Title: Favourite words!
Post by: bonnie blue on October 23, 2007, 05:43:13 PM
How clever our girls and boys are!Me and OH were telling friends of the words that Cassie and Maisie understand and even phrases~
Apart from walkies amongst their favourites are Daddy's here /Mummys here
Collar on (we say that when its time for walk)
                                                                   Birdies
                                                                   Rabbits
                                                                   Pussy cat
                                                                   Wheres piggy?
                                                                   Bed time
                                                                   Chewy
                                                                   Biscuit
                                                                   Shall we go see Gandma?
I could go on and on and on but its Walkies time they are wagging their tails waiting and looking up at their leads .They are amazing  :D

Shall we go see Grandma?

My 3 know something similar to that - when at my Mum's I whisper to them "Where's Nanna ?" and they all go racing off at top speed to find her - it's not long before I can hear my Mum squealing and shrieking in the distance as she dispappears under the tongues and paws of a Cocker piley-on. "You and those dogs will be the death of me" she says - but I know she loves it really.

Mine can recognise quite a few things. Something that amazes me the most though which isn't a word is that no matter what time my OH comes in from work and this varies from day to day week to week, Milo seems to know 5 minutes before he is coming and he sits at the door :o OH walks up from the station, I often tell him he must walk like an elephant for Milo to hear him coming!! Sorry thats slightly OT but kind of not!

Jarvis' fave game is being a "postman" which involves sticking something in his mouth and saying "take it to _____" then him racing off to said person and throwing whatever it is at their feet. :luv:  So yeah, that's his favorite phrase. :shades:

Fave word is sit, because sit = treat. ::)

Murphy knows a few words, mainly food related e.g dinner and treat.

Something that amazes me the most though which isn't a word is that no matter what time my OH comes in from work and this varies from day to day week to week, Milo seems to know 5 minutes before he is coming and he sits at the door

He does this too but is too lazy to sit and wait and prefers to hang of the edge of the sofa.  ::)

Like Colins lot, Kali knows 'Where's Grandma?'  and also 'Daddy's here'.  Loads of others but they are the two that have her going loony ::)

Other than actual training commands which they know a lot of mine know quite a few funny things. When I say 'shhhh' to Alfie he'll sit down in front of me and bark  :005:  He loves it, he sits wagging his tail looking all pleased with himself. Tilly will bark and run over to look out the window if I say 'wassat?' or 'who's at the door?'. They all know that if they're sleeping on my bed when I say 'right then!' in the morning it's time to get up so they jump down and start stretching and yawning and Tilly knows the words 'bath' and 'hoover' and will go and curl up on her chair and refuse to budge if I say them, she's not a fan of either  :005:

Lady's favourite words/phrases are:

"Do you want to go in the car?"

"Do you want to go and see Nanny & Poppy?"

"Are you hungry?"

"Dinner time"

"Go find the pussy cat!"

"Where's your tennis ball?"

"Sit"

"Stay"

"Do you want to go outside?"

"Bed time"

"Where's your lead?"

Now that the summer weather is on it's way, I'll be able to ask her one of her favourite summer time questions:

"Do you want to go swimming?" - She goes crazy with excitement!!

"Squirrel"!!!!  That was the first word Jerry learned after we moved from Germany to the US, into a house and yard with many of the aforementioned.  Then came "cookie" (after being spoilt by OH's mum) and, of course, "walk", or "are you ready??!!" (before we do our evening howling routine).

Then a couple of sentences in German (yes, Jerry is bi-lingual  :shades:  :005:), like "wo ist das Herrchen?" (where is OH?) or "schau mal wer da ist" (look who's there), "willst Du mal raus?" (you want to go outside?). Most important word is, of course,  "Essen" (Food )

The rest is the usual training words, most of which he knows in both languages . (they are probably not his favorite, though  ph34r)

It's amazing the repertoire of words that Cockers have and how knowing they are.  It's also obvious that members spend time with their pets and share experiences with them.

