Title: Optigen testing - a mad question, but I have to ask

I shouldn't need to ask this, as I am almost certain I know the answer, but I will do anyway  ph34r

Is it possible for two Optigen tested PRA-clear dogs to produce PRA affected/carrier puppies ?? I thought it was a simple recessive inherited disease, but comments made on another forum suggests that it is possible for affected puppies to be born to clear-tested parents, and that research is ongoing.

I can't find anything on the Optigen website about this - does anyone know if anything has been published, yet??

No,  clear to clear produces only clear.  Optigen are now offering reduced rate Optigen tests for pups from clear/clear parents.

Thanks Sharon - I *think* it was a reference to the previous "marker" tests, which of course have now been replaced with mutation tests  ;)

I'm just wondering why...if a dog is genetically clear by parentage it needs testing?  Sorry if I'm being a bit slow on this one?

It states on the optigen site that some breeders which to have the document which certifies that the puppy is clear to show to potential buyers and to complete their records.

Like every test, there might be some strange results. As it is said, with the former test, there could have been more strange results than with the new test but no test (no matter which one) can be said to be absolutely reliable. But when you have 2 clear dogs, there is an extremely small risk to have a carrier or an affected puppy.

Perhaps Optigen verifies with these kind of certification that the new test is actually accurate.

It happens sometimes that the father isn't the real father...  ph34r

also gives you an idea if you need to do a parentage test...
