Title: If I Were A First Time Dog Owner.....
Post by: Michele on July 13, 2007, 05:03:06 PM
... I'd be going out of my mind right now.

Florence went to the vets for her 2nd vac yesterday and I saw the vet who I always book in with if possible. She is straight talking, no nonsense but respectful of the knowledge that you have. If I do not understand something I'm not afraid to say so and she will patiently explain in laymans terms. I have a great deal of respect for her.

Anyway, she gave Florence a good checking over and gave her a clean bill of health.
I did say to her that she has been very loose these past few days which again with a new environment is to be expected, and that I'd tried her with chicken & rice but she would only eat the chicken and leave the rice. I'd then tried her with pasta and she wouldn't touch that either (little madam). She had another good feel of her abdomen and said that it didn't even feel tender but she'd give me some tablets called Metronidazole (1/4 tablet twice a day) to settle things down.
I gave her one dose yesterday afternoon when we got home and another later last night.
Later, she didn't want any tea but I put that down to the vaccination.
Today she still hasn't wanted to eat anything, I've tried the food she's been reared on, scrambled egg but nope she wouldn't touch a thing, not even a little piece of gravy bone.

So after doing a Google I found on THIS (http://www.wedgewoodpharmacy.com/monographs/metronidazole.asp) site says that the tablets can cause a lack of appetite amongst other things.

I rang the vets this afternoon to explain and have it logged on her records that she wasn't eating and spoke to another vet whom I don't know and she told me (in so many words) that although the internet was a wonderful thing it is unlikely that the tablets have caused her inappetence although she did say they are very bitter to the taste, and suggested that I try her on a couple of tins of prescription food but if she hasn't eaten in the morning to ring again and bring her down because (and this is the bit that got me) she may have something more serious wrong with her, possibly a blockage.  >:(

I've tried her with a little of the food and she has eaten it, albeit a little reluctantly. She is quiet but happy enough in herself and although I am concerned about her I am not overly worried. She is drinking and is not dehydrated.

Different dog and different medication but this is the same scenario I had with Neneh when she had Metacam after her caesarean/spay. The day after I stopped giving it to her she was eating like she always had (v greedy dog) and never looked back.

We all need our vets but why do some potentially scare the life out of you.  >:D

I am not surprised.  Metronidazole are pigs of things, for humans too :-\

Sorry to hear that Michele  >:(  The day after I brought Dallas home, I had to rush him to the emergency vet with what turned out to be a bad bout of haemorragic gastroenteritis. At the time however, the vet was saying things like it is very possible that his intestines could be twisted and they may need to open him up and he could die  :o :o  You know what a worrier I am when it comes to my dogs so you can imagine what I was like (I was still a bit of a 'novice' back then  :005:)  Hope little Florence picks up soon - Jersey reacted very badly to Metronidazole and the vet took her off it quick smart and said it was not a nice drug so it could be very likely that it is making her feel a bit icky

i can only agree with sheryl, these tabs made me so ill they were the cure  that was worse than the illness. i am convinced these tabs were the reason my whole digestive system shut down >:D
hope florence is feeling hungry soon.

Although these are a very good broad spectrum antibiotic, they can make you have nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and can leave you feeling quite poorly.

In humans we would often have given sometihng along with them for sickness. Florence is probably feeling a little nauseated with them and doesn't know what's wrong with her :'( - how long is the course? HAve the loose motions stopped? What age is Florence?

Poor little thing - hope she is feeling better soon.

kb she's 10 weeks

The vet gave me enough for 6 days but I've only given her the two 1/4 tablets doses yesterday, I haven't given her any more since.
She's perked up a bit since having the small amount of prescription food and has been for a poo which was still loose but not as bad as it was.
I think I shall carry on with the prescrip. food and see where we go from there.

Poor little poppet has really seemed down in the dumps and from what you've described of these tablets I'm not surprised.

Needless to say she is getting plenty of cuddles and TLC  :luv:

Aw, Michele, sorry to hear little Flo is not feeling 100%.  :luv:  Like you say it is good that you are used to having dogs.  I used to panic every time Coco had a tummy upset when she was small and she had quite a lot of them  >:(  Now I tend not to worry if she is lively and eating and drinking alright.  What a hard mummy I am  :-\

Hope she is better soon - sure she will enjoy the fuss and cuddles (probably not as much as you will though  :shades:  :005:)

