Can you phone the vet and see what they say?  They are usually pretty good about what needs to be got rid of and what doesn't!

I would phone the vet and ask. How much chocolate did he eat?

I wouldn't worry. Milk choc's are less dangerous than plain choc. Keep an eye on him. If he shows signs of being unwell then contact your vet - but if you are worried then by all means give them a call.

Jasper and Buddy stole and ate a whole Chocolate Orange coupled with a load of big German Marshmallow bombs on Christmas Day while we were out!! No ill effects luckily.

There you go then.  If they were really worried they would have had you drag Sam in right away.  They maybe think it is enough to make him feel off but not enough to be dangerous.  Here is hoping that he is none the worse for his ordeal

At least he likes chocolate and not Anadin Extra like Kali :embarassed: :embarassed:

I hope everything goes well, crossing fingers and paws here. I read in an article that an average size spaniel would need to eat about 200g for it to be seriously dangerous. So hopefully it wil not be a problem for you as he probably ate a lot less.

:o Yes something I know only too well  >:D Keep an eye on him as you will soon know if he is not right, milk chocolate is however not as bad as the dark terries all gold daisy ate, when the chocolate took effect, she was behaving like an addict going cold turkey, it was awful to watch, she did however end up in the vets, they didnt make her sick as it had been in her system too long, she did recover and was passing little chocolate bars for days  :005: It was a VERY expensive box of chocolates, but worth every penny to get her back to health  :D

Hope all goes well - Saffy ate 18 belgian chocolates last Christmas with absolutely no ill effects whatsoever - I phoned the vet, told him what had happened and he did not seem too concerned other than to say she may have an upset tummy for a day or so........ ph34r  Saffy was fine as I said, me and OH were complete wrecks having convinced ourselves we had probably poisoned her..... ::)  the vet did say we could make her vomit with salt water if we wanted to, but made it sound like we didn't need to, so we didn't......................hope she is ok

I'm sure he will be okay. My Guinness ate a chocolate santa at christmas and gave us a bit of a worry but he's fine. Trust your vet and trust yourself- your dog will tell you if something's wrong. Anyway, at least he's not practically climbing your bookcase to get at the tropical fish food like my Golden Retriever...

Both of these monsters ate chocolates this year. We has nipped out for half an hour and when we got back, brammie was getting stuck in to a box of Roses. When I was clearing up, I noticed a hazelnut in amongst the wrappers. She had clearly licked all the chocolate off and spat out the nut  :005:

While Brammie was chomping on the roses, Poppy had managed to drag a box of Twilight into her bed.

Both were neither up nor down with them - thank god.

Hope Sam's OK.

On the humorous side, you have to imagine these little rascals, especially where there is more than one, saying "Right, that's them out of the way, let's go hunting!"

i read that  its the coco in chocolate whats bad for dogs , but not all dogs are affected by it ,its a bit like a nut or sea food allergy with humans, and can be deadly.but the risk is still there so i would not give mine chocolate but cockers are little buggers . before we knew that chocolate was bad for dogs ,many years ago i had a dog that ate kit kats daily with no affect at all. so if he is well in him self dont worry.

i bet sam thought he was in heaven. as he's not allowed into the living room at all now, but he also go to go upstairs but my bed is too high for him to get onto so i don't have to change the sheets-thank god.

I'm glad Sam's ok; when Alfie was about 5 months old we had friends staying for a weekend and I came out of the shower one day to find him chomping his way through a large bar of Green and Black's dark chocolate out of their bag, he'd eaten about 2/3 of it. I put a toothbrush handle down his throat to make him sick and then took him to the vet as it was quite a lot of pure dark chocolate he'd eaten and he wasn't very big at the time either. They made him sick again but there were no lasting effects other than one very narked looking puppy  :005:

Let's be honest: we'd all be really disappointed if they weren't a little naughty some of the time....

Brightsparkler, you are correct it is the cocoa that can be dangerous, so dark chocolate is worse than light chocolate. But I think all dogs react, it is just very different how sensitive thay are to chocolate. Theobromine (a substance in coco) affects the dogs nervous system and circulatory system. The dog may feel nausea, restessness, raised heartrate and other weak symptoms at small amounts of chocolate. More serious signs with higher amount of theobromine.

Post by: Maggies Muggles on January 07, 2008, 04:40:29 PM
Over the festive period, Maggie has eaten (at least) 2 Charbonnel & Walker chocolate pieces, 3 scones (complete with cream and strawberry jam), several vegetables from a plate, a brie and cranberry wrapped filo parcel, 2 mini pizzas and half of a packet of doggie peanut butter treats that a relative brought for her from California (funnily enough, it was only the last one - specifically designed for dogs - that gave her an upset stomach).

We need eyes everywhere to keep that dog away from anything edible - generally if it's quiet in the house, Maggie is probably eating something she shouldn't!!

Seriously though, it's something we're concerned about and are getting a trainer back in to help us with this (and a few other little issues...)

Our dog sneaked upstairs and ate all my daughters easters eggs last year, six of them, mostly large ones!  I was outside gardening. He must have gulped them down at high speed as he had been outside with me not long before. He was taken in for monitoring to begin with and then had his stomach 'pumped' well made to eat nasty things and kept in. I was told that all dogs are allegic to chocolate as there is an enzyme in it which, dogs cannot digest.  So I don't think it is an allergy thing.  We laughed about it afterwards, when he was ok. But needless to say, we are more careful with our chocolate now. Mind you, my husband looked up on the internet all the things dogs are allergic too, and you'd never leave the house!!  Our old dog, bless him was allergic to grass, and once had a fit at Badminton Horse Trials in the long grass (before we had allergy tests). He ended up on steriods, bless him.  You can't plan for that allergy.  Glad your dog's ok.  Tou'd think they'd have dog sense wouldn't you.
