Title: Comfort Blanket
Post by: Penelope on August 28, 2007, 09:59:16 PM
Buffy has just turned 6 months and loves nothing better than to have something soft to carry in her mouth.  Given the chance, she pinches socks from the washing basket (which worries me as she could easily swallow one!)
Recently she has found the little scrap of blanket her breeder gave us when we got her (it had her mum's scent on it and all her siblings, but has been washed loads of times since then  :005:)  She seems to really, really love it.  She carries it around with her, wagging her tail frantically. She will give it up if asked (in fact she does "drop" much better than Suki and Josie put together  :005:) but I just wondered if I should worry about it at all?  Is it ok or is it something to worry about?  I know I am a worry guts, but just wondered if it was normal for a pup to revert to a comforter like this, or should I just be grateful she has that to carry around instead of constantly pinching socks?
BTW she looks incredibly cute carrying it - I will have to try and get a picture.

I wouldn't worry as long as you are happy she is not likely to swallow it   ;)
Coco usually carries around one of her teddies and she is 2 now - I thought it would be quite  helpful as it might stop her barking all the flippin time but she has now found a way to bark with a bear in her mouth!  >:(  :005:

Piccy's needed of that Bootiful girl  ;)

I wouldn't be worried if she isn't actually chewing it and eating it  ;)

I agree, as long as she's not likely to swallow it I would just keep an eye on her.

Looking forward to my Buffy fix.  :luv:

I suppose the only worry is if she comes to rely on it and then loses it. It might be worth trying to get her to alternate what she carries around so she doesn't build up a dependence. Having said that, Stevie has always managed to switch to a new toy each time one her Piglets has become so revolting it's had to be thrown out... but a bit of puppy blanket isn't so easily replaced, I guess.

Jessie is just over 4 yrs old and she still likes to carry stuff around. She wont settle in he bed unless she has 2 or 3 soft cuddlytoys inthere with her - sometimes there isnt any room for her  :005:

When we come in or have visitors she always finds a toy and shows it to you....never lets you have it tho.... ph34r

Bella is 3 and loves carrying her 'babies' around. She has quite a little family going-7 at the last count, all on her bed. She also loves socks and is quite partial to knickers  :P Lovely when visitors come around :005:

I knew a golden who had a comfort blanket her whole life. It was so adorable  :luv:  She would carry it around and proudly show it to everyone.
I've read somewhere that retriever and spaniels will carry things to show joy  :D
My own cocker can entertain herself for ages collecting socks from my sock drawer and placing them carefully around the house. She does not even hide them, she just spreads them around  :005:

Tigs will carry anything - when you greet her, she won't come to you until she has something in her mouth and it could be anything from a small twig to a piece of paper the size of a stamp!  As you can imagine - she loves retrieving.

My husband was putting together another kennel at the weekend and he kept dropping the screwdriver down the back of the kennel.  He could'nt get behind the kennel to get it, so we sent Tigs in to retrieve and she gladly collected it - a number of times!!!

Jakey is 2 and he carries his toys around.  He greets us with something in his mouth, if no toy available whatever is closest  :luv:

Whenever we call him or invite him onto the settee or bed he brings us a present.

Ben always has to find something to carry when someone enters the room!  He gets a bit frantic if he can't find a toy or piece of bedding and resorts to a cushion if in desparation!  >:(

Gotta love him though - it is really cute the way he parades round with his head and tail held high as he shows off with his rear end waving at the new entrant to the room  :luv:
