Title: Dave gets attacked by dog..... and owner... grrrrrr
Post by: Hurtwood Dogs on October 21, 2007, 12:11:46 AM
Quite a few of you have posted recently about your dogs being attacked.. Dave had his first unpleasant experience today  >:(

Unfortunately, I wasn't there because if I had been the woman responsible would have seriously regretted her actions. My ex came over to walk the dogs this morning, first time he's taken the two of them out on his own, as I had to finish my sons birthday cake for his party this afternoon. Anyway, seemingly a black lab came over and started having a real go at Dave (who is only 5 months still). The owner was hot on it's heals so ex who was further away, thought she'd grab it and remove it... but no, she got an aerosol can of 'air' out and started shouting at her dog and spraying 'air' at it saying 'he's got to learn not to do this'!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o

As her dog was attached to Dave she was obviously spraying him too.. >:( >:( My ex then said the dog stopped for a moment and instead of grabbing it's collar, she just stood there so it had ANOTHER go at Dave after which followed more spraying of 'air' whereupon her dog jumped in the air and then landed on Dave who screamed then limped off... she then said it's the only way he'll learn and walked off!!!!!!! I am totally GOBSMACKED!!!! STUPID!!! HOW DARE SHE USE MY PUPPY AS A TRAINING AID IN SOME SORT OF SICK MISGUIDED TRAINING TECHNIQUE???!?!?!? Unfortunately my ex didn't confront her or do anything about it  ::) but I can't explain how much I hope I meet her and her ******* aerosol can again.. I AM FUMING. Dave is a pretty solid UN-nervy pup and pretty unflappable but I'll be amazed if he doesn't develop some sort if issues with black labs now or worse... I am SO angry.

What??!! Well, do you have her description and would recognize her? Next time you see her you can tell her "a story or two" (I am sure you will  >:D). That's unbelievable...and what kind of aerosol was that??? I have never even heard of anything like that. I feel sorry for the lab, though...but I'm sure Dave will be ok. He always sounds like such a laid-back puppy, with a thick skull  :005:...he's probably all forgotten about it already. Sorry...the world is full of idiots, unfortunately.

Oh Hannah,

Poor old Dave, that's the last thing you need. If it helps to know Mont's been picked on a fair amount by other bigger dogs and he still loves everyone and everything, had a couple of bites and general roughness from a few doglets at the park and I got a bit anxious about his reactions but he's still fine with the world.  Dave's bright enough, and definately laid-back enough to not let it ruffle his feathers.  He can have a 'chat' with Mont and put the world to rights!!!

Now that's the emotional stuff....Is he okay physically??  You said he limped off???

I saw the aerosols on an episode of 'It's me or the Dog' once, they literally spray a jet of air.  Designed to deter behaviour when used correctly but I'm not sure that letting your dog attack other dogs in the park and then spray it is classed as being used correctly??   >:D Arghhhhhhh!!  Not surprised you're angry I'd be furious too!!  >:D

Thanks chaps.. they were out in the forest so this woman could be local or have come from anywhere.. I'm just concerned as Trev was always fine with other dogs but got seriously duffed up 2-3 times when he was about 4 yrs and was a lot more wary after that  :'( I know you can't protect them from everything but... honestly, that was a bit rubbish for him  :'( I didn't see the can but the one you mention Jen sounds like the kind of thing  >:(

Physically though he seems ok now and only limped for a bit afterwards... I got another shock this evening when Storm appeared with blood all over one of her ears and face... I thought he'd really taken it out on her after his incident but on closer inspection.... it was Dave's blood  :shades: one of his puppy fangs had come out whilst he was wrestling with her and he'd obviously then attempted to 'suck' her ear to make his gums feel better :005: :005: 2 puppy fangs down... 2 to go!!!! YEY!