Michele the chicken ( if shes not used to it )  may not be helping with her loose poop . some dogs take some getting used to chicken and produce loose stools .on personal exsperince 5 out of the 6 of my pups just dident do well with chicken yet turkey was a differnt story . no problem there at all . at about 7 or 8 months my lot were back on chicken slowly and have it regular now .
The vet agreed that some  dogs take some time to get used to it . he used to reccomend it for sore tums but now reccomends fish with boiled rice .since ive told him about turkey he might reccomend that
Hope shes feeling better very soon

Michele, I give active Manuka honey (16 rating) to pups who are a bit loose and off their food - it seems to work a treat and gets them back to normal in no time. Our pups love it and can't wait to lick it off the spoon :D

Thanks for that Jane, if she has perked up a bit by the morning I'll give it a try but if she carries on as she is at the moment then I'm taking her to the vets.
I've tried her with a small amount of prescription food and I also cooked a haddock fillet and offered her a tiny flake, she wouldn't touch either.

I must admit that I'm getting worried now. :'(

Does anyone know how long I should expect for this stuff to work its way out of her system?

In Jersey's case, it was the best part of 24 hours after stopping treatment before she stopped vomiting  :-\

Feel better soon little one  :-*

She's just come out of her bed, had a little tail wag and then had a poo on the kitchen floor (first time ever, but no way is she being told she was wrong) and it's a bit firmer.
I just hope that she's passed some more of the medication out of her system. :-\

Glad to hear!  :D

I think Metronidazole is given every 12 hours so I assume it takes about that long to move through.

I have to admit to being surprised, we always carried it with us to shows in case anyone got the squits, I've never heard of problems with it nor have I ever had any myself  But you should probably know by tomorrow morning if it was the meds that caused it.
Title: Re: If I Were A First Time Dog Owner.....
Post by: Michele on July 14, 2007, 08:33:32 AM
Well we've had some more diarrhoea overnight BUT she is a lot brighter in herself, in fact a little whle ago she was play yipping at Halle (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8399/thumbsup4kk.gif). So I'm sure the metronidazole is out of her system and that really brings me back to square one.
She still won't eat, and although she's drinking and not dehydrated I wondered whether some Lectade might help to get the electrolyte balance back up?

Jane, I've looked on the Holland & B site and they only have UMF 10 rating. Is there anywhere I can get some today as obviously I can't wait for an internet order.

I'd get the 10 rating honey Michele - it's still active which is what you need. I got my supply of 16 rating honey when I was in Australia so maybe it's not available that easily over here.

Glad Florence seems brighter today :luv:

Just had a brainwave and looked on the Julian Graves site and they have Manuka Honey (http://juliangraves.com/?PageID=554&StockCode=MANUKAHONEY20) in 10+ and 20+ strengths amongst others.

We've got a store in town so I'm off down there now.  :D

I took Florence down to the vets at 10.30 this morning, she is still no better and will not eat. They've put her on a drip to get some fluids/meds into her. I'm waiting to hear from the vet a bit later on but she will be staying in overnight.

Can't say much more at present too upset, thoughts and prayers please.

Post by: Michele on July 15, 2007, 09:19:52 PM
Thanks you for all your kind words, it really does help. I'm sorry my post was so brief earlier on, I hope I didn't sound melodramatic. I'm feeling a bit better now and have got my sensible head back on.

We took her this morning because she really wasn't showing any signs of improvement.
The vet had a really good feel of her abdomen and she still couldn't detect any real problem although her intestine was gurgly with fluid, her temperature was normal.
My main concern was I couldn't get her to eat and you could see she was losing weight. Trying to get the honey down her was a battle and I felt so mean.

It's been an emotional rollercoaster this afternoon and I couldn't wait to hear from the vet any longer so I rang her around 6pm.
She is slightly brighter, has been taking small drinks of water and hasn't vomited, she's still sleeping a lot but that's not a bad thing.

She said she will ring me later tonight before she goes off duty, and I will hear from them again first thing in the morning.

In the meantime I think we've found what the cause is. I hadn't rung her breeders today as I knew they were at the Cocker Club show and I didn't want to spoil their day, there's nothing they could've done, but I did speak to them as they were driving home and it seems that at the workplace of one of them a  number of people have been of work with sickness and diarrhoea and the reason/source seems to be a new water cooler they've had fitted and that it is a Giardia (http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/gia.html) infection!
I had an upset tum on Friday!!

The drip that Florence is on has got metronizadole going through it, which treats Giardia. So what I first thought was making her more ill turns out to be the right thing to treat her with.

Will keep you posted as and when.

Edited to add that lack of appetite is also a symptom of Giardia.

Thanks so much for the update Michele - have been thinking about you. I'm glad you've found the cause, or that it looks like you have. I was only thinking earlier if you'd managed to chat to the breeder to see if there was anything there.

