Title: Ear problem
Post by: Briggo09 on August 07, 2016, 11:52:13 AM
Hi guys,
Took Charlie out this morning and walked through a field area he enjoys. He only stays on the track with me and was off lead. The track is fairly overgrown in areas. All of a sudden he threw his head to the side and then ran to me and jumped on me in clear discomfort. Looked him all over and in his ear but couldn't see anything. Since he keeps shaking his head and rubbing one side on the floor. Have got him an appointment with vets at 3 but was just wondering if any1 has had something similar. Can ticks go right in the ear?

Humphrey got a grass seed in his a few weeks ago, while we were on holiday. Its quite common, i believe and does cause a good deal of discomfort. The vet removed it under sedation and he was fine afterwards. A visit to the vets is definatel the right thing to do!

Oh really.... At first I wondered if he had been stung by something but it's been a couple of hours now so am glad I got him booked in vets asap.

Take no chances and get a vet check, I hope he feels better soon.

Thank you, yeh I definitely won't take any chances- hate seeing him in any kind of discomfort.

Sounds like a grass seed but suppose it could be a sting.
The vet will be able to see right down the ear. Our previous cocker had a grass seed down her ear. We were lucky that the vet managed to remove it without sedation but it was a close thing. Hopefully your promt action will enable them to get out any offending seed. Let us know how you get on.

Hope the vet can find the offending seed.

And I don't think ticks get into the ear- they prefer the flaps where the blood is near the surface- usually high up on the head. Ugh!

Got to the vet and straight away after a quick look the diagnosis is a grass seed and he is now being sedated to have it removed  :-\
Poor little lad

Glad he's ok! They are small but left, can fester and become really nasty, at least you managed to deal with it early!! :D

The vet cut all the hair away inside the ear to try and avoid it- really won't enjoy taking him anywhere where grass seed is now- he is so dozey at min- actually weed himself laying on the floor bless him. Can't wait to have my bouncy mischievous Charlie back now.

So pleased that all is now ok, better a sleepy dog for the evening than one howling in pain for the night!

Have a similar problem with Millie. Ear rubbing both sides, esp left. Suspect the right side irritation is due to one of many small under skin growths.
She had a horrible ear infection that cleared up with the use of antibs and new ear solution. Antibs also helped lip folds and tear streaks seemed to disappear.
Had a wonderful 3 weeks all clear!
Subsequently same ear produces greenish stinky gunk. Under vet instruction am repeating the previous treatment, but no difference noticed, her ear still very red sore. She's becoming resistant to me treating her too, which is unusual. Also her lower eylids are unusually really droopy: could this be a sign of pain?
I've suggested a grass seed, but vet says she cant see one. I'm beginning to wonder if it's penetrated the surface of the ear canal, which apparently was quite swollen/blocked. What do others think? At 15 yrs old next wk, I'm feeling cautious about putting her through an op, but this might be needed?

Here's the catch: we're currently away from home and due to move sites tomorrow by midday. Plan at this moment is to try to make an early appointment at a nearby vet to see what they say. Then either home or carry on with hols.

I'd be very grateful of people's suggestions and opinions. Thanks!

Poor Millie, I've had very minimal experience in these matters as Charlie is only 7.5months, and I noticed instantly a change the moment the grass seed got in his ear as his whole behaviour changed. Wasn't visible until vet looked right down it though. I guess the only way a vet could guarantee no foreign object would be to run X Ray's? Really hope u get to the bottom of it. Horrible seeing them so un comfortable

Thank you Briggo 09!
This morning we saw the vet who was great considering he had only just got notes from our usual vet. Prescibed another ear ointment -Easotic- and had a really good look for grass seeds too. Then he checked Millies eyes. He found an ulcer on her right eye! No wonder she was rubbing both sides of her head on the grass. So 2eye drops, 1x3 daily and 1x4daily!

Really pleased I took Millie: vet suggested that she needed her eye checked in 4 days, so we'll see how it goes. I may decide to go home at that point rather than continuing our trip... Have our vets number all ready for making an appointment for Friday/Saturday..

Poor Millie, - an eye ulcer sounds very sore!
Glad you got it diagnosed and hope it'll clear up quickly!