Glad there's a positive note to end on!!  I got seriously worried about storm for a second.  He's a tough little cookie....he'll be fine!!

arrh Hannah
hope Dave is OK,I'm sure he'll bounce back  ;) b*****y stupid dog owners and they wonder why there dogs behave as they do  ::)
Ive seen those air cans at one of the training classes i went to and it was being used on a lab who had a fixation with Bibas rear end  :o
i paid for 6 classes but only went to 2 as i didn't like the methods and Biba just ended up being the stooge dog for this lab  ::) i spent 2 lesson just walking past this dog with Biba while the trainer sprayed it with the air can everytime it came near/looked at her  but because the dog was near Biba she also got the effect off it  >:(
wouldn't mind but this training group was recommend by my vets  :-\

poor old dave! i hope he has a happy day today and shows no ill effects. i'd try to find a friendly black lab sometime this week for him to play with, if you can. :)

re: the air cannisters, i think i know what the owner was trying, very badly, to do. the idea, as i understand it, is that by making a very loud hiss of air, the cannister stops the dog in it's tracks and gives you time to distract it away from whatever it was doing that you don't want it to. our trainer encouraged anyone who walks in areas where dogs are known to attack, to carry one as a precaution. clearly this woman's technique didn't work at all though as she did nothing after the first blast of air to get her dog away.

Hannah, I'm so sorry to hear about poor Dave's experience; hopefully if he's a fairly laid-back character he'll bounce back with no ill-effects.

If you feel that he may have developed an aversion to black labs pm me as I don't live that far away from you & perhaps Dave could meet Spike & recover his confidence that way.  :D

I'm surprised storm didn't wade in, bonnie won't put up with other dogs picking on Ayla.  Have to say what an absolute moron that person was fancy not taking the dog away in the first place.  Hope dave's alright he can have a nice run with Ayla if he wants she's black and friendly :D

I hope Dave is none-the-worse for his experience  :-\

IMOTD strikes again  >:(   Sadly, there will always be owners who misuse the techniques on these shows - the only way to stop it is for people to stop watching the programmes; they might stop making them then ;)

Poor Dave bearing the brunt of bad training techniques  >:(

I took Ben out last week and he was racing off in front and met two women, one dog off lead and one dog on lead.  I called Ben back (he actually came  ;) ) and carried on to meet these two women.  I apologised for not having him on the lead at first and one of them said that's no problem, this ladies dog has dominance issues with other dogs and I'm training them.  The on lead dog sniffed noses with Ben and she produced a loud 'shaker type thing'.  The supposed 'Dominant' dog flinched before this woman shook it in its face

I'm not sure if this fear technique is right or wrong in their situation but the poor dog was only sniffing and not being aggressive at all ........... if Ben had been that placid he'd have had a treat not a threat  :-\

Thanks everyone, you're all so fab  :luv:

I guess to a certain extent, correct training techniques will always be subject to opinion but what I SERIOUSLY object to, is other people who have decided on techniques that are possibly a bit controversial feeling they can administer them in such a way that someone else's dog will also be subjected to it. My puppy got attacked by another dog, was mildly injured, had air sprayed in his face and heard a lot of shouting... all because this lady decided it was an ideal training opportunity for HER dog rather than grabbing her dogs collar and removing him... >:( and THAT is the bit that SERIOUSLY p***es me off.

Thanks Tasha, I wasn't there so I don't know how Storm reacted but Ex said she wasn't actually near by when it happened (probably off mousing somewhere  :005: ph34r) but I'm quite glad as I don't think it would have helped if she had got involved, poor Dave could have ended up underneath a big lab and weimaraner having a punch up and probably ended up very flat!

Many thanks, Joelf we should get together for a walk anyway! There is talk of a COL meet in Peaslake at the end of November so you should come to that too!

Thanks again everyone

Do you know, nothing that some dog owners do surprises me any more. I can not believe the stupidity of Mrs Airspray - your poor little Dave. How's he doing now? Please give him a hug from me,