Look forward to even better news tomorrow ;)

Make sure you get some rest. A glass of wine might help ;)

Just had a call from the vet and she says Florence has really perked up in the last two hours and is coming up to the front of the pen and wagging her tail (http://img99.exs.cx/img99/8577/yupi3ti.gif). She still hasn't eaten but she's not over concerned as she still has a way to go, and she hasn't vomited.  :shades:

I've told her about the Giardia and she thanked me for the info which obviously will be helpful.

Being as they have there own website I don't think there's any wrong in posting a link, but THIS (http://www.vetswycombe.co.uk/HTML/staff.html#anita) is who has been caring for Florence and is on duty overnight (I thought she finished at 10 but it seems not  :-\)
She might not have been qualified that long but she seems to know her stuff AND is really nice. :shades:

Thank you once again for all your good wishes, I've heard other people say it and it might sound corny but it really does help. (http://www.forumup.com/images/smiles/slider_thankyou.gif)

Hi all, well she's still down there :016: she is much, much brighter but still not eating. She was sick once overnight and so they've given an anti-sickness jab. She's taking water ok and has been yipping and wagging her tail when anyone goes past. I've taken a couple of soft toys down there for her as company but as hard as it was I decided not to see her, I'm coping quite well at the moment and I think if I saw her I might just melt. :'(

The plot thickens as her breeder rang me this afternoon and their pup and another one being held for someone (Florence's sisters) have both been admitted at their vets with the same symptoms. Their vets have doubts that it is Giardia as they feel they would be much worse if it was. :dunno:

My fav vet also rang earlier and she's had a look at Florence and I think they are quite baffled. Her temperature is normal, there's no tenderness in her tummy, she's brightened up but still won't eat.
She felt if I brought her home today, she'd only end up back down there. I told her I want her to stay to the point where she is eating and when she comes home we can build her back up slowly.

So she's not out of the woods yet, but will let you know how she progresses.

Keep those positive vibes coming please.

Michele :003:

It's bad enough when they're ill and you know what the problem is. For them to be so ill and not be clear what the vause is is just anightmare! I truly hope that between the three vets they manage to find out what the problem is make them all better.

I think you're being incredibly brave for your little girl Michele. It's easy to think about what we want - but putting what she needs first is not always easy.

Keep at it chuck ;) And you know where we are ;)

Sending gentle hugs to her and sloppy kisses from my lot. We'll be thinking of you all.

You guys are a real tonic, thank you so much.

One thing  between the breeder and myself that we've been discussing is the amount of dogs with upset tums at the moment.
I told her about how many of you on here have said your dogs have not been well, and one thing we agreed on was when you consider the amount of rain we've had recently and the flooding, all the waste from that has to go somewhere. Then it dries up and is taken back up into the atmosphere where it can travel on the wind, then it rains again and if this bug is water born it must be having a field day. :dunno:

I just hope she's tucked up tight with her cuddly's and working on her appetite. :003:

I had to drive past the surgery as I came back from getting my hair done tonight. It's horrible to think she's in there and I can't get to her.  :'(

Get well soon Florence  :luv: & sisters Lily & noname.(http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/2702/hugbybciemnyka6.gif)

I've just read through this post, I'm so sorry to hear of the troubles poor Florence is having - Michele, I will be thinking of you both.  It is the most awful thing when they are so poorly that they have to be admitted to hospital.  Parker, Mrs Bridges and me all send hugs and best wishes :luv:

I cannot get over the amount of cocker tummy trouble around at the moment...

Morning all  :D Yes a smiley face. Heard from Anita at the surgery a little while ago and Florence has eaten overnight, in fact she cleared the dish. :shades:
She wants to try her with some more small meals throughout this morning and observe and if all is well she can come home this afternoon. (http://www.iheartpaws.com/forums/images/smilies/Bananejump.gif)(http://img99.exs.cx/img99/8577/yupi3ti.gif)

I haven't heard from her breeder to find out how her sisters are today, but will be hopeful that they're back home soon too.

THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE - YOU'VE SEEN ME THROUGH :bigarmhug:

It's been a fun packed afternoon, and I've just sat down.  ::)

I'm giving her tiny meals about every 3 hours, she likes the i/d canine kibble but she not at all keen on the tinned food, although she has eaten some.

At the moment she's protesting that it isn't really bedtime and I should be allowed to stay up late cos I was very vocal this past 24 hours at the vets.  :005:

She's going to be fine I'm sure, as for me the word frazzled comes to mind.

She's eating small meals about every 3 hours and is pooing fine. Gave her the metrozidanole last night and again just now with no adverse effect.
