Title: New Baby Girl
Post by: crunchie on November 16, 2005, 02:55:35 PM
Very excited.  Going to look at some puppies on Saturday.  6 week old blue roans.  It is three years since I lost my last cocker and it has been very lonely without a dog.

Anyway, have been really impressed with all the name suggestions for the little boy that Daisy's mum is getting, so if anyone has got any ideas for a little blue roan girl they would be much appreciated.  Open to all suggestions but would like something quite cute and girly.

Also would like any advice on introducing them to cats.  We have two cats who knew my last cocker but she was 13 and completely blind and never bothered them unless she accidentally walked into them, or they were in her basket refusing to get out!!!!!  Obviously a puppy is going to be a completely different kettle of fish.  I want them to get on and don't want the cats to feel pushed out so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, puppy crates.  Would you recommend and if so, what size for a cocker.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

I bet you're so excited....

What about Molly or Fliss?

I have the same problem with the Cat Dog issue so can't really offer any advise on that score. The 3yr old cat and 15week old pup are seperated by a child gate at the moment..... for the reason of giving Abby somewhere to escape to and to stop Baxter from rummaging in the litter tray and eating her poo...... lets just say kisses have been banned....

I am rubbish at names I'm afraid so i'll let the others help you with that.

I am very new to being a cocker owner but i would say a definite yes to the crate - it is keeping our sanity!

We are using a crate that somebody is lending us for the first few months, but we will end up getting a failry large one i think in the end.  I would go at least one size larger than they call a medium dog size as most people find that cockers like to stretch quite a bit!  Obviously though when they are young its more useful for it to be smaller to help with the toilet training.  SOme people say that you can block off half of a large crate with boxes at first while your puppy is small and this prevents you having to get two crates - but we haven't done this ourselves.

Good luck and enjoy your visit :)

Thanks for all your suggestions so far.  Yes, am very excited and will no doubt be on here saturday afternoon telling you all about it.

The mention of the litter tray made me smile and brought back some memories.  When our old cocker was quite small we had some friends round for the evening.  Next thing we knew Crunchie had come into the lounge and was very carefully placing a cat poo at their feet, that she had obviously just got out the litter tray.  Luckily they also had cats and dogs themselves so we all had a good laugh about it.  Little charmers aren't they?

Hiya, we called our little cocker girl Bella after a long and drawn out name choosing few weeks in our family, no body liked any of the names that anybody else liked!

My favourites where:

Jessie
Rowena
Faith
Flossy
Honey
Fern
Keira
Delilah
Hollie

our cocker is a gold and white little girl.
For a blue roan you could have:

Dakota
Pearl
Carrie
Milly
Poppy

hmm that's enough from me  :)

Best wishes Mary

Yes puppy crates are an excellent idea! We have a 9 week old working cocker and she loves her crate. Great for toilet training too as they dont like to mess in thier own bed. Roxi sleeps in hers all night and never a peep out of her. She even goes into it herself sometimes for a nap!!
