My beautiful Toby is not at all well.
He was diagnosed with a heart mumur 18 months ago and is on meds for that. Overall doing OK and it certainly didn't slow him down.
In the past 5 weeks he has had 2 episodes of suddenly coming over to me (?for reassurance) and then just standing and shaking, looking bemused and staggering around if he moves. The Saturday before last, he had a major epileptic seizure. I work with people with epilepsy and knew straight away what it was. Lasted for about 5 minutes and then once he settled he slept for a couple of hours.
Next day, only outward sign was extremely droopy eyes but by Monday looked OK. Off to vets again (had spoken to them Saturday evening) and he is now on PHENIBARBITONE.
No more signs of seizures have been observed but since Wednesday he has been generally weaker in his back legs. On the flat he is fine but as soon as he has to push off from back legs he is scuppered.
Got him checked out on Saturday and vet thought it would settle. Really much the same.
He is nearly 12 but acts like a puppy but he suddenly seems very old.
It is so distressing to see my loved one changing before our eyes.
He is still happy, active and eating like a horse. Enjoying his walks and lots and lots of cuddles and kisses.
Sorry this is so long, but wanted to share it with people who understand and to see if anyone has any ideas for a better way forward.
Thanks for reading this far :D

Oh poor Toby, and poor you, it must be horrible to see him suddenly change like this :'( He sounds like he's still got his cocker character and spirit though :luv: I hope the medication helps him and he doesn't have any more seizures.

:'( Poor Toby, and how distressing for you :-\
I did have an epileptic dog once who was treated with the same medication. It is very frightening when you first witness it. I hope that the medication does help and either stops or reduces the number of attacks ;)
I think you will just have to see how things go in the next few weeks.
As you will already know if you work with people with epilepsy, if he has multiple fits without coming round, you must get medical help quickly to interrupt the cycle (status epilepticus )
Love to Toby I hope everything works out for you and him :luv:

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts. Unfortunately he had another partial seizure last night and was very quit overnight. This morning however he doesn't seem to bad.

I hope the vet manages to stabilise Tobys epilepsy. It may take a while for the medication to reach theraputic levels. Hope he is soon back to his usual self.
