Title: Finding The Right Stud

Hi

I am new to this!

I have got 2 beautiful blue roan Bitchies whom I was advised from the breader that were from great bloodline???


I would like to continue this blood line but really dont know where to start any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The girls are 1yr past may .

No advice I'm afraid - but I am sure some of the expeirenced breeders will be along shortly. Do you show your girlies? What are there names BTW?

Hi

No I dont show them just enjoy having them as pets.

 Abi and Bertie are their names.

Not a breeder either, but, I'm sure the advice you'll get when they come along is if you bought them as pets enjoy them as pets.

My 'pet' Kyro is also 'from good lines' but I wouldn't breed from him as I wouldn't have a clue where to start, or have the time to dedicate to it...from what has been said here before, a) its a minefield and b)if you don't know what to you'll be jepordising the breed...

I would say enjoy you pets and leave there, unless you a have real intention of finding out all the ins and outs and doing a real good and researched job of it...

Welcome to the forum, you've come to the right place :D

If you don't show them how do you know they are good enough to be bred from? Many many dogs come from excellent bloodlines but it does not mean they are anywhere near good enough to be bred from.

These are your pets, I would enjoy them just as that, pets. :D

If on the otherhand you are serious about breeding and are prepared to have all the relevant healthchecks done etc then start by talking to your girls breeder. If they are from top quality bloodlines then they would be willing to give you their honest opinion as to the validity of this idea and the quality of your girls.

Start reading as much as you can about what breeding entails and the likely costs - emotional and financial. You could start with our FAQ  (http://cockersonline.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=3428) on the very subject. Then get hold of The Book of the Bitch by Kay White, it's the reputable breeders bible :D

Most breeders who do it right don't make a profit out of breeding, they do it for the love of the breed.

Sorry if this seems harsh - in many ways it's not meant to be but in some it is. So many people sadly think breeding is a game which as many can testify it isn't and the costs can be massive especially in emotional terms.

we breed and show our cockers and golden ret
if you are looking for a stud dog they need to have clear eye certifictes and also a very low hip score like 1:1 even better 0:0  you then add both numbers up the lower the num the better  :D
also need a very good temp  :)

the book of the bitch is very good to read  :)

I would thoroughly suggest you get in contact with your girls breeder as no-one will know your girls and their parentage better and they can advise you on whats best, it is also reassuring to know you have the support of your girls breeder whether you choose to breed or whether you decide to get her speyed.

Thanks to all that have replied - I have read the Book of the Bitch which my breader reccomended to me also.

I will contact her for advise too.

Welcome to COL Cazza :) I think you need to ask yourself why you want to breed from your girls. I'm afraid that wanting to continue a bloodline is not really a good enough reason. If your bitches come from well-known bloodlines, then those bloodlines are probably already being continued - it's unlikely that your girls are the last of a valuable line. Normally your breeder is the best person to ask about all aspects of breeding - a good, experienced breeder is an invaluable source of help & support for a novice breeder. But not all puppies come from good breeders & many may not have the experience or knowledge to offer you the support you will need. Please think long & hard about whether you do really want the responsibility of bringing puppies into the world - it is a massive commitment & you would be responsible for those puppies for the rest of their lives (the responsibility does not end when puppies leave for their new homes).

Cazza - I hope this doesn't sound negative, but other than your breeder has anyone from the show world confirmed that your bitches are "good blood"? Are their sire, dame grandparents, or any other litters with these ancestors currently being placed at shows?

I have heard of breeders who use this "good blood" line to sell puppies at an inflated price  <_<  If you use Google to search for the affixes and KC names of Abie and Bertie's recent ancestors you will be able to see whether the current dogs in the line are doing well  :)

Don't get me wrong; I'm not against new breeders in any way - but with so many puppies being bred indiscriminately, it would be shame for you to breed and then find out that you had been misled about their potential. I think there are many breeders who looked for several years until they found a suitable breeding bitch - and then the search begins for a stud with characteristics (and genetics) to compliment her!

I appreciate everyone who has replied and am going to take all of the information and advice given to me.

I have not fully decided if I am going to breed from my girls as I am well aware that it is no easy task.

I am going to do my homework 110% to make sure that I get all the information that is required to ensure that both me and my girls are well and trully prepared for whatever lies ahead.

I am trying to find out as much as possible now as the girls are only 1yrs old and only had one season so i have got enough time to be learning as much as possible before the time for mating would be right.

hi cazza,
            can i ask if you have bred dogs before,i ask this because a friend of mine decided she would like to breed from her pet german shepherds and her bitch was never the same afterwards(come to think of it niether was my friend)the bitch was a very friendly dog until she had her pups and then she turned quite nasty not just while she had the pups but until she died last year,so for seven years the dog would have to be locked away if my friend had any visitors.which was unfair on the dog and upsetting for my friend.i would strongly advise you to leave the breeding to people who know what they are doing and enjoy your lovely dogs as pets.
            also most people totaly underestimate just how much hard work is involved in breeding.my friend was reduced to tears through sheer exhaustion on more than one occaision
