As i'm moving (and stealing my mum's chest freezer in the process ph34r) i now have the room to store food, and so can start both dogs on BARF.
I'm thinking of placing an order with landywoods in a few weeks when i'm settled, and would just appreciate an experienced barfer ( :005:) telling me exactly what and how much to buy. I'd be happier placing one big order to last a month or so 'cos i'm paranoid about running out. :005:
Jarvis is 15kg, and Lucy is a teeny 5kg. :luv:

For bones, I order chicken wings, turkey wings and turkey necks. I tried the lamb breast but it was very fatty and I ended up throwing half of it away. I've also tried the shin of beef, but that seemed to be more chunks of meat and hardly any bone. :-\
For mince, I order lamb, best beef and turkey. I also buy the tripe and offal mix. (Smells like sh!t but the dogs don't seem to mind. :005: )
I believe Landywoods have a 50 pound minimum order policy. But I can't remember if that is in weight or cash. :embarassed: I have yet to work out my order correctly so that the mince and bones last for the same amount of time. ::) Last time I ordered 6 bags of each of the bones and two trays of mince. Hopefully that should last the boys about 3 months. :D

Good luck Beth!! You wont regret it, and neither will your dogs ;)
I reckon one of the 454g packs will do both your dogs together for one day, easily, additionally you could feed the biscuit meal in the morning, with some veg/veg water, and a chicken wing each a day, should be plenty!
I havent used Landywoods (althopugh I see their delivery coverage is quite good!), I stock up at the local pet store or P@H with Prize Choice etc.
-
Right, i've gone through the landywoods price list and made a rough shopping list. Can someone tell me if i've got enough of the right bits please?
They come on 464g lots, so i was going to get 10 of everything. I'm really just making it up as i go along ph34r so would appreciate any input. :005:
Kidney chunks
turkey necks
ribs
marrow bones
chicken backs
chicken wings
hearts
liver
minced lamb tripe
minced ox tripe and organ
minced tripe and chicken
minced tripe and lamb
minced lamb
economy mince (heart and lung)
minced beef and kidney
minced chicken

Blimey, how big is your freezer! :o
That looks a good list to me - there is really more variety than you need but I am sure the doggies will love it. :D I am guessing you are going to add in veg etc too?
Only thing is I would be wary of getting too much of anything until you know they like it - Coco won't eat some of the minced poultry things and she is not keen on raw liver - I think it is the slimy texture. ::) I either cook it slightly or mix it in with something a bit rougher but would rather not be bothered with that so tend to buy other things ;)
-
Just looked at the list, the best source of protein for BARFers is from chicken which includes the skin, flesh and bones and cartilage so I'd get more of the meats and bones and not so much of the offal as this would not be given as a main meal but rather a small percentage added to the main meat.
-
I'm afraid you can't order ten of each. The 454gm bags of mince come in trays of 36 and the bones come in 5lb bags.
I order two types of mince (lamb and beef this time) and the tripe and offal mix - then they have two of each per week. One bag is enough for both of my two. They are both around 15kg.
Then I ordered 6 lots each of chicken wings, turkey wings and turkey necks.
Hopefully this will all last for about 3 months. Storage wise - it took up a 3 drawer freezer, a small chest freezer and a couple of drawers of the house freezer too. :D
-
Oh b*****, that's more freezer space than i expected. :o hmmm i might give them a ring and see what they advise...

well, if its not feasible, remember to try P@H for the Prize Choice option, you can buy as much or as little of that as you like...

Beth - in light of the thread in anything goes (http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=37645.0) if you ring them, you might want to check out where they get their poultry from - I prefer to avoid pet-grade chicken and turkey :-\
-
Ever considered Pheasant mince :-\ Its virtually fat free and from a wild source :D
-
My major problem, is that i don't drive, so getting it delivered would be a huuuuuge help. :-\
I do have a small local pet shop who would order food in for me, so if it turns out to be too much, i could have a chat with them.

Mmm, i would prefer to avoid pet-grade meat too, however money is also an issue, i need to do barf as cheaply as possible really. Surely in kibble it's all pet-grade meat anyway? Not that it majkes is okay, but y'know. :-\
I will have a chat to them though. :)

If ethics are the primary issue for you, the you could always consider Burns Organic - that is made from ethically produced meat.

Sorted! :D :D :D Just phoned up a local-ish butcher, and had a bit of a chat with him, and he's willing to deliver me chicken wings, pork ribs, and marrow bones. :D He said he can get hold of turkey necks if i became a regular customer too. :D I can probably get my mum to visit the jollyes near her work and pick up the bags of mince/tripe etc so i should be sorted. :shades:
-
Good-oh!! (dont forget the odd bit of organ meat!)
Let us know how you get on...... :shades:
-
I've just had a delivery from the butchers, i have, chicken wings, turkey necks, kidneys, scraps of fat and bones and marrow bones, along with some chicken mince, pork/beef mince, and tripe that i'd bought elsewhere. Is that all i need? I know they need veggies too, but i haven't got a blender yet, so i'm just giving them grated for the moment.
Also does £27 for a small chest freezer full sound like a fair price? Being veggie i have no idea.
-
Brilliant!
You won't need much of the fat though, so if it is in blocks of just fat you might as well get rid of it or make bird treats out of it!
So.....just how did you manage to sweet talk your butcher and where is he?
I may get you to phone my local butcher for me and try the same trick because I am having no joy whatsoever with any around here!
-
The fat is just the cut off bits from what they sell, so is basically a bin bag full of bones with meaty/fatty scraps still on them.
Really stupid question i'm sure, but are turkey necks quite dark? i have two loys of dark looking things, i'm guessing one lot is kidney and t'other lot is necks but i expected them to look more chickeny! :005:
 He's the only butcher locally, and my only sweet talking was by mentioning the fact that i would be a regular customer. ;) He even bagged it up into 1lb bags and delivered it. :D

Fantastic! :D
..I would haggle on the price though, on principle! Even if you only get a couple of quid off!