I got Charley just after I took very early retirement, and consequently we are very rarely separated.  He knows and understands a host of words and expressions, far more than my previous two Cockers, and I attribute this to him being a constant companion. Although both of my other Cockers came to work with me, and were never left home alone, they were often left in my office or car and were not always at my side.

Charley has dry eye and consequently requires frequent eye medication during the day.  I only have to say, "Let Daddy see those eyes," and he comes into the kitchen and jumps on a chair so that I can administer his ointments.  He senses when we are going out, and runs around barking excitedly.  You'd think he'd never been out in his life.

Trev was once in the boot of the car and I was just about to close it when I realised there was a box of 'stuff' in there too. So I was muttering away to myself 'oh blurry hell, what a pain so can't be bothered to go back and take that to the house, you're probably going to have to go on the front seat mate otherwise you'll get squashed when I go around a corner just don't get mud everywhere...' before I knew it, he cocked his head on one side, jumped out of the boot and trotted around to the passenger side and climbed in  :005: I just stood there with my jaw on the floor... probably a fluke, but you never know!  :005: :005:

Apart from the training words, etc, their absolute favourites are 'Are you hungry?', 'Whats this?', 'Biscuit', 'Walkies', and 'Ball'.  :005:

Ben knows the words and phrases that I've deliberately taught him but he's cottoned on to a few more!

'I'm going to get changed' has him leaping off the sofa as it usually means me getting into muddy dog walking gear.

'Becky, hurry up or we'll be late' has him in his crate waiting for the calcium bone with a treat in!

'I'm just going to put the bins out' has him screaming the place down in excitement as he loves to help drag the bins into the alleyway (and have a quick hunt for cats in the alley).

'Do you want chicken for dinner?' (or any sentence that has the word chicken in) has him sat at the fridge with pleading eyes!

If I've lost something and say 'where is it', he goes very hunter like and searches for rabbits or mice .............. but on the sofa or behind the TV?  I do use this phrase when we're out though and he loves searching for small furries in the undergrowth.

They are so clever at picking up on things like the TV being switched off at bed time - or work clothes as opposed to day off clothes - knives and forks being put on the plate at the end of a meal (Ben is a star at that one)!

My (now long-departed) lovely Bess used to respond frantically to "squirrel" but the cutest was "bedtime". She'd search all over until she found her nylabone to take off to bed with her!

I really do think Ben is doubley doubley intelligent though Debbie - I always love hearing about him and his antics  :luv:

Hurley knows the phrase 'Are we going to go and see Kyrah, and CJ and Millie' (dogsitter and her dogs) he goes mental when I say that.  :luv:

He knows when Im getting food ready and will wait for me and then rush ahead when we take it in the lounge to eat. He's really good and never steals the food from our plate but loves to have a good sniff of what we're having  :luv:

His favourite phrases are 'Find your Ball' and 'Where's your lead' - both because they mean he's going to get his walk.

He also knows when I get changed into a particular pair of shoes and get my dogwalking bag, keys and lead he's off for a walk and then there is NO calming him down....

Trevor really sounds like Jarvis in some ways y'know, it's exactly the kind of thing my boy would do. I once mentioned the word ball in a sentence to someone.... Yep, you guessed it. ::)

I like this thread!  Lovely reading about all the phrases they've picked up on!

Wilson's favourite is "do you want"....Normally follwed by...."your din dins", or "to go for a walk", or "to go upstairs"(so he can have a bedtime cuddle!)

He also goes mad when I say "ooooh whats this" whilst looking into my hands secretly, he knows I must have something for him and comes running to find out what it is!  Another version of this is "what's daddy got" and he'll go running to find OH!

He also knows that when we mute the TV off and have stopped eating our dinner that it's time for his!  He'll be sleeping like a baby but as soon as the TV is muted his eyes open and he waits for the "do you want your din dins!!

They're so clever aren't they!

Oh and if I get my wellies out, he knows we must be going on a REALLY good walk and goes mad!  He loves running through wet grass, so if the wellies are out he knows it'll be a really great walk!

