Title: Change in my 4 years old recall
Post by: Weewascal on January 09, 2016, 08:54:53 PM
Hi everyone, I've been a bit baffled by my dogs behaviour of late, he is now 4 years old and has been neutered since he was 18 months. Over the past few weeks he has been sniffing insesently, pee marking at every opportunity and his recall which has always been great isn't so great any more...

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Thanks.

Does sound as though he's a having a hormonal surge! Why not just get him checked out by the vet? In case there's some metabolic problem. If not then you'll know it's just behavioural and can start  back to basics recall training.  :-\

When you say 'of late' how long has his behaviour been different? And is it everywhere, or the same area in general? Could possibly be a bitch in season if recent behaviour and in the same area (such as your usual walking route).

My 11 year old castrated boy always knows if there's a bitch in season being walked where we go. He doesn't roam or follow the scent but he's far more aware of it, and mildly interested in it, than my 6 year old entire boy is :dunno:

There is a lot of unusual ground scent at the moment with the very mild weather, that and as others have said, the pr may be a bitch in season in your area.

It may also be worth having his ears checked.  Pearls recall has been a bit random in recent weeks, she was groomed on 2nd January, her ears were longer and much heavier than they normally arre and full of burrs and twigs from Boxing Day...... They had to be clipped  :'( but she worked beautifully to the whistle all day yesterday with brilliant recall attracting compliments

Millie is now 5 months and still hasn't got the idea. She know to go outside and if I could leave the back open then I would have no problems but she just won't hang on. If there is nobody there to let her out she will go inside after a very short wait.
