Title: Honey is getting spayed today
Post by: *Lucy* on March 14, 2008, 08:23:45 AM
Well I've got to take Honey to the vets for 9.30 and i'm not looking forward to it!!

She already knows something is wrong because she didnt get her breakfast this morning - she sat there and watched Molly eat and looked up at me as if to say 'what about me??'  :-\

I know everything will go ok its the time after the operation I'm worrying about,,,,,,,,,when Molly was spayed she was very quiet and kept herself to herself, no running or jumping, she just stayed in her bed - but Honey is going t be a different story, I know it!!

Honey is so active its unbelievable, she just has to run everywhere and jump on every piece of furniture until she finds the most comfiest piece then settles down, even in the garden she doesnt stop running about and jumping off the wall onto the grass etc - how the heck am I going to be able to stop her doing this??

Anyway, please can you all send healing thoughts and gentle cyber hugs for her today?!

Thanks

Wishing you and Honey all the best!!!

It has been pretty hard keeping our Honey calm since she was done on Monday, but she's doing ok.  Her on-lead walks have been a little longer than advised (but then she is used to a good 1/2 hr off lead twice a day).  We have put a cushion on the floor so she doesn't need to jump up to the sofa.

The main thing we have realised is that her jumper is the equivilent of doggie kryptonite!!!! We had to take it off briefly last night, as it was wet, and Honey raced around like a thing possessed.  The second it went back on, she curled up and went to sleep!!!
Don't ask me why!!

Aaaw good luck today.  ;)  Sure it will all go fine.    :D

I found the worst bit was keeping Coco still afterwards.  >:(  Even the evening of the op when she came home she was raring to go.  :o  In the end I had to put her lead on even to go into the garden for a wee to stop her doing the wall of death round the garden and off the steps!  ::) :005:  After about a week though, we pretty much went back to normal - it is amazing how fast they recover.

Good luck for today Honey.
Try to keep yourself busy Lucy. It's a lovely day around here isn't it! I think you should take Molly for a good run on the beach because she will be wondering what's going on too.
Sending you lots of love and hugs  :luv:

Good luck for today.

When Fern was spayed we took all the cushions off the sofa and put them on the floor, so at least if she did try to get on the sofa it was not such a jump.  As for the garden we were told she had to stay on the lead so that prevented her from dashing around.

The worse thing we found with Fern was that she was obviously uncomfortable and would do a strange spin and then lie on her tummy.  She got lots of cuddles though and me and OH slept downstairs with her for a week!

Good luck for today.

When Meg was spayed she cried all night the first night which was awful but then the following day seemed to pick up and she never looked back.  She had to have on lead exercise for 10 days afterwards.

They are amazing how quickly they recover.

Lots of love Honey.  She will be ok Mum.  I remember worrying about Kali when she was done but as others have said, the hardest part is trying to keep them still.  I gave up with Kali in the end.  Nothing I did would stop her jumping on the settee ph34r  Big hugs and good wishes coming your way :-*

Ellie was done a week ago today, and it hasn't been to bad. I have had to keep Monty away from her as he is very rough and wants to jump on her. I have two crates, and used the small one in the lounge with us for Ellie. What with the crates and a dog gate we have managed to keep her safe :lol2:If she went to jump on things I told her NO, and bless her she has been quite good. She did cry quite a bit the first night home, I think the anaesthetic causes this. I have been keeping her on short lead walks on her own. She is not happy when I take the other two out. I did read that they shouldn't run, chase balls etc [Ellie's favourite thing] for 4 weeks, to allow the internal side of things to heal. I will ask my vet about this when we go on Monday for her check up. I know it's difficult but I'm sure little honey will be OK.

Poor Honey  :'( :'(
I'm sure she will come out when she is feeling a little better. I would give her a blanket to snuggle up to in her chosen spot.
I'm glad the Molly is being gentle with her, it's as if they understand isn't it.
I hope Honey improves as the night goes on.

I'm sending her lots of healing thoughts and Eric has got lots of cocker Kisses for her  :-*

awww poor baby  :'( :'(  She just doesn't know whats happening/happened.

The anaesthetic can do funny things to them, probably hasn't completely worn off yet, and she's probably in pain too.

If you have it I would recommend Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence, just to try and calm her down a bit.

