Title: not such a happy new year for barkley
Post by: ali on February 14, 2007, 09:59:51 PM
poor old barkers is not having a terribly good 2007 so far... :(

it started on the 2nd of january when his mean mum left him at the vets and he woke up to find a certain rather delicate part of his anatomy had vanished! :o he then had to put up with discomfort, wearing an upside down lampshade on his head, and nothing but on-lead walks for 10 days. this was coupled with needing to return to the vets to have his anal glands emptied (ouch!) and finding out that his eardrums had both perforated.  >:( three weeks later, all healed up nicely, his nose then reacted to something and grew to about two times its normal size. :( cue another trip to the vet and a steroid injection... and now, two weeks later, we had to make our fifth trip to the vets this year as he has managed to cut open one of his paw pads.  :'( it never rains...

so now i have a very down doggy, curled up on the sofa after not being allowed outside of the house and garden all day, with a very sore paw. :'( i know you shouldn't give dogs human emotions but he really does seem very low. i think he's only wagged his tail twice all day.  :'( hopefully his paw will heal completely within the next couple of weeks but we've been adviced to try to avoid public places for another day or so, so it's more garden exploring tomorrow...

this on top of the recent issues we've had with him being scared by quite a few dogs and becoming very nervy as a result is making us feel very sorry for him. i'd been so looking forward to half-term next week as i was going to get him out exploring the downs link and surrounding sussex countryside... but i guess we'll have to see how his paw is...

spare some happy thoughts for a rather unhappy pup and his owner at the moment.

Aww bless him. As they say 'when it rains it pours'.

My golden can sympathise.. when he came round he was in a major sulk after finding out he had been neutered.  :005:

Best wishes for a better start to the year.  :D

Wilf sympathises with him --- its 2 years since he had the op so its long forgotten but he's had to endure lots of prodding, poking and pulling since last easter when he got whiplash (he's off for another torture session vet treatment tomorrow)

poor handsome boy :luv:

ali, when he gets over this one we should try and do a mini meet somewhere and build up his confidence a bit.  it must be such a worry that he's lost a bit of 'mojo' at the moment.

lots of squidges to the handsome boy

Aaaw, poor boy Barkers  :-\ - what a rotten time you've been having with that nasty vet tampering with your nether regions and all.  Hope you soon feel more perky and are running round again.  :-*

awww... thanks so much guys. i've been feeling pretty low this past few days about it all (plus i have an icky cold which no doubt isn't helping  >:( ) and reading all your msgs this morning has made me go from feeling  :'( to :) so thank you very much.

barkley has been given all of your cyber hugs and kisses, plus quite a few more!  ;) he's still very quiet this morning but i'm taking him to my mum and dad's in a bit for a change of scene. and then my sister-in-law is back from uni for the weekend and she is one of his fave people, having been with us the day that we brought him home, so she'll definitely put some wag back into his tail.  :D

i know these things are all so minor compared to what some of you guys on COL have gone through with your dogs but thank you anyway! :)

helen- thank you too for the offer of a mini meet, it's really sweet of you. :) we have family down near yeovil who we stay with quite often so maybe next time we're heading down that way i'll pm you, if that's ok?

Are you going to come to the SE meet on 18 March?  Might help to build his confidence up to meet lots of other friendly cockers?  ;)

would love to but not sure yet if we can make it. my best mate is moving up to glasgow that weekend and we have offered the services of our focus estate to help with the move if he needs it. just waiting to see what he arranges... :)

Ah, poor little love.  Fingers crossed you have now got all your vet trips out of the way for 2007.

On the whole Muppet is Muppety but every so often she gets very stoical.  I know she is a dog but her demeanor does change.  I'm sure Barkley is just feeling a little sore and will soon be back to his normal self.  Wishing him a speedy recovery, and don't fret, you'll both be fine.

Lxx

nicola, that would be so great! unfortunately, if i do go to glasgow, the plan is that barkley will stay at home with my mum and dad. it would be a lot of driving in a very short space of time for him otherwise. :( i do hope that we get to meet alfie and tilly one day though.  :luv:

:luv: to Barkley

Hope things get better really soon  :D

Max cut his pad open very badly a few weeks ago too, it looked like it was never going to heal and i was really worried about but then got better quite suddenly when it did start to heal and  he's nearly back to himself now apart from still from having to wear a sock all the time

thanks guys. barkley is definitely a happier chappy today :D though still a bit confuddled about the lack of walks. he seems to be adapting remarkably well though. he hasn't had a proper walk since tuesday morning, when he cut his paw (we assume on glass  >:( ) but he isn't going as loopy as i feared he might. instead he's very lethargic, which is to be expected, i'm sure. can't wait to get out and about again though- we've had a lovely couple of sunny days and i hate not being able to go out and make the most of them!  >:(

paula- i read your thread when barkley hurt his paw and max's injury sounds much worse than barkers' so it's very good to hear that they do heal up eventually. :) i hope max is soon back to full fitness- he's an absolutely gorgeous fellow.  :luv:
