I'm sitting her at work and can't concentrate because my special boy is poorly. OH is taking him to the vets to find out what's wrong at 10.50.
He's peeing blood :'( I know a little blood looks like a lot when mixed with liquid and I keep telling myself that it's probably only an infection but I still feel terrible.
He is absolutely fine in himself, not pale, eating ok and playing with Lenny as usual. He is drinking a little more, going to the toilet more and he even had 2 accidents during training last night which is something he never does.
The vet even told us not to panic and just bring him along in the morning. It's a good job I'm not busy today I'd make loads of mistakes.
-
Always a worry, especially when you can't be with them yourselves, sounds like it might be a urinary infection. I'm sure he'll be fine. Hope you're better soon Jakey. :-*
-
Ahhhhh Louise, hope he gets better soon. Poor you, try not to worry too much Dave and Norms send lots of get better soon licks :-* :-*
Hannah xxxxx
-
Poor Jakey :-\ Hope it is nothing serious Louise and the vet can sort him out fast ;)
Try not to worry, if it is an infection some Antibiotics will fix him in no time :D
-
I know what you are going through. I am waiting to bring home a little rescue cocker and she is poorly at the moment. Can't concentrate on anything at the moment, just come home from holiday, washing and ironing piling up, housework needs doing and all I can think about is this little lady. Think positive thoughts, he will be fine.

Oh, poor little girl. Hope she's ok.
Thanks everyone, I'm trying not to worry and am hoping that it is just a little infection.
-
Jakey will be fine, sounds like a urine infection tbh (but I would be fretting as well ;) :-* )
-
Oh Louise, fingers crossed it's only something minor and that it can be treated quickly.
Roxy, Vincent and I send him a HUUUGE ((HUG)) xxxx
-
my lab was the same recently and it turned out to be bladder stones, she had them removed and is right as rain now. Good luck :D
-
Sav has just called me.
They think it's cystitus so have given him antibiotics and an injection. We've got to get a sample to them asap (gonna be fun getting that) and keep a close eye on him. They want to see him again Monday or sooner if he deteriorates.
Not sure if I feel better or worse now
-
My cat was doing this all day Friday all over the house (at first I thought it was Ruby as I 1st noticed it in the crate, then when Ollie peed in the washing machine I realised who it was ::)). Sample I got from him was full of blood
Samples from males dogs can be quite easy to get if they have a routine (ie, generally go for a pee at at certain point) --- I got one from Wilf quite easily once as I remembered he always had a pee straight after going on the park and I just took a plastic cup with me and a jar and managed one straight away. Or syringe it off a hard dry surface into a container.
Hope all is better soon
-
Hi Louise,
I am sorry to hear about Jakey, hopefully the antibiotics and the injection will kick in quickly, sending healing hugs to Jakey from all of us :-* :-* try not to worry too much :luv: :luv:

Hoping he's feeling better real soon x
We can usually get a wee sample from Lenny's head as he has a knack of poking his nose where it's not wanted! :005:
I've just got back from having a wisdom tooth out, so at least Jakey's probably feeling better than me! Sav
-
Hi Louise, I am glad that Jakey is feeling all right! I hope the antibiotics sort the problem out.
And ouch re the wisdom tooth... luckily I haven't got any, so will never have to worry about them myself... ph34r

Poor Jakey - hopefully he'll be better soon.
Harry is also sending healing thoughts - and says maybe Jakey would like chicken and rice too when he's up to it.

-
sending healing thoughts to both Louise & Jakey - hope you're both feeling better very very quickly :luv: :luv:
-
I hope you and jakey are feeling better soon Louise.
I prescribe lots of cocker cuddles on the sofa with a duvet (and a glass of wine) until you are both feeling better.
-
Poor both of you :-* hope you are both better soon.
Cystitus ouch ph34r the thought of it is making me wince.
Wisdom teeth :embarassed: :embarassed:
-
It isn't me with the wisdom tooth it's my OH Sav. He hijacks my ID every now and again ::)
But thanks he'll read this later and I'm sure it will cheer him up.
-
Awww poor Jakey, I hope his infection clears up soon :luv: I had to get a sample from Alfie once and I used a baking tray, I followed him around and shoved it under him when he cocked his leg, it meant that I didn't end up with more pee over my hand than in the jar!
And also Louise's OH, I hope your tooth isn't too sore! :005:
-
Hi Louise, Hey Sav.......I thought you couldn't talk (wisdom tooth my left foot!)..... :005:
How's Jakey in himself this evening? Hope he's well. Hey Nicola, I like the baking tray idea, hope you didn't use it afterwards though? :005:
-
hope the anti biotics start to work quickly
-
Hey Nicola, I like the baking tray idea, hope you didn't use it afterwards though? :005:
Oh yeah, cooked up a storm with it :shades: :005: Noooo! I went and got a cheapie one from Asda specially, I think it was 89p or something!
-
:005: Great idea though!
-
I've got an old baking tray I can use. What a brilliant idea will give it a go.
He's ok in himself just a bit quieter than normal and a little short tempered with Lenny. We're cuddled up on the sofa ATM.
I just hope and pray that the sample doesn't shown anything nasty.
-
fingers and paws crossed here Louise, i'm sure the young fella will soon be right as rain
-
Poor boys!!
I hope they are both feeling much better soon.

