Title: Herbie had his 2nd Vaccinations today!
Post by: Chellejm on November 20, 2007, 05:18:32 PM
Herbie had his 2nd lot of vaccinations today...which means this time next week we'll be able to go for walkies yippeee!! :005:

The only thing is, Herbie seems to hate his lead, I've put it on him indoors for him to get used to and try to treat him while he's ignoring it but he's contantly biting  and chewing it  ::)

What is the best way to get puppies used to a lead?
I'm really looking forward to being able to take him out (although it'll only be short strolls to begin with :) ) but at this rate it doesnt look like we'll be going anywhere!  ph34r

Don't worry, Bliss kept chewing her lead when we used it in the garden, but now she is allowed out she soon forgets the lead, , she's too busy sniffing everything in sight, its only when we stop to chat to someone and she has to stay still that she goes back to chewing the lead again, boredom I suppose. Good Luck.

I'm not sure if I'll be much help as Jake never minded the lead, but I put it on him for a short while each day but didn't hold onto it and let him drag it around (supervised of course) for a couple of days to let him get used to it, then I started to pick it up and lead him around a little.

But, as has already been said, once he gets into the great outdoors he'll probably be too interested in all the wonderful sights, sounds and smells to worry about chewing on his lead.

Yup - in the house Honey just thought her lead was another thing to chew - even tried soaking it in vinegar, which I had seen suggested!

We took her out in the front garden on lead a few times before she was actually allowed out, and she seemed better.

Now we're out for walks, she really doesn't seem to notice her lead... so I'm sure Herbie'll be fine!!!!

Herbie (love the name) will be grand - just you wait til he has lots of adventures outdoors - he will forget all about his lead, enjoy!  :luv:

Sam was the same, he used to chew his lead when we took him out.  We popped his lead on him when he was eating, so that he associated it with something good.

We also used to put it on him and walk round the garden with him.

He still chewed it though, but eventually stopped after a while!

I've got less than a week to get him to love or at least accept his lead! ;)
Next week at the puppy class they're discussing lead training so hopefully they'll be able to give me some hints too.

I'm definitely going to try putting it on at meal times to see if that helps as the treating doesn't seem to distract him from the lead!

I'm sure he'll get there in the end, I just want his first walk to be a good one!

Also on Xmas day we want to take him for a beach walk, we used to do this with our old dogs, it's great for burning off the Christmas pud :D

Don't worry, our lab hated his lead in the garden but as soon as he was able to go out on a " real " walk the biting and chewing stopped! the fact they are going somewhere new and exciting takes their minds off the fact they're wearing a lead. He will soon realise that getting the lead on is fun. It only took a few walks to accept his lead. I know the advice is to get them lead trained before it's time to go out into the big wide world but there are much more distractions to take their minds off the lead when they are finally allowed out. Hope this helps!

You should find that he won't notice it as much when he's out and about.. just pop it on him for short periods of time and he'll gradually get used to it. Personally, I wouldn't put it on him at meal times as I don't like messing with dogs when they are eating as I think it can cause other problems.

A good tip is also is to not walk him from the house if possible to start with.. some pups start slamming on the anchors and don't like walking (particularly at this time of year!). If you pop him in the car and then put him down somewhere new and let him have a sniff around it creates less of an issue with going for a walk. Don't expect too much from him too soon and let him find his way and he'll gradually get there over a few weeks!

Have lots of fun!

Bella hated the lead whilst in the garden, biting and chewing it, it wasn't worth the stress on both our parts. As soon as we went through the front door she was a changed puppy, completley ignored her lead - too many other things to sniff and look at. She's never chewed or bit it since.
