Title: puppy coat
Post by: tracyg on October 26, 2015, 06:56:51 AM
Hi I have a 6 moth old blue roan show cocker and although his coat has grown a bit it doesn't seem to be as long as all the others I have seen on here just wondered why thanks

All puppies are different much like humans, they develop at different rates. We met another cocker at training the same age as ours and the difference was amazing. It is nothing to worry about and I am sure that you will notice differences soon enough.

Stan looks beautiful and his coat looks excellent. You may expect the coat to enter a rather untidy stage before the puppy coat comes out, but if you want him to retain a nice flat coat resist any temptation to have him clipped. Brushing, combing, and maybe a little scissor trimming is the way to go. Once clipped the coat may change and grow back thicker and woollier which would then require regular clipping.

Stan looks lovely and silky smooth. Dylan at nearly five months looks like a motheaten boar piglet, his coat is in Stripes down his back, with a parting in the middle, can,t wait for it to start to loosen  :005:

Stan looks lovely, definitely not moody! Be grateful you don't have a mammoth like Pip!

Stan looks lovely, he has a fine silky coat, most at that age are woolly mammoths, Riley was for sure.

As others have said, they all get their adult coats at different ages. Some will have thicker 'hair' than others and will be able to have a longer coat; they are all different.

Also, his puppy coat will eventually grow long and silky. It'll be ready to come out when it's ready...

This was Charlie as a 5/6 month old puppy:

Here's a quick pic of Dylan to show his current coat.
(http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/lesleycrawford112/image.jpg1_zpsmnsuesop.jpg) (http://s614.photobucket.com/user/lesleycrawford112/media/image.jpg1_zpsmnsuesop.jpg.html)
At eight weeks he was white with black patches and a white blaze on his face, typical blue roan. He got, darker and darker until he was pratically black and I thought my lovely blue roan had disappeared  :-\. He's twenty weeks now, and white is beginning to reappear again. The black fur must be more vigorous than the white, it is longer. It,s growing at all sorts of weird angles and looks quite stripey, like a little wild board piglet. He has a distinct parting down his back, not sure if you can see it in the photo. He,s lost his whiskers, has only two now  :005:, and is teething, poor soul. It,s amazing how much the colour of his coat changed, you can see him at eight weeks in my intro post. I wonder how he will end up??????

He'll lighten up as his adult coat comes in, the black is thicker so they always look darker. Jane57s Riley when he was a pup went really dark, almost black, then lightened as his adult coat came in. She might have some photos to show you.

Willow is nearly 6 months and her coat has went from being quite straight to going curlier. She also casts quite a lot. Our previous 3 cockers didn't cast at all.

Emma is right, Riley was almost black when he was at the fluffy stage, ie about 6 months or so.
Heres a few of him.

Thanks Jane for posting the pics of the lovely Riley, it cheers me up!  :lol2: dylan was just like him at eight weeks, and is very similar at five months. His father looks like your boy. I think it may be that there is more black freckling throughout the coat. Milo was quite white, with well defined black patches, and he didn,t really change from puppy to adult, so I was quite surprised  that Dylan went so dark. But every day more white hairs are appearing, so I'm sure he'll be as beautifully roan as Riley.

They like to keep us guessing!

Jane, is your Riley by any chance a Miharu cocker? Dave thinks he recognises the sideboard in your first pic  :005: and he is very like Dylan. The photo looks just like a pup in the breeder,s previous litter. We got Dylan from Ayrshire, though they only moved there a year or so ago. We live near Arbroath, dave is from Stirling, I am english, but I love Scotland (apart from the weather >:( )

Ahhh, Dylan's mum is lynwater stock, so perhaps that accounts for the likeness. How interesting........

It's great seeing your pictures at various ages. As a new cocker owner, with my adorable blue roan girl it is fascinating to see how their coats change in colour and texture.
I am taking lots of pictures as she grows up.
Molly is my first cocker and I'm smitten - I couldn't wish for more in a dog.
