Title: Anal Gland Cancerous Tumour - little update :)
Post by: Ellie on May 17, 2014, 06:38:47 AM
I took Daisy to the vet yesterday as she seemed in discomfort to have her anal glands looked at and the vet said she has a tumour in one gland that is most likely cancerous.  They are doing an operation on Monday morning to remove it.  The vet is optimistic that it can all be removed and Daisy will be fine.  But I'm still really worried.

Once the sedation and pain relief wore off Daisy was in pain again.  We've both been awake most of the night with me having to stroke her to stop her crying.  We're both exhausted!

Poor Daisy :'(

Will you be able to get some pain relief from the vet to help over the weekend? I hope it all goes well on Monday and that the surgery is a complete success :bigarmhug:

I wouldn't hesitate to ask the vet for pain relief for her. It's a long time to be in pain if her op is on Monday x

Very sorry to hear this, I hope everything goes well with the op. Your vet sounds very optimistic and it does sound like they've caught it early. I have everything crossed for Monday :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

poor Daisy, Ozzy had exactly the same op 16 months ago, although the small lump did turn out to be cancerous the vet and the lab were sure it was contained in the glad which was removed.

He was in a lot of pain for a few days even though he was on Metacam and Tramadol and he kept trying to rub his bottom on the floor.  I also had a few sleepness nights but he is absolutely fine now.

I hope the result is negative but like Ozzy sounds as though they have caught it early.

Best wishes to you and Daisy

So sorry to hear this. What a worrying time for you. My last cocker had anal glad cancer (sadly untreatable) and he was in a lot of pain from just the biopsy so I agree that a call to the vet for more pain relief would be a good idea. It definitely sounds like it has been caught early and your vet sounds optimistic which is great so try not to worry. I'll be thinking of you both on Monday and sending. Healing thoughts to Daisy.  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Thanks so much for well wishes for Daisy  :D. They gave her pain relief yesterday and sent me home with antibiotics and pain relief/anti inflams to last til Monday.  The investigations they dd on her yesterday were very painful so when the sedation wore off she was in great discomfort.  I did find myself downstairs at 3am reading the pain relief leaflet, desperate to give her some, but the instructions are for her to have it every 24 hours so I thought I'd better stick to it.

She's been a little better today, but still crying and clingy.  I rang the vet and she said that was to be expected and I must wait til pm to give her the next dose of painkiller.  She's had that dose and is now asleep in her bed  :luv:

She had her anal glands emptied at the vet in November so they say the tumour must have grown since then, so they are optimistic they should have caught it in time and they will just remove the whole gland.

I'm only insured up to £500 per condition, with a £99 excess.  I dread to think what this is going to cost?

Pearls op in December to remove both glands was £259 including a post op check.  It seemed very reasonable given the Vet is a partner in the practice and she was on a drip during the procedure.  Hopefully your insurance will be plenty to cover the operation on Monday x

Just a little update :) Daisy had her stitches out yesterday and a check up.  It turns out that the type of tumour she had was a plasmacytolma, according to the vet a tumour hasn't been seen in that area before so they double tested it to be sure before discussing it with me.

Apparently it is unlikely to spread, but it could reoccur so the vet wants to see her in a month to check her over and then see her every 3 months to do her bloods to make sure there is no reoccurance.

So, fingers crossed, all's well that ends well.  What a relief, I've been soooo worried!
