat it and kept trying to dig it up. I had to stop using it in the back garden and just use it in the front where he couldn't get to it. I wonder if that's what in Vitax?

Does their website have any warnings about the products? Sometimes even if they don't list exact ingredients they will have warnings for things that might irritate the skin if touched or cause a problem if eaten.

Had a read of their 'SAfety information sheet' and it really doesn't mention dogs at all - but given that this is what it advises for humans - Ingestion – rinse out mouth with plenty of water and seek medical aid immediately.  and also

TOXICOLOGICAL Based on product components, ingestion of large quantities may cause abdominal
pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

To the best of our knowledge physical, chemical and toxicological properties have
not been fully investigated.

I would not have thought it would be very good if ingested by dogs either. Tho it does say large quantities!!

Thanks for your help, it looks like it would gave to be eaten in large quantities to do any harm, and it is well dug in so they are lucky to find a tiny pellet, but in their looking they are digging up the border! I will revert to growmore which they show no interest in.
