Title: Cheeky little Zak
Post by: Bootz482 on August 31, 2016, 10:02:10 AM
Zak is a digger and likes to eat stones so rather than chase him around the garden trying to catch him and get them out his mouth, i give him a treat and say drop it. It has been working great. No more running around after him playing chase. The only trouble is i think he is deliberately picking the stones up just to get a treat as he now brings them in the house to me lol.

He, as most pups do, more than likely think they are on to a good thing here, still better to eat treats than stones (or anything else he shouldn't) I guess, clever Zak  :005:  :luv:

Oh yes, they are smart. Henry will get hold of something he knows he's not allowed and trot past me, slowing down to make sure I can see what he's got before legging it to the kitchen. By the time I get there, he is sitting at the counter where the treats are kept with the contraband item already dropped at his feet.

Little monsters , - doesn't take them long to catch on!!
We made the mistake of shouting "Biscuit" to get Humphrey to come in from the garden, as calling him just didn't work. Now Summer's here and the door is open most of the time, he'll eat the biscuit and then tear outside again and sit on the lawn waiting for me to call again!....... >:D

Ellie is almost 5 and does this with socks all the time. She deliberately grabs one, runs away with it then brings it back waiting for you to ask her to drop so she gets a treat. She always looks so proud of herself.

Maddie does this with socks and now any soft toys our grandson brings. She deliberately goes looking for them!

Lol Smudge does this with socks, dish cloths out of the washing machine, tissues and kitchen roll I say to him "what do good boys get" and he knows he's getting a treat and runs into the kitchen, they are so cheeky aren't they you can't resist them  :005:

Yep know that one, the trick is to shut the door to the garden before giving the treat.

Effie does exactly the same - digging holes in the flower beds to find the stones, then trotting happily into the house to sit in front of me crunching away. She also does it with sticks, snails and flowers  :-\

Sometimes I try to ignore her thinking if I show no interest she'll get bored, other times I have to take it off her because the noise is grating. The vet nurse said she could chip the enamel off her teeth so I should discourage it - but (and judging by the comments above) that's easier said than done! If I gave her a treat every time I took a stone off her, she'd be the size of a house and I'd have no stones left in my garden!!  :005:

Literally stones and flowers in my garden are the bane of my life  :005:

Wooop.Rosie loves wood, and is slowly working Her way through the sleepers that form the edge of my veg patch.......which is devoid of veg and looks like a minefield with all the holes that have been dug.....She has to be watched constantly. Can't leave Her in the garden alone.Everytime She gets told to leave and gets sent into the house .Am beginning to think She is missing something in Her diet...creosote maybe!! It does seem to be a Cocker thing, friends with other breeds just  do not seem to have the same problem, at least not to the point of obsession.

I spend most of my time with a finger in Maisie's mouth trying to flick out snails and worms.....not easy when you're a vegetarian and can't bear touching anything 'real'  >:D >:D >:D