Bella's faves (the ones which illicit excited woofs from her) are:

"Shall we go to the park?"
"El parco" (we can't really say this any more as she goes ballistic!)
"We're going to Agility"
"Squirrel" (that's the all time fave, guaranteed to stop her mid-tracks)
"Look" (not sure how she picked this up but if we ever say it just in conversation, eg "look at this picture in this magazine" she leaps up and is ready for action)
"Right then" (means something's gonna happen)
"Dindins"
"Karen/Simon/Erica/Anne's coming" (some of her fave people)
"Shall we go and get Ali/Claire?" (means they're coming with us to the station to pick the other one up)

Zorro's are:
"squirrel"
"El parco"
"find it"
"is baby?" (when he's in extra soppy mode and pretends he's too tiny to climb up onto the sofa so you have to hoik his bum up for him... :luv:)
"dindins"

Sam's favourties are:

Are we going for a walk?
Are you going to play with the doggies? (when he goes to day care)
Wassat?
Where's dad?  At this point he runs about frantically looking for him  :005:
Do you want a biscuit?
Din Dins
Bedtime

Love this thread, has made me chuckle!!  :005:

Let's see,

Murphy knows them all, Maddi is quickly learning  :005:: These are the favourites in our house,

Where's your dad. (cue two cocker nose marks on the door)
Puppies want a (insert anything here!!)
Biscuits
Walk

It is scary how often some of these words are recognised when I'm havng a conversation. my dad phoned me the other night very poud of himself cos he'd made a stir fry.  I said I didn't know you had a wok- well they were on my lap and round my neck before I knew what I'd said.

Don't ya just love them!!  :luv: :luv:

I don't think this was a fluke at all 'cos a similar thing happened to my Mums late Golden Retriever Ghillie!!  We were at Ikea having bought a chair and were trying to fit it on the back seat of the car.  There was a lot of shoving and pulling (like you often see at Ikea) while Ghillie sat patiently in the boot.  We eventually decided to put the chair in the boot and Ghillie on the seat, when Ghillie jumped straight out and climbed onto the back seat, it was as if she was muttering ' I knew that wouldn't fit...they are slow sometimes..'.  She was such a smashing dog!  :luv:

I have to admit to speaking to Wherry in a stupid voice and/or with stupid words  ph34r so her faves (ones she gets excited about) are -
Toy-toys
Boney-bone
Cheeewwwwwieeesss
What have I got for Wherry????
Cuddles Wherry
Where's your Tom/ Rick-Rick?
Birdies
Brushy-brush
Whatss-ssseeee?
Sockies
Wha/who dat?
Where's Bitsy/Queenie?

And the best ever is when she used to want to stay in bed with me in the morning after cuddles Tom would sing to her 'Let's go farming now, everyone's learning how...' to the beach boy's surf safari tune and she'd be at the door like a shot  :005:

Sorry thats slightly OT but kind of not!

OT again - but our Sophie was exactly the same, she would hear my brothers Peugot 205 from at least a mile and half up the lane and would plonk herself unbudgingly at the front door waiting his return! Cockers power of perception is something else!!

I have just taught Harry "Biccy" which works to prevent danger in a variety of situations - it is so much more powerful and reliable than "Off", "Wait" "No" or "Harry Come"

"Biccy" accompanied by an organic soy and bacon dog biscuit is THE magic word we've searched for!

Poppy is only 19 weeks old but certain words are already favorites!

"Hurry up" (for lets wee or poo - Fav because she knows she gets a Treat)
"Treat"
"Where's Ted"
"Shall we go see Benji" (My mums dog)

Any my favourite "Where is David Beckham?"   :005:

No we don't have David Beckham round for tea very often  :005: she has a toy at my mum's house that is a footballer with rope for legs that we all call David Beckham and she LOVES picking him up and throwing him about (wouldn't we all!!!   :005:)

Mine know the word "Frowly" (short for Frowlesworth) where they go for a walk at Fosse Meadows

Pigeon (they go mad at this one)
and Molly knows "tablet time" as she has to take 5 or 6 tablets every night

plus all the usual ones mentioned
