Title: Advice for dry cracked paws
Post by: Matthelen on January 05, 2008, 05:37:39 PM
Wilbur has some dry slightly cracked skin on his paws.  He doesn't seem to suffer any discomfort with it however.  I was just wondering is this normal?  If not do any of you have any solutions?

Thanks  ;)

Mine get this too sometimes, it's not really anything to worry about unless it cracks so badly it bleeds or is causing him discomfort or irritation. You can rub olive oil or vaseline on there to keep in moisture and I think you can also get stuff called paw wax which protects their feet although I've never used it. If you're doing a lot of road walking in the winter months it could be worth rinsing his feet in clean warm water after walks to remove road grit/salt etc. which can irritate their feet, as can run off in puddles from chemicals like de-icers which are used a lot at this time of year.

Yeah, I agree with Nicola. Vaseline's a good one. If you're really worried you could always get booties  :005:

I use paw wax as jarv is sensitive to nettles (and it does help, if i remember to put it on  ::) ) and i would recommend it for moisturising rough paws  ;)

Vaseline is fine as well.

Gari is constantly licking at his dry pads, I didn't think of using vaseline, I'll try that now.  :D

I tried it today and Gari went into a bit of a panic, doing everything he could to stop me, then he licked it off!  ph34r

We have had a lot of dogs with this problem at work(vets). They seem to be using more salt on the roads, which helpd dry pads, so a good rinse after a walk and then vaseline is what we have been advising.
