Title: Baileys first night
Post by: Baileyboy78 on August 17, 2016, 07:07:23 AM
Sorry I didn't get around to updating my introduction post. Yesterday. I got Bailey, my 8 week old show cocker yesterday. He gorgeous ❤️. Our first night didn't go as planned though. I had planned to sleep on the sofa with him in his crate right next to me. However he wouldn't stop crying so I lifted him up with me on sofa. He slept ok, waking up every couple of hours and I took him in the garden for wees. I got about 5 hours of broken sleep. I don't no whether I should continue letting him sleep with me or be a bit tougher and ignore his crying in the crate? I'll try and post a pic of himXx

Aww!  You'll find a way through it.  There are as many opinions on how to manage it as there are members here, so you just have to decide on a plan and stick with it - consistency is the main thing, don't chop & change as Bailey will just get confused about what you want from him.
Don't expect a good night's sleep any time soon  ;)
Can't wait to see pics - what colour is he?

Oh bless him, first night away and he would needed added love.

Its a difficult one, Ollie was a rescue and seven months when we got him, the crate started in the kitchen the first night, then moved to the bedroom, then he ended up on the bed, eight years on you find him where HE wants to be, one thing you must learn is cockers are strong minded little peeps :luv:  You are right it is difficult to ignore the crys.
Just remember there is always plan two!

Hope you get a better nights sleep, I think Baily and you will do just fine.

Aww lovely snuggly puppy.

I also slept downstairs the first few nights with Jinley in her crate beside me.

This is what I did.  The crate was covered in a blanket, she had an old fashioned ticking clock in the bed (well wrapped so it couldnt be chewed), a tshirt that I had worn and a blanket from the breeder.  I also bought a small battery childs night light and that was all I used.  No conversation other than a comforting shhh.

Didnt get much sleep for a couple of nights, but after that she was fine.

Good luck and errr photos please????

Thank you. I think I'll sleep on the sofa again tonight. I've been trying him in his crate when he's tired but even if I put him in there asleep he wakes instantly. I think I'll try putting a ticking clock and my t shirt in there. I can't work out how to upload a pic. I've put one on my profile but it's sideways lol. He's a blue roan. His Mam is blue roan as well but she was very dark. Bailey has a lot of white. He actually looks like a black and white dog. I'm not sure if he will change much. Anyone else with blue roans that were very white at 8 weeks old? Not that I mind either way I'm just interested in what he might turn out like ☺️

Agree with Blueberry, there are no real wrong or right ways. I slept on the sofa next to the box and just tried to offer as much comfort as I could, - T shirts, ticking clocks, soft music are all good ideas. It is hard and its breaks your heart to hear them cry, I don't think having him on the sofa with you will do any real harm but I'd really only let him do it for a couple of nights and then try and set up a bedtime routine  and be consistent, they learn amazingly quickly what to expect of you and what you expect of them and feel happier in a routine.
This time last year, I was going through the exact same thing but it passes very quickly and he'll be sleeping through, before you know it!
Best of Luck - lookforward to pictures!

Blue is a blue roan and was quite light at 8/52, but his colour has developed beautifully.  I had no particular preference for a colour initially, but now I think blue roan is the best!  Not biased at all, of course! ;)

First night worries are so common and as all the others have said, it is down to how you want things to be in the future. I remember last year sleeping on the sofa with a crying little puppy next to me in his crate. It is so hard not to want to pick them up and have those very special cuddle and make that special bond. Our boy will not go near his crate now and happily sleeps on his vet bed until it is time to go upstairs. The OH gave in and he now sleeps in our room very quietly and he is very happy.

You have to make the choice and stick with it.

We had Ollie in his soft bed next to our bed for the first couples of weeks.  That way we all slept well (I usually fell asleep with my hand draped over the side near to him)but were awake immediately when he started snuffling around to get our attention to take him out to wee.  We then moved his soft bed so that it was against the back wall of the bedroom for another few weeks and then, after one night when he was being a real pain and wouldn't settle for ages, we put him in his crate in the kitchen.  I expected all manner of crying but actually he was completely quiet until about 6am and that was him established happily in his crate from that point onwards. (Now goes to his crate but has free range of the kitchen from about 9 months).