My cat has had cystitis a few times - she is getting on a bit now and has always been an anxious cat. :-\ The vet said it can be aggravated by stress eg moving, new pets in the house etc etc - I had had both ;) If it turns out to be cystitis is may just be down to the changes at home ie Lenny arriving. Just a thought. Hopefully they can clear up the infection and he will be better in no time - cranberry juice is meant to be good for cystitis, perhaps you could put some in his food. Some of the cat food even has cranberry in it. ;) Might be worth a try too ;)
Hope Jakey is better soon.
Hope Sav is OK too - typical man trying to make out he is suffering more than your poor dog ::) :005: Arnica for him - I took it when I had mine out and I never needed any painkilllers - but then I am a woman! ph34r :005:

Aw por Jakey , hope he's better soon xxx :-*

I don't get man flu etc. :shades:
I've taken some strong Ibruprofens & I'm pretty much OK again & my mouth's stopped bleeding (unfortunately not before I had my dinner, yuck!).
Jakey's OK, he got very rough while play fighting with Lenny. Maybe he's a bit irritable, but little Lenny keeps coming back for more, he's a tough little boy! :D

Big healing cocker kisses to Jakey from Cocoa :luv:
Hope everything will be OK now with the antibiotics. Cranberry juice is a great idea, perhaps you could put a little in his drinking water.
Sav - hope you are feeling better now as well and don't keep putting your tongue in the tooth hole :005:

When we turned up at the vets yesterday, the receptionist said "Hello, please take a seat".
Jakey obviously assumed that she was talking to him because he immediately bagged himself a chair before I did! :005: :luv:

Thanks. He seemed ok this morning.
Our vet is so good with him is perfectly aware of his issues about strangers and being touched but is still fine about not muzzling him unless she has to even though he has gone for her before. He didn't need one at all yesterday.
Left OH in charge of getting the sample today.
-
Oh well done Jakey for letting the Vet examine you without a muzzle, its good to hear that vet knows and understands about Jakey's issues with strangers :D Good luck Sav getting a sample :005:

Be a good boy Jakey. :luv: :luv:

I was looking after next door's cocker whilst they went to Bulgaria and they had only just gone when I noticed she was weeing blood. I immediately took her to the vets and they thought she had cystitis and gave her a course of antibiotics.
I agonised over whether I should contact my neighbours to let them know about this in case it ruined their holiday and then decided to in case it turned out to be something worse. I don't know why I worried about whether to tell them or not. They were away for another 6 days after I spoke to them (3 people all with mobile phones) and not one of them even text me during that time to ask how their cocker was.
Hope Jakey is better soon.
-
Not had any luck with getting a sample. Jakey's too wary of what I'm up to, following him around the garden with a plastic bowl, so keeps running off to pee in peace! >:( Will give it another go tomorrow.
He's taking his antibiotics ok & there was no sign of blood in his wee today :D

:o :o Thats terrible. >:D I used to call my MIL every day when we went away without my old boy Louis, and that was when he was well.
Glad to hear Jakey's wee is clear. :D

Oh poor Jakey - hope he is better soon Louise, give him a hug from me :luv: :luv:
Love the pic of him on the chair :lol2: :luv:

Excellent that there was no sign of blood!
I have to get a wee sample from Dylan too... he is drinking too much for my liking, so am taking him to vet next Tuesday when I have to take Jesse in anway to get stitches out. I will try to get a wee sample from him to take with me then...
Vera

I successfully got a good sample today. Only Lenny thought the bowl was for his benefit & had a couple of slurps before I could whip it away! Eeurgh, dirty boy! >:D :005:
Still no sign of blood :D
I will take the sample down to the vets shortly & let you know the results.

