Thought I'd re-post this here as initially I wrote it on the end of the puppy party thread. Would be interested to hear your experiences/advice!
The nurse suggested that one of the reasons he goes to the loo so much (and without meaning to be gross - it's always fairly 'loose') is because the food we give him is too rich? Could this be true?
I have to admit I'm a bit cynical as the food she suggested instead is one you buy at the vets and more expensive. We give him the biscuits (Pedigree complete for puppies). Has anyone else found this food to be a problem?

I'm sure there'll be plenty of other replies here, but from what I can gather Pedigree does have a lot of additives and can cause runnier poos... I don't really know the ins and outs of it, but it may be worth looking at one of the foods that hae only natural ingrediants.
There's been lots of discussion on here about what food is best.... Honey has James Wellbeloved, and seems to do well on it - she doesn't always eat it all, but she isn't highly food focussed...
A lot of people like Burns for their dogs, and there are many people here that feed their dogs a BARF diet (which I would love to do if we only had the freezer space).

I am of the opinion you are what you eat, and this applys to Zaras diet also. I feed her James Wellbeloved although more expensive its all natural. A food with aditives ect cant be good ( I must remember this next time I eat a microwave curry ) :o
Zara has never had issues with being runny and is happy and looks good on it.

Skye (now 10months) is on James Wellbeloved and enjoys it. She also gets the odd wet meal of Nature Diet, which you can buy in pouches from Pets at Home. It's totally natural and holistic with no wee hidden nasties in it. She loves it and has never had a problem with her Number 2's.

If you don't feed a high quality feed you will find you will get a lot of wastage and often regular wastage!. Most vets try and plug the food they sell as they often get commission for selling it - why not try Nature Diet or Arden Grange if you prefer a dry food see if you notice any difference...

As for the poop, well he is still a baby but my trainer always maintains that the more rubbish you put in the mouth, the more comes out the other end. The more additives, cereal, preservatives and other unsavoury ingredients, the more the poop. I was told to be aiming for 2/3 poops a day and that those poops should be able to be picked up easily, leaving little or nothing behind. He is young though to worry about how many times he goes so maybe just aiming to give him a good quality food is a start.
