Title: Update: Roxy's eaten 2 Nurofen!!!
Post by: Claire83 on January 11, 2008, 08:51:39 AM
I'm so worried and angry. Came home from the gym last night and was chilling on the sofa 1/2 asleep whilst OH was ironing. About 5 to 11 i decided to go to bed so made my way upstsairs when i had noticed that Roxy was no-where to be seen!! that meant there was only one place she could be and that was our lodgers bedroom. ( i wouldn't be happy if she was!) I was right our lodger (who has a cat) had left her bedroom door open and there i found Little miss Roxy munching away on 2 Nurofen tablets!!!! I really panicked and made my way downstairs asking how many were in her room, was she sure e.t.c What annoyed me though was that she wasn't even in the slighest concerned. She talks to pup like a baby which i hate  >:D and she kept saying to her " when are you gonna learn you can't eat everythin puppy!" Uh HELLO!! in case you hadn't realised she doesn't speak Hooooman! GRRRRRR!!!

I was far too angry to say anything at the time i just wanted to cry (the fact she had been so careless, it's not the first time that Roxy has been an opportunist and been found munching on something in ehr room).......I went back upstairs and OH reassured me that she would be fine and that Pup could sleep in our room so we could monitor her overnight.......
I telephoned the vet first thing this morning and he has reassured me and asked me lots of questions all of which he is happy with. Saying the worst it can do is give her an upset tummy or the runs and just to monitor her throughout today and bring her in if there is any change.
She seemed fine this morning, My other half fed her and she was her usual playfull self, nice pink gums...no sign of a wotsit yet though.

My lodger knows that if she leaves the door open Roxy will go in there at every opportunity becasue there is a litter tray and her cats food in there. We keep most doors shut in our house and pretty much keep an eye on her wherever she is....It's part of being a responsible owner after all. But after all this she still continues to leave the door open unattended.

Anyway have any of you out there experianced a similar thing?........I've had to come in to work, OH is home this morning. I just can't stop thinking about it, i hardly slept at all last night through watching her and thinking about it.

Thanks for listening to me vent......i'm really stewing over this!

I have, but I got a different story from my vet  :-\

My last cocker got hold of and ate a whole packet of Nurofen the vet told me that one nurofen tablet was enough to do a lot of damage and possibly worse  :-\ I really don't want to be a scare monger here but that was the info I was given. My dog was taken into the surgery straight away and made sick (although fortunately he'd already been sick when I found him) and put on a drip for the rest of the night. He was then on medication to support his internal organs for a few weeks afterwards.

Now, I don't think my vet was being over the top.. but I'm really surprised in the difference of feedback on this?

Is it worth your while calling another vet that you're not registered with for a second opinion on how this should have been dealt with?

Sorry for saying scary stuff but it's an incident that's always stuck in my mind and terrified me ever since  :-\  :-*

Hope Roxy is ok

Oh Claire, poor you.

I don't have any advice but just to let you know that I sympathise, it's not easy trying to juggle everyone living together and make allowances for stuff lying around plus dogs.

Glad little Roxy seems to be ok.  I will have to give her an extra cuddle when I see her  ;)

I've just googled it, Claire the results are pretty much as Hannah said. I'd either speak to your vet again or try another one.

Good luck - hope Roxy is ok. x

Hope all is well.

I'd be giving the lodger her marching orders if she can't adhere to the rules of the house. Alternatively why not fix a self closing spring onto her door?

Hi All,

Thank you so much for all of your advise and kindness. Wow what a day yesterday! Roxy is fine but i am still keeping a very close eye on her as i'm not going to tempt fate. I returned home from work last night and she was again her "noraml" playful, happy self, (she must have a steel tummy) and i am so thankfull for that. I had no adea as to the damage what a drug like that can do!!!

I spoke to another vet yesterday afternoon who gave me more in depth advise. He said i could bring her in to the surgery for a once over at anytime but by the sounds of things she was fine if she had gone through the night without any problems and the day too. He ended up phoning me yesterday eveing to check on her progress which i was really gratefull for him to go out of his way even though we aren't registered customers of his. When i initially spoke to him he told me what sorts of dosage could have casued long term or even fatal damage and that i was very lucky that i knew the dosage of what she had taken and he could work out her body mass to dosage ratio and tell me that it would probably give her an upset tummy if anything. SHe had eaten x2 200mg doses of Nurofen Meltlets (the ones that dissolve on your tongue) if she had had double that then i could have had a seriously sick puppy. We popped in to see him last night and i also took her in this morning and he is happy that there are no signs to cause concern but to watch her closely for another couple of days. He said she was very, very lucky!
Anyway i've popped her in to see our groomer this afternoon for a trim so she'll look like a new puppy when i pick her up.... And she'll have a nice surprise when she gets home as i've just baked a new batch of liverbread......

As for my lodger......I haven't seen her since the incident but i'm still not happy. I am alot calmer though and so probably won't bite her head off but i will be telling her what's what! I'm just so annoyed that it was a potentially life or death situation and she didn't seem concerned.

All that matters though is that my baby is ok. xxx

Thank you so much again everyone. Love Roxy and Claire. xxx

I'm so glad Claire, fingers crossed she stays as she is and tell that blurry lodger to put up with headaches from now as drugs are banned from the house if she can't be responsible with them!!!!!!

Lots of cocker kisses to Roxy  :luv:

I'm glad she is ok.

Are you going to stay with your vet after the crook advice?

Just a thought; could you live with a stair gate to stop her getting anywhere near your lodger's bedroom door? Or consider a self-closer on her door as suggested by Pammy.

Really glad the gorgeous little girlie is ok  :luv:

Pammy's advice of a self-closing hinge on the lodger's room door is a good one.

I know that one of OH's parents JR's ate a whole pack of nurofean once ( when she was about 3)............advice from vet to vet obviously differs............they were advised to keep her awake all day, keep her walking about and drinking water and what not, she was given the all clear the next day and she is now 15 and still going strong.  Obviously every dog is individual and things affect them in different ways, but thought that was worth sharing....

I think a baby gate on the door is a good idea, though I guess your lodger could forget to close that as well ::)

Glad Roxy is ok :luv:

Thanks again everyone, Yes indeed about the baby gate. I've got my OH on the case as I type! I'm not taking any risks...... As for my lodger still no apology or even asked how she is or if she suffered any ill affects.....Just continues to talk to her like a flamin baby!!!!  >:D She's off travelling for 5-6 weeks the day after tomorrow and her cat is going to stay with a friend (don't get me started on the bloomin' cat, i have strong feelings about that issue too! a cat! YES! Travelling! YES!) Anyway it'll give me a chance to puppy proof the house again whilst she's away. Thank you for all of your suggestions by the way about the door will be looking in to that one too.
I really don't think she realises   how dangerous and life threatening it could have been!  >:D

As for today She's still her "normal", "nutty", Cocker lovin' self...we've just returned from a lovely afternoon on Wimbledon common with OH's parents and she had a great time. I'm also glad she's ok for Shoreham next week too as we can't wait to see all of you who are going!!!! PS. I've some special liverbread for you all that will be there. As for those of you that won't here's a HUGE Cocker KISS from ROXY. XXXXXXXXXX  :-*