Well done, hope you get the all clear, will be anxiously waiting for those results so fingers and paws are all crossed here. :D

That's not good, obviously just cocker owners & not cocker lovers. I dread the day I lose Jakey, he's my best friend.:luv: Still, he gave me a good few scars in our early, non-trusting days, to keep as rememberance souveniers! :005:

I'm glad Jakey's doing well. let's hope his results are good.
He is lovely, and like all well-loved Cockers, know that seats are for them and we can stand! :005:
I know what you mean about him being your best friend, Gari is mine too, and I couldn't have a better friend. :luv:
-
Finally set up my own COL account! :D
Got to ring the vets tomorrow & see if they've discovered anything with Jakey's urine test results. They couldn't do anything with his last sample as their fridge played up & froze it! >:( :005:
Things were looking very positive. Jakey had finished his antibiotics course & been fine for 2 weeks, until tonight at his dog training class. He had another accident & yes, there was more blood in it! :'(
Fingers crossed!
-
Woohoo, Well Done Sav! Now we won't have to keep guessing who's posting :005:
Aw poor Jakey, :luv: I hope you manage to get to the bottom of his little problem.....
Big ((Hug)) for him from Me, Roxy and Vini.
-
Thanks Claire.
Well I've just spoken to our vet and she's not happy about the blood re-appearing. In his last sample there was no traces of blood or crystals but she thinks now she needs to be more thorough.
He has to go in tomorrow to have a GA and be catheterised so she can empty his bladder for a better sample and then blow up his bladder with air to X-ray it. She's also going to send off his urine to be cultured.
Apparently because he's a boy he shouldn't get recurring cystitus due to his anatomy and she's really hoping that it's not something more serious.
We are lucky with our vet she's very good but it doesn't stop us worrying :'(
-
It sounds like you have a great vet, although like you say it doesnt stop you worrying. I hope he gets better soon.
-
I missed this, I hope the poor lad is going to be ok, positive thoughts for him from all of us.

Best of luck for tomorrow, I will be sending him positive thoughts :luv:

My best wishes too!
I don't know how comparable rabbits and dogs are... but one of my boy bunnies had recurring cystitis (though never saw any blood in his urine) and eventually neither antibiotics, nor homeopathic remedies (which worked to start off with) or anything else worked. My vet then suggested to give him a vitamin C supplement to acidify his urine (something which is apparently done with dogs and cats too) - and bingo, he never had cystitis again! So hopefully it's just something simple with Jakey.

I had the same thing happen with a male cocker I had years ago. You could see blood in his urine, but the urine tests didn't show any blood cells! ::) After a couple of rounds of antibiotics, the blood would just come back a few days after stopping; the Vet said to give him Vitamin C (500mg, per day) Cleared him right up and the blood would only come back if I didn't give him the Vit. C for a couple of days ph34r It certainly does no harm and won't interfere with any other meds they may be on
Best of luck tomorrow

Thinking of you today and hope you get good news (in that its all really simple)
-
Thanks everyone.
Jakey wasn't as happy to be left at the vets this morning, as last time. He likes the vet but as soon as he saw her he did an about turn & tried to make for the door!
I picked him up again, expecting him to be subdued & dopey, but as soon as we made eye contact he was jumping up at me, jumping on & off the chairs & dancing on his back legs, which even surprised the vet! ::)
Anyway, the results. They are fine apart from there were traces of some crystals. His urine sample is going to be sent to another lab for further tests to confirm which type they are, which the results should be back in a few days. He's been given a 10 day course of antibiotics & a pack of gentle recovery food. Will definately be trying him on the vitamin C treatment.
I can't get his pet insurance claim form done quick enough. £490 for today! :o
-
;) Well that's good news :luv: Hope you get the other results soon and can get treatment underway! Well done Jakey :luv:

Guys I'm sorry I've only just read this properly...I hope it gets sorted. I give Linus Vit C every day for same ;)
You're not the first person to have mentioned that Vit C does the trick, I think we shall give it a go.
The vet wants to wait until the results are back on the crystals before giving us any advice but he has antibiotics and some oral drops to take. She has given us a sample of some special urinary tract food but did say that once he goes onto that food he can't have anything else as it upsets the ph of his wee.
-
I'm glad he's not too bad, hoping he's fighting fit soon. :luv:

Thanks Jann, he's doing ok but we haven't had the test results back yet. Once we know which crystals they are we can start treating them properly.
He's taking all his medicines like a good boy though and doesn't seem sore at all.

I'm glad Jakey's not in pain, I've been following this thread and I hope you can get a diagnosis and a treatment soon :luv:

-
Hope they get to the bottom of it soon, Louise. Well done Jakey for taking his meds though... :luv: :luv:
-
Thanks everyone.
We have got the result back and the vet informs us that the crystals are not the nasty ones. She has suggested that we put him onto special prescription only food to manage his urine ph but I think we'll try giving him Vitamin C 500mg a day. A couple of people on here have tried on their rabbit and dog and it has worked.
It's certainly cheaper than the prescription only food.
-
Oh I am so pleased for you. Hope the vitamin C does the trick
