I have been looking at crates for the new pup and I have noticed, as with most things in life, there is a big difference in price. I want one of the medium sized ones (about 30 ins long) and I can't imagine that I would want it for very many months as I am around during the day and would prefer her to have an ordinary bed. I don't really know though as I have never used on before and I can see that some of your dogs still like them as adults.
Anyway, I have been offered a second hand one from Argos for £24.00. Apparently in immaculate condition. Has anyone got one of these and, if so, are you happy with it. Some crates are coated and they look very swish but I wonder if the pups chew the coating off?
On the other hand, I would like to have a go at showing, so I ought to get something that would be okay to take to shows.
Finally, we have a 2.5 hour plus journey home when we pick up the pup. Should we bring her back in the crate? Or would it be better to have an open topped box so that she can see me and I can stroke her? DH wil be driving!
Thanks

The Argos crate is fine for most people's needs although you might find it's a little too big to take to shows where space can be at a premium (particularly benched Championship shows where the benches are a fixed size so only a smaller crate would fit them). That's probably looking too far ahead though - I'd say go for the Argos crate if you've got the chance of a second hand one at a bargain price ;) I'd recommend you have the puppy on a towel on your lap for the journey home unless she is crate trained already in which case she will be fine in a crate.

Crate sounds a good deal - you can pay about £60 for a new one though I got mine off E-bay for about £30. As long as it is big enough to accommodate the pup as it grows I would go for it! ;) Coco never chewed her crate - she preferred the furniture ::) but I don't think the coating comes off.
Re the journey home - I brought Coco home in an open box with a towel in it - a friend came with me and sat with her. You will probably end up cuddling her on your lap though! ;) In the event, Coco just went to sleep for most of the journey which was about 2.5 hours.

My pups were brought home in the cat carrier, and my friend brought her pup home from Lizzies Barn in the cat carrier as well

Great, thanks. I'll snap up the argos one whilst I have the chance.

Forgot to say that my instinct was to have pup on my lap on the journey back home (as I did with the last one) but thought that was a big "No No" now! I'll have her in a stapped in box at the side of me in the back seat and then cuddle her when she needs it.

I have an Argos crate in the car, it's easy to collapse when you want to get shopping in and the two dogs are quite happy in it but we decided it was too small for puppy to be shut in as a crate and bought another. It also made it easier rather than moving it when we go out.
We thought it was good value for money though.

I had the Argos one for Poppy and she used it for 6 months with no trouble. Only minor problem was that some stoopid woman ( :embarassed:) washed the foam and its cover, which then split and shrank! Poppy then had a good chew of the foam!
