We intend having our 8 month old Cocker Robbie castrated as he has one undescended testicle. The vet thinks because it can be felt very close to the scrotum it can probably be removed through the same incision. However he has quoted me £220 for the procedure which will be carried out and Robbie returned to me the same day.I was expecting about half this cost ! Can anyone give me a feedback on the price they have paid and should I get a second opinion from another vet ?

My Vet castrates a Cocker for £118 (based on average weight of a Cocker) but we are lucky in my area as 1 Vet practice castrates any breed under 35kg for a very cheap £45 and spays bitches within that weight for £65.
Just checked their website and they have changed their price to:
Dog castration-£49.99 any weight
Bitch Spay-£69.99 any weight.

Awww Poor wee Bella - we had Poppy done just before Christmas (£120), she had one sleepy day and right as rain the day after. Hope Bella recovers like Poppy it was all very easy in the end (all that worry for nothing :luv:)

If he has an undescended testicle, then the procedure is different and so cannot be compared to the price of a routine castration, iyswim ;)

Our vet has just quoted us for a dog with an undescended testicle for £110 incl post-op check ups for a dog that weighs up to 10kg.

If you do get a second opinion, then make sure you are comparing like for like - my vets charge more for surgery, but all the follow-up examinations etc are included. Another local vet charges less for the operation, but routine post-op checks are subject to a further consultation fee, so the overall cost difference is not as much ;)

Mine will say a minimum (approx. 110-120) as it can depend on how much surgery is needed especially if its quite high up

My vet quoted me £98 for surgery, drugs and check ups, but both Alfies bits are now descended, but this happened only recently he is just coming up to 8months :blink:

Its a shame that theses procedures are quite pricey in some places? as maybe a lower price would encourage people who are not so able financially to do it, and there fore not have so many unwanted litters which end up homeless. I am yet to have Quincy done so it interesting to know how much it will cost, although im pretty sure i see both his ball balls in the right place so thats a bonus.

My son had his little girl spayed in December it was £182 including follow up appointment. :blink: (she weighs about 9kg) Jo x

if you have a "your vets" near you concider giving them a call they charge £50 at my local one

I had Alfie done in December, it was a straightforward op and it cost £101.51 including a bottle of Metacam and a follow up appointment 10 days later. I have the invoice here and the actual castration was £80.28, the Metacam was £6.11 and VAT was £15.12, the follow up appt was included in the castration cost.

Goose's castration cost me (Bearing in mind he was 25kilos) and larger than a cocker £79.95 plus £13.99 vat totalling £93.94. He was castrated in a brand new vets in Blairgowrie, with all new modern equipment, heated operating table and state of the art recovery room. :shades: Otter is going there to be done as my vets in Perth want £140 to do him. :o Oh I forgot the Metacam injection was 25pence :o :005: But they didnt charge me :-\ :005:

Cazza, I get Jennifer in Blairgowrie to do all my operations as she is a perfectionist and its worth the travelling as I know the care they get afterwards :luv:

I've booked Charlie in on the 12th Feb to be castrated he's only 12kg, they said it's going to cost me £53.25.

Yeah no probs, I have tons of it here as he got more after his op last week but doesn't need it any more.

Ooohhh if he don't want it :shades: spend a fortune on metacam for Jock as he needs it for his leg :shades:

When I had Storm (Weimaraner) done it was £65 including follow ups etc, they said a cocker boy would be less. Gotta go through getting Dottie done soon as Ernie is bigger :'(

Our vets charge 49.99 regardless of size. My bil dog scooby also only had one testicle in the right place, so he went to be castrated and they had a look for the other one, cutting him open quite a lot.They decided that it was safer to close him up rather than keep looking as they had no idea where it was and had already cut him about 8 inches looking! When he had recovered from that he had to go up country somewhere and have a scan to pinpoint the missing testicle! When he had his second operation they knew where to look but he still had to have a really big cut.The ops and the scan total came to over two thousand pounds!!!! thankgoodness they were covered with pet insurance.
Good job your boys is just inside ,but it still probably makes the op a little bit more difficult which all adds to the cost.

Thanks for all your comments and advice about Robbie's castration costs. As a result I checked around and found a local practice that specialises in castration and neutering and would do it for free if I lived in a council house!! However its not worth moving !!! the good news is they charge £60 for a straightforward castration and £91 for a neutering or an undescended case. Robbie is booked in for the 18th March poor thing !!

i've just booked sam in and i was quoted £154.00, for the operation it's self, plus painkillers and follow up appointment :-\ i thought it sounded ok until i've read this post!! think i'll have a phone around!

I have just booked Harvey to be castrated as he has only 1 testicle, my vet has quoted me £170.00 plus consultation fee and tablets, so am in shock, he needs to have it done, so it will be worth it in the end, it's worth that just to see the vet ;).

Had my 10 month old castrated a couple of weeks ago and it was only £80 for 3 consultations and the operation itself. Seems as if your quote is a little high!

Had Robbie done yesterday at Easyvets total cost £91 (£60 if he did not have an undescended testicle ) FREE if I lived in a Council House !!
He is recovering well but having him running around with a protective cone collar on is a nightmare. He keeps crashing into things especially OHs legs which she doesn't find amusing not surprising really as it does hurt. Still only 8 more days to go until he gets his stitches out

If he has an undescended testicle, then the procedure is different and so cannot be compared to the price of a routine castration, iyswim ;)
It isn't the same procedure if the testicle is far away for the scrotum. As I castrated myself dogs who had an undescended testicle near the scrotum, I can tell you it is the same procedure. And I find £220 very very expensive for this kind of surgery which is a very easy and quick one.