I'm sure she will be ok soon, but if she's not and this gets worse, call the vet  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

It is heartbreaking when they are crying isn't it?  Kali was the same, crying, shivering, going round and round in circles as if she couldn't get comfy.  I knew she would feel better real quickly but I am afraid I caved and phoned the vet insisting on Metacam for her ph34r  It will get better, don't worry too much :-*

Oh you poor thing I do feel for you.  Sounds like Sheryl had a similar experience that soon got better.  Hope she's ok - and as Helen says if you are worried called the vets

(((hugs)))  :-*

Thanks everyone  ;)

Had to leave her on her own for 10 mins while I took my eldest to rugby training - when I got home she had come from under the table and is now *trying* to get comfortable in her bed!

She'll be OK its just so horrible seeing her like this  :-\

Glad the op went well and I agree with Joules, she might be uncomfortable tonight but will be raring to go tomorrow.  :D

Don't forget the t-shirt instead of the buster collar to keep her off her stitches if you need it.

Glad to hear all went well - our Honey was the same when she first came home, very whiney and sleepy.  She was also very very hungry!!  When we let her out for a wee, she just sat in the middle of the lawn in the rain!

By the next morning she was pretty much back to normal, but still hungry!!!! Now (4 days later) she is just getting fed up of this on-lead exercise only rubbish!

She has certainly forgiven us, and no ill efects re: vet either - she was happy enough to go back for her check up yesterday!  :D

I was just sat on the floor next to Honey's bed stroking her and Molly walked up and licked Honey's back  :luv: but Honey went for her!! It was scary, Honey's never, ever done that before - just proves how messed up she must be feeling  :-\

I feel so guilty  :'(

Don't beat yourself up over it, she's just feeling uncomfortable and wants a bit of peace. She'll be back to her old self soon enough and will have forgotten this ever happened to her.  :luv:

Remember, she is still recovering from the anaesthetic. Don't let her drive, operate machinery or drink alcohol, but you can have some alcohol to help you relax! :lol2:

Aww, she'll be fine once the aneasthetic wears off. I gave ellie some chicken and rice, she was hungry but she picked the chicken out and left the rice. Ellie had been given a painkilling injection and hasn't shown any sign of discomfort. She was nearly her usual self the next morning.

milly was fine when she was spayed.  my only problem was keeping her from jumping on everything  :P

she was not too keen on the short lead walks either!  she is an off-lead girl - like most cockers i think!

all the best from us anyway   :shades:

Honey had a really good night - didnt hear a peep out of her!!

Although I did wake up at 4am to find her in our bed but I didnt have the heart to put her back in her own  :-\

Looks like she has perked up a bit as she tried to steal the little ones crumpet this morning!!!  >:D :005:

She has now eaten her breakfast and is asleep at my feet  :luv:

Hopefully she'll have a good day!!

Can I take her out for a walk today? Or should I wait a few days?

If you think she's up for it, I would def take her out for a short walk on the lead today. Probably better to have lots of short walks - 10 mins or so - for a couple of days though  ;)

Glad she is feeling better  :D

Glad Honey and you had a good night  :-*

If she is feeling up to going out take her for a very short on lead walk - let her stop and sniff and just be out side for a bit

I didn't take Fern out except into the garden for the first two days after her op and then just short on lead walks for a few days after that and gradually increased it  :D

I gave Honey a short on lead walk the following afternoon, as she was desperate to get out (sitting by the front door and whining!).  Since then she has had 2 gentle on lead walks a day - we've been out up to half an hour, but definately not walking all that time - we've been stop/starting to prevent pulling, stopping to talk to people and stopping to sniff.  It's been about enough to keep her sane, but she is starting to get very antsy now!

Haven't managed to stop her jumping onto the sofa - she even started jumping over the step I created out of a cushion!  ph34r

Her stitches looked a little red last night, but I think it was just where her tummy was full, as she had not long eaten when I checked.  They are fine this morning!

Lola was spayed about 5 weeks ago and I didn't walk her for about 5 days afterwards - I just took her out in the garden and played hunt the fircone!  By day 5 she had dug four massive holes in garden.

Give Honey arnica tablets (helps the healing process) def. worked for Lola, I also had arnica cream to rub in when the vet took the plaster off as it had got quite red and then of course with the licking, Lola became quite "hooked" on the taste  ::)

I thought when I was going thru the after-op care it would never end...but Lola is back to normal now apart from her hair which is taking forever to grow back.

Honey will soon be back to normal.
